Review: A brace of very serviceable edits make up Vol 15 in the 'Underdog' series, with each - somewhat unusually in re-edit circles - supplied with two mixes to choose from. Made In USA's 'Never Gonna Let You Go' from 1977, a track which Theo Parrish also did a now highly sought-after re-edit of a few years back, is supplied in all its brass-and-vocal-chorus glory on the Underdog Edit, while the more fast n' furious Underdog's Breakdown Edit is one for the dancers. Also getting the treatment is Dee Dee Bridgewater's strutty, attitude-laden 1976 funk-soul jam 'It Ain't Easy', whose dramatic drums then take centre-stage on the Bonus Beats Rub.

Review: After a hiatus to produce and write for the likes of Aquilo, Octavian and Rudimental, Derbyshire's super producer Sam Knowles returns with his first new music under the Karma Kid moniker in two years. He channels the glory days of late '90s funky house on the anthemic feel good vibe of "Freedom" (Never Let You Go) with its breathtaking brass section and roaring diva vocals that's sure to set the dancefloor on fire. This is followed by a killer remix by South Yorkshire's man of the moment Mella Dee (Warehouse Music) taking the track down a loved-up and energetic rave route, and another original track in the form of the sun kissed and dubbed-out deepness of "Can I Play".

Review: We can't predict the future here at Juno, but there's certainly a lot of deep past on this release, with the latest release from Irishman Brian Durkin (aka Deep Future) looking back to the '90s for inspiration. Thankfully he's applied enough contemporary techniques to keep things on the right side of retro with "Let Me Go" featuring skippy garage beats, female 'aww yeah!' vocals samples, a gospel wailer and warped organ stabs. "You Need It" is moodier take on garage, which remixed in a compressed house form by Detroit Swindle. However it's Dirty Channel's baddass and jackin' take on the title track that's the standout here.

Review: When it comes to re-editing, French crate digger Charles Maurice is something of a purist. His re-edits are little more than brilliantly judged re-arrangements, shorn of 21st century production trickery, but with the best bits of each original track pushed to the fore. This EP features a quartet of these pleasingly purist scalpel jobs. There's much to admire, from the humid hustle of tropical disco jam "Trini-Vibes", to the laidback disco-funk swing of "Sneaker 54" and low-slung post-disco sweetness of "Bio Rhythms". He also doffs a cap to Harvey and Theo Parrish by delivering his own punchy rework of Made In USA's "I'll Never Let You Go", a track that both have previously reworked with brilliant results.

Review: Belgium's Pelican Fly are back at it, and new Ukrainian wonderkid Inodi makes his return to the imprint with five new piece of digital fire. Remaining largely genreless, each tune on Digital Heart is simply a fascinating piece of studio work, starting with the sweet chimes of "Never Let Me Go" - watch for those video game sounds - and ending on the euphoric waves of "IWU", a tune that is actually representative of Inodi's sound throughout. That is, an incandescent blend of cascading synths and sparse IDM beats. Lovely.

Review: There's something brilliantly old-fashioned about this string-laden chunk of goodtime filter house. Its undulating disco grooves and feel-good vocals hark back to simpler times, when disco-house dominated dancefloors. Certainly, those who enjoy the work of Joey Negro should enjoy "Only You" - it has the same hands-in-the-air simplicity. Alongside the chunky original you'll find a string of similar, but slightly different, remixes. It's hard to pick out highlights as, to be honest, they all hit the spot, but the sax-powered disco-bumo of JR Disco's rework and the deep Banana Groovz 'Only Underground' mix are probably our picks.

Review: The Boogie Down Edits crew have been busy. It's not all that long since their last outing, yet this fifth instalment in the series boasts no less than seven tried-and-tested reworks. Naturally, the standard is high throughout. Throw in an admirable desire to mix up the genres - contrast, for example, the Bollywood-goes-New York stomp of "Disco", with the talkbox-heavy Roger Troutman rearrangement of "Come With Me", and the intergalactic down-low madness of "Let's Party" - and you've got a package that bristles with highly playable fodder. While there's a bit more contemporary heaviness to the bottom end, the crew's desire to treat the original material with due respect shines through.

Review: This release is dark, minimal and stripped back. It lands with a technoid energy that's robotic in its approach but gets to heart of the human experience, and it's courtesy of a slew of up and coming producers. It's a strong release from Sub:Edit, and the standout track is 'Hyperfuse' from Nuvaman, who has crafted a bouncing, infectious drum line that's paired with a soulful sample and juxtaposed with devilishly metallic synth nodes, a fearsome partnership that sees this track move with a particularly clear sense of purpose. Posk rolls things out on 'Money', Drytek blends furious drum work with a superb use of space and bubbling synth work. Sick EP.

Review: Emotional Rescue is delighted to debut a first. Rather than a straight reissue of an (obscure) classic or a collection of music by an artist or label, here is a compilation of various artists centered around a sound and movement - reggae-tinged music and how it influenced and spread from the Caribbean and diaspora. Drawn from the off kilter digging of archivist, DJ and collector Bruno (perfectliv.es), Nowhere Like Here is not a follow up, but a sideways accompaniment, to his recent and already cult like 'Perfect Motion' collection of left field pop and new wave, recently self-released with Flo Dill (NTS). This is a special release to celebrate the label's 10th year and beyond, offering a treasure trove of lo-fi and often pop inspired reggae cuts, mixing heartfelt Lovers Rock style paeans and quirky private press oddities, all guaranteed to 'make-a-move and tap', these are, in the main ridiculously rare or impossible to find alternative bombs, that are just as sound system rocking and massive bass line quaking showcases of the enduring legacy of this Jamaican music phenomenon. As with much of the early 80s period, the music community was in the throes of a do-it-yourself cultural renaissance as small labels, where crazy limited, one-off White Label Only's came and went. Songs like Avalanche's Your Love Is Such A Good Thing or Warp Speed's Take It To The Night were part of the claiming the means of production in to their own hands, pressing up the records and self-distributing. This raw, naive exuberance can be heard in the songs themselves. This is not reggae or Lovers as known, but something more expressive. Musical, simply produced, but with intelligible and uplifting optimism that is just superlatively catchy. While Paul Thompson's Can I Take You Home and Ras Ibuna's Black Beauty are more straight-ahead Lover's style cuts, there is the parallel dance pop private pressing vibrations of the two Keith Robinson songs and Majority's Caroline included - all part of a thread; a joining of the dots that Nowhere Like Here is at its most basic, a warmth the whole album exudes. This is not a Lovers Rock Hits of some, but a left-of-center versioning, fitting the ethos of Emotional Rescue by presenting something most will not have heard before and all the better for it.

Review: When Favorite Recordings decide to do a crate-digging compilation, they rarely get it wrong. Following recent Disco Boogie Sounds selections focusing on Brazilian and French fare, they've recruited dusty-fingered DJ Waxist to put together a Caribbean-themed edition. Predictably, he's picked some suitably obscure disco, boogie and disco-funk killers. Highlights come thick and fast, from the winding synthesizer lines, swinging disco-funk grooves and intergalactic sound effects of Musicism's "Bermuda Triangle", to the Clavinet-laden shuffle of Eddie & The Movement's "Macho Man", and the hard-wired reggae-boogie business of Barry Bryson's "Going To The Party".

Review: There aren't many labels in trance as pioneering and noteworthy as the legendary Black Hole Recordings, launched back in 1997 with the release of Tiesto's 'Magik' compilation and his home for many years to follow. This July collection in their Radio series is one of the finest to date. 10 full length tracks from the likes of Lange, Pulser, and Smart Apes. With highlights including 'Before You Go' from JES & Andy Duguid, and Super8 & Tabs 'All We Have Is Now'. Priced starting at a mere L5.99, its an essential wallet filler!

Review: The trouble with Tonbe is you've no sooner finished reviewing one long-player than the next one arrives! With such a prolific output, it's all the more wonder that the Serbian nu-disco stalwart manages to maintain the quality standard - but make no mistake, quality is what you get here. One or two tracks (eg opener 'Live My Life') veer a little too far down the pop route, but just check out the strutty 'This Is Party', euphoric Hammond workout 'Change The Mood' or the jazz-tastic closing triptych that begins with 'Keep On Moving, Keep On Grooving' and you'll surely agree that Tonbe is a rare talent indeed.

Review: Given the clear jazz, Latin and jazz-funk influences in his drum and bass productions, we probably shouldn't be all that surprised by the sound of Generation, Peshay's first album since 2004. That we are says more about our preconceptions than the album itself. You see, Generation is Peshay in live mode, utilizing organic drums, horns, guitars and vintage synths to create impeccable tracks that pay tribute to his myriad of influences, from jazz and Brazilian beats, to old skool electro (the freestyle-tinged "Dirty"), rubbery jazz-funk, sensual, clav-happy soul (the thrilling dreaminess of "Never Let You Go") and sun-drenched downtempo grooves. It's a brilliant set, all told, full of hazy warmth and luxurious musicality. It's easily his best album to date and a joy from start to finish. Seriously, don't sleep on this one.

Review: For the latest volume in Planet E's long-running Detroit Love compilation, label boss Carl Craig has handed over to DJ Holographic (real name Ariel Corley), a rising star of the Motor City scene. It's a hugely entertaining collection told, with Corley doing her best to showcase artists on the up - from both Detroit and elsewhere - as well as established stars of the underground. Musically, it's as diverse and mixed-up as you'd expect, kicking off with revivalist Afrobeat (Underground System), slick deep house (Pontchartrain with Javontte) and revivalist '80s soul (Shri Schwartz), before taking in everything from broken house and nu-disco, to sci-fi techno, sleazy warehouse jams, sleazy acid, percussion-rich Latin house and much more besides.

Review: It's not often an artist gets treated to being remixed 18 times on the one release, but here Morlack pulls it off. But before the remixing gets underway he raises the curtain with a Notorious B.I.G sampling gambit of slashing synths, tearing basslines and fluttering drums. Then there's the remixes. Funkanomics get all big band, Stevie Wonder and straight up hip hop on part two of a remix to "Take It To The Zulu", while BadBoE provides a killer remake of "Nice & Rough". James Brown is in the place during Trotter's remix of "Play Cards Right" while Morlack electrofunkifies himself in a 2014 remix of "Ghetto Vaccination". More breakbeats than you can poke a DJ at!

Review: Ah, this is what we like to see: an album dedicated to Kiefer Sutherland's nail-biting anti-terrorist series 24. Can't quite see how raw-assed party bombs, funk bullets and cheeky bootlegs relate to the ongoing mission of keeping the western world safe? It's simple. Take some time to study the dirrty south chants and upbeat Rhodes flavours of "Boogie On Tape", the razor-sharp riddim of the previously-released D&B-driven Tupac dedication "Snake Faces", or indeed the high-flying disco delight of Jenny Burton booty "Number One".... If these don't reflect the same killer instinct and ruthless efficiency as Jack Bauer, nothing will.

Review: How do Tramp do it? How do they continuously unearth all these unsung soul heroes? We may never know, but at least the artists featured are lovingly reintroduced to the record buying public, often after years of obscurity. Lonnie Lester is a singer from Indiana who began singing gospel, before moving on to doo-wop and eventually RnB. It's the raw rhythm and blues singles that he released during the 1960s that are collected here including "You Can't Go", "So This Is Love" and the Peter Gunn-esque "Meanest Man In Town".

Review: Experimental. It's a word used and used again when describing music that's a little off-the-wall but in the case of southern lad Toronto Is Broken, it's not a lazy adjective. There's a bit of an art to creating heavy, high energy D&B that's also deeply ridden with blockbuster theatrics and when it comes to pushing an atmosphere of widescreen tension and fast-paced action, he's got it down. Eerie samples pulled from places deep inside TIB's mind scatter the surface of each track, giving more texture to what could be lost as 'another' heavy drum & bass release. Don't be fooled - this one is different.

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his brilliant "Sunny Bigler" single, Leon Sweet has been installed as the man behind the decks for the second volume of Paper Disco's Trash The Wax series. Sweet's two-hour DJ mix is excellent, of course, but it's the unmixed tracks - a combination of unheard bits and recent Paper gems - that make this compilation essential. Expect a range of re-edits and original tracks that variously touch on nu-disco, Italo, boogie and, of course, house. Highlights are plentiful, and include a trippy slow acid version of The Balearic Beat Boy's "Waiting For Me", a typically rubbery mid-80s soul re-cit from 80s Child, and a killer, filter-heavy rework of Melba Moore by Neil Diablo.

Review: Bologna based legend Luca Trevisi aka LTJ Xperience has been spinning around Italy since the '80s so we were convinced he knew his stuff already, but this album is truly testament to his years and knowledge. He re-edits a bunch of classic soul jams spanning, funk soul, disco and rare groove on a collection which is pure fire and a worthy addition to any DJs arsenal. The smooth groove of "Slow Fire" is the kind of thing Psychemagik could have got to first, while "You Will Know" and "Black Machine" sample some of the very best in the form of Gypsy Kings and Prince, respectively. There's a lot to get through, but it's all killer, no filler!

Review: Dutch house hero Laidback Luke is all about the art of being focused, a theme that runs throughout the LPs 17 tracks. Despite his love of concentration, this is actually his first new album since 2002. He soon makes up for lost time though, with many standout tracks including the insanely euphoric EDM of lead single "Let It Go" (feat Trevor Guthrie), the electro-house/bassline hybrid "The Chase" (feat Aruna) and the sleek Jacksons-style jam "Never Forget" (feat More and Killa Karma).

Review: Mark Knight & Co.round out the year with 'Best Of Toolroom 2020', a 50 track compilation delivering a collection of the label's biggest releases from the year that was into one package. Boss man Knight teams up with Rene Amesz on the year's most massive funky house tune "All 4 Love" (feat. Tasty Lopez) with other highlights coming from: Carl Cox on his stomping heads-down rework of Kevin Knapp & Hannah Wants "Call Me", the anthemic and utterly uplifting soul of legends Gene Farris & ATFC's "Spirit of House" plus the return of the legendary American vocalist Ann Nesby - whose unmistakable voice dominates LEFTI's "Rejuvenate". There's also the worthy addition of two continuous mixes by Mr Knight himself. 'Best Of Toolroom 2020' delivers the perfect annual sign off, as the label prepares for yet another landmark year in 2021.

Review: Let There Be House & In It Together Records are proud to announce their huge label collaboration, in the form of this massive 60 track compilation containing 30 album only exclusives. 'The Anthology 2020' is a result of both labels having huge success over the past 12 months, with highlights coming from: Born2Groove with the low slung disco goodness of "Happiness", legend Sandy Rivera (with Aruhtra) on the bittersweet and soulful anthem "Love Somebody Else", the return of '90s funky house's glory days on "Piano Groove" by Makree (Sebb Junior Remix) and label chief In It Together's electrifying "Hey Mr DJ" (with Alimish). Review: Well, when we saw this title land in the store we were as surprised as anyone to see that Four40 Records, one of the most active and exciting UK bass labels across the full breadth of 2020 has just turned 10 years old. This is a pretty outstanding achievement, for a label that is still at the forefront of it's sound to this very day. The compilation of course features some of the biggest releases from across the breadth of Four40's incredible catalogue of content, from the likes of Hybrid Theory, I Killed Kenny, Pavv, Limita and more, condensing ten years of musical progression into one extended tape. We also get to hear a bag of exciting new exclusives from the newer breed of the Four40 roster, including music from The Phat Controlla, Blakk Habit, Lucas Maverick, Gemi, Badger, Patrick Kane, Yozhi, George IV and more. What an incredible way to round off the year!

Review: Next up from EQ Why, we see a full-length powerhouse of an album project landing on Equalized, delivering us no less than sixty original creations, showcasing the full spectrum of footwork and juke music in 2021. We get the immediate impression this project is designed to be taken in via long-play format, with each track lasting, on average, between forty-five and ninety seconds, keeping the tracklisting lively and unpredictable as we cycle through. From the groovy melodic switch-ups and high-intensity drum chops of 'Letting You Back' and 'No Good No Good', to the more jungle-inspired synth sweeps of 'On My Lap' and futuristic, blippy electronics of 'Reflux', we hear this album dive left, right and centre, giving us an extremely interesting musical journey from start to finish.

Review: Despite the setbacks brought forth by the pandemic, we're confident that Toolroom will still have a stellar year as always! With that in mind, the fifth edition in their 'House Party' series' looks to be the biggest yet, with a whopping 70 tracks to keep the party going for days on end. As a bonus, label signees such as Wankelmut, TCTS and Siege (who appear with contributions to the compilation personally) provide a continuous mix each - bringing the party to your house.
