Shir Khan Presents Black Jukebox 20
Bas Roos & Guy Steve - "Piece Of Soul" - (5:27) 118 BPM Hot
Freiboitar - "Lovely Situation" - (6:11) 122 BPM
Claus Casper & Jean Philips - "Sex Sells" - (6:08) 124 BPM
Review: Shir Khan unleashes another thrill-a-minute selection of disco-inspired workouts to get the dancefloor swinging. Bas Roos and Guy Steve kick things off with the good-time breeze of "Piece of Soul", where jazzy electric piano solos and ricocheting vocal samples ride a lolloping disco-house groove, before Freiboitar makes a stomping, French Touch style disco-house monster out of samples from one of the best-loved disco records of all time. Over on the flipside, Claus Caspar and Steve Philips whip their shirts off, reach for the poppers and lay down a stupendous slice of muscular late night disco-house. Featuring heavy, Moroder style arpeggio bass, razor-sharp disco strings and meaty house loops, "Sex Sells" is something of a sweaty party-starter.

Kerri Chandler - "Ain't That A Bitch" - (4:16) 110 BPM
Review: For the second salvo in the label's retrospective New York Chronicles series, Ibadan Records has decided to showcase some choice moments from the epic discography of legendary producer Kerri Chandler. First up you'll find a fresh Jerome Sydenham edit of Teule's Chandler-producer 1990 soulful deep house shuffler "Drink On Me", before we're treated to the dreamy, mid-tempo soulful house bliss of 1998's "While We're Young". There's another chance to savour the jaunty U.S garage organ riffs, tactile bass and rolling drums of the big man's brilliant Jazzy Mix of New Jersey duo Bas-Noir's 1992 classic "Shoe-B-Doo", before Chandler takes to the mic to muse on life on the streets in New York on the 110 BPM, hip-hop influenced goodness of the previously unheard "Ain't That A Bitch".

Dolls And Decadence EP
Dolls - (6:07) 128 BPM
Burn - (6:39) 128 BPM
Thood - (6:06) 127 BPM Hot
Dust - (6:46) 127 BPM
Review: The heavyweight Dutch producer delivers a suitably slamming release for Glenn Wilson's long-running imprint. "Dolls" is all dense drums and abrasive riffs unfolding over a grainy bass. "Burn" is less upfront, with a trance synth its central focus, but behind this musical element there lurks a jarring rhythm. "Thood" makes no such concessions to musicality; howling analogue riffs spit out fire and brimstone as banging, metallic drums pound away in the background. But Bas Mooy has a more considered approach, which he applies on "Dust"; its drums are heavy but less driving, and the sonic bleeps reminiscent of Sleeparchive or Sahko.

Stiches - (6:31) 128 BPM
Review: Rotterdam's Bas Mooy has fast made a name for himself with stellar releases on Mord and Mote Evolver with yet another belter on Glenn Wilson's Planet Rhythm. The pounding and relentless groove of "Mannik" just nails that Berghain vibe so well. As does the peak time stomper that is "Toorn" with its persisting synth stab and rolling bass. "Fields" is a full frontal attack of arpeggiated madness accompanied by a menacing mechanical throb and the metallic hiss of 909 hi hats, but wait for the breakdown! Finally "Stiches" provides more mechanical brutality with an evolving perc rhythm which builds in resonance to a furious climax.

Ann Meth - (6:01) 128 BPM
Rage - (6:07) 129 BPM Hot
Kaayman Regiment - (6:06) 129 BPM
Review: It's strange to hear a techno producer playing around with the title of the Pogues' best album, but Rage isn't a typical club release. Sure, Dutch producer Bas Mooy goes for the jugular on every occasion, but not in a predictable way. "Kaayman" is as grungy and acrid as Shane McGowan's dental hygiene, with buzz-saw riffs cutting through the dense rhythm. "Son of Sins" travels down a different path, with what could be a vocal sample amid its pummelling tribal rhythm, an element that gets deeper and more ponderous as the arrangement unfolds. That's not to suggest that Mooy has gone soft in his old age and "Rage" is a mean serving of tribal techno, replete with a deranged air raid siren.

Review: Rotterdam's Bas Mooy is no stranger to a bit of techno given his involvement in the European scene as a DJ since the late '90s and as a producer since the early noughties. He's appeared on countless labels including his own Audio Assault, the dread Mote-Evolver, Perc Trax, and even for the more recent Mord. The flying Dutchman returns to the latter with four guaranteed floor missiles, the first in the shape of grainy 4/4 beats and ringing melodies under the name "Men On Wire", a tune that's rapidly turned even darker and more pumping by the no nonsense AnD duo. Over on the flip, "A Feast For Crows" bangs its 909 away left, right and centre amid chilling walls of electrifying sonics, while "Nearby Silent Horses" channels that fury into a more compact techno bombshell for the peak time. Tough and driving.

Euphemism - (7:07) 127 BPM
Review: Luke Slater's label proves yet again that it's an indispensable filter for those seeking out hard-edged techno. "Howl" by Bas Mooy sets the pace, with a dense groove and pounding beats underpinned by a growling, predatory bass and rivulets of stainless steel percussion. Mooy's "Wesp" is derived from similar sources, but on this occasion the malevolent drums and shrieking riffs are paired up with a raw, growling bassline. Chris Finke's "Sleep When You're Dead" explores a new dimension, with a menacing bassline derived from the extreme end of ebm and industrial. But soon afterwards, Finke reverts to a purer sound and the clanking metallic rhythms of "Euphemism" complete the release.

Kneel - (5:58) 127 BPM Hot
Pose - (6:07) 126 BPM
Loaded - (7:05) 126 BPM
Review: It seems as though Dutch producer Bas Mooy is attracting a lot of attention from the UK of late, which may be due to a strand of British industrialism and EBM rearing it's head in a recent and brutal resurgence. This time Bas Mooy releases his The Room At The End ep for industrialist flag bearers Perc Trax. "Fasad" dispenses with broken beats, hollow synths and broken radio transmission vocals, while "Loaded" initially takes a similar shape to the sparked delays of Roman Lindau's "Borne", only to morph into a brooding dynamism similar in sound to early Stroboscopic Artefacts releases. "Pose" is a slab of functional club techno, teetering on the edge of dub techno with it's filtered saw wave gestures. The sinister alien synth line of "Kneel" is the perfect cue for a nightclub to dim it's lights to a dark shade of crimson - ideal Berghain fodder.

Review: Good on Shir Khan. The Berliner known to his mutter as Jan Simon Spielberger does a fine job, running deep house label Exploited as well as holding down a residency at local institution Watergate plus hosting a weekly radio show on Radio Fritz for over eight years. On his latest various artists' compilation, we have some straight up, feelgood house vibes courtesy of the man with one serious neck tattoo; Spaniard Iban Montoro who teams up with Jazzman on "I Believe" also Rotterdam's Bas Roos turns in the very early Motor City Drum Ensemble/Raw Cuts sounding "Midnight People". Worthy mention also to G Markus from the Cayman Islands (supposedly!) who serves up "The Man From Planet Jazz", a smooth and sexy lo-slung groove for the late night.

Review: Dutchman Bas Roos is the latest producer to contribute to Exploited's Shir Khan-curated Black Jukebox series. He kicks off a fine EP via "Downtown", a lumpy, bumpy chunk of dusty, piano-laden peak-time goodness driven forwards by bustling drums and a killer disco style bassline. You'll find more blissful piano solos on the similarly hustling, low-slung "One Way", which also makes great use of impassioned disco-soul vocal snippets and restless handclap samples. Elsewhere, "Take Life Easy" is an impeccable hybrid of jazzy disco samples and swinging deep house percussion, while "Ugly House" sounds like a long lost collaboration between Kevin Saunderson's Inner City Project, Chez Damier and Sheffield-based dusty house specialist Thatmanmonkz.

Recoil (Radial remix) - (6:53) 128 BPM
Review: Dutch producer Bas Mooy is one of the most talented hard techno producers, but for some reason, he doesn't get the acclaim that he deserves. Hopefully this release will help to address that situation. "Desolaat" is a killer track, its pumping groove underpinned by a dark acid line and dramatic filter sweeps. "Recoil" showcases Mooy's ability to work with seemingly disparate elements, as dreamy sound scapes unfold over a muddy bass and slamming, tribal beats. The remixers are also of a high standard. Xhin strips "Desolaat" back and turns it into leaner rhythmic workout, while the Radial take on "Recoil" is more slamming than the original, its heavy drums building to a bombastic climax.

Ekster - (5:03) 134 BPM
Review: Pleistocene Future has tapped Bas Mooy for its second release. True to form, the renowned producer delivers four expertly crafted techno tracks. "Saatana" has echoes of the Purposemaker project at its most loopy, as a one-note riff unfolds over a churning rhythm. "Lood" also favours repetition, albeit with a more house flavour, as a looped vocal sample is fused with dense kicks. "Bajesklant" is a real heads down club track, with Mooy deploying a screeching riff over a rolling groove. He then reverts to the approach on "Saatana" for his parting shot, "Ekster". Powered by a gritty bass and a stepping rhythm, it rounds off a fine second release from this promising label.

Review: Celebrating their tenth anniversaries, Mord and RYC deliver this superb compilation. Given the depth and breadth of their collective experience, this collection spans a range of sounds and styles. At the deeper end of the spectrum, there's the wonderful 90s melodies of Ritzi Lee's "Neutropia" and Amotik's "Laal", where hypnotic, Sleeparchive-esque tones bubble up over a stripped back groove. On a break beat tip, Uvb's "Mortifere" is a dense, mesmerising club track, while Brendon Moeller's "Hot Pursuit" resounds to a clanging, steely rhythm. The compilation has no shortage of club tracks either: there's the all-encompassing tonal builds of Bas Mooy's "Vedette", Kaiser's coruscating minimalism on "Disciplined Soldiers" and the gloomy industrial breaks of Orphx's "Slipping Through My Fingers".

Review: This is Mord's most ambitious venture to date, with a box set of seven records laying out the Dutch imprint's tough techno agenda. Regulars like UVB and Radial set the tone, with the former dropping brutish kicks and jarring riffs on "Someone Calling Cut" and Radial veering into a pumping direction on "Cru".Label owner Bas Mooy moves the compilation towards a more streamlined approach with the dense, linear Klockworks-like "Owl In Daylight", but Herdersmat also shows that the label has succeeded in attracting some heavyweight international talent; Eomac's "Phisk" is a disorienting rave-flecked stepper and Sleeparchive drops the bleep-heavy bomb that is "Evicted".

Review: Glenn Wilson's long-standing hard techno label casts its gaze back to assess some of last year's highlights. Labelling Planet Rhythm as merely an outlet for heads-down tracks is somewhat misleading, and as this compilation shows, some of its best material comes from left of centre. Robert S' "Matos" is a chord-heavy groove with enough attitude to ensure it doesn't sound bland, while Samuli Kemppi drops one of his trademark bleep techno bombs on "Ant On A Rubber Rope". For those who like it harder, there's Giorgio Gigli & Ness' tunnelling "Resin" and Yan Cook's resonating "Shift", but the highlight is Mr G's "Binky's Groove", a loopy house number with the kind of tough beats and insistent vocal sampling that makes Colin McBean unique.

Review: Amazingly, it's been eight long years since the release of Freerange's first Colour Series compilation ("Yellow"). A few things have changed in that time for Jimpster's label, but his commitment to musically rich deep house remains. That's much in evidence here, particularly on the contributions from Andre Lodemann, fast-rising starlet Mic Newman and Jimpster himself (whose woozy "Late Night Blues" is his best for some time). There's also a distinct old skool feel to some of the cuts, with Alexkid's percussive "Class of 95" and Milton Jackson's robust "DS1" offering plenty of vintage US house flavour. The real standout, though, is Arithmetic's' "Time", which sounds like a long lost deep house anthem.

Review: Man (or woman) of mystery Hyenah is the latest DJ to contribute to the digital only Focus on Freerange compilation series. Like previous volumes, this features a selection of unmixed personal favourites from the Freerange Records catalogue, plus a continuous DJ mix. While the mix is entertaining, it's the quality of the unmixed cuts that make this an essential purchase. There's a smattering of deliciously soulful, bleary-eyed deep house treats (Andreas Saag, Swell Session vs Mark De Clive-Lowe), a swathe of chugging, late night tech-house treats (Dixon remixing Jimpster, Manoo remixing compiler Hyenah), and one of the most overlooked reworks of recent times (Genius of Time's fantastic rub of Kyodai's "Mi Rumba").

Review: Greek disco producer Timewarp teams up with an anonymous pal from funk blog extraordinaire, The Zuzu Club, for this compilation that's exclusively about 'great and fresh' new music. Although there's no theme they do look across the water to the Caribbean for some inspiration on the likes of the laid back reggae lament of "Theory Of Revolution" and the smooth dancehall grooves of "Baby Got Me Good". Elsewhere we encounter vintage electro-swing on Pavlov's "Moving Next Door", retro lounge-rock on "Jesu" By Loopez and even some good old big beat on "Jungle Boogie" by Chinese Man.

Review: Drawing inspiration from "a remote location in the jungle" where Vincent Fenton aka FKJ aka French Kiwi Juice moved to during its creation, this Ylang Ylang EP provides the French artist with a first EP following his debut album on Roche Music in 2017. With a said six months spent in the jungle recording with no electricity other than what came from a generator turned on a night, the record takes in a moody and exotic approach to singer-songwriting, acoustic guitars and touches of contemporary classical soul. Ylang Ylang is the culmination of FKJ's feelings while creating this EP in the wild, and while shadowy in parts just like a jungle at night, it beams with warmth and finger clicking funk.

Review: This latest installment in this compilation series sees Gynoid cast its net far and wide to bring together some of the best new techno artists. At the deep, dubby end of the spectrum sits Mary Velo, whose "Wavelength" is based on a sub-aquatic bassline, fathomic chords and jagged, rasping percussive bursts cutting in and out, and Delko's "Shire" a clubbier take on the chord-heavy dub sound. Bas Mooy's "Desolaat" gets the remix treatment from Xhin, whose lithe rhythms and pitter-patter beats lend the Dutch producer's filters a lighter feeling, while Dax J, Lodbrok and Antonio de Angelis each deliver robotic, repetitive, stripped back techno workouts.

Review: Having invigorated the breakbeat scene in his native Spain, Seville's Digital Base now sees his first full-length album drop on iBreaks, ready to take on the whole world. Oldies like "Turn Me Out" and "Get On Dance" get included along with a whole range of new jams and some essential remixes too. After a long build-up, opener "Decibellum" immediately provides a storming start - a real masterclass in how to juggle a variety of beats and breaks into an energetic and dazzling mix. "Right There" follows up shortly after and sets the real vibe for the album - hard and dirty breakbeat but balanced with plenty of melody - in this case via a round-the-houses cover version of Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now". Included with the album are a set of remixes of DB tunes new and old, and some DB remixes of others (such as his truly standout treatment of DJ Mutiny's "Dreams Come True"). Names like Dekoy, Rex, 4Cuba and Break The Box all turn in blinders, but it shouldn't distract from giving Digital Base his props on dropping such a well-crafted and unrelentingly banging debut.

Review: Hamburg label Deja Tunes have a strong roster of soulful, futuristic nu-jazz artists on their books - so much so that they've dedicated two whole collections to the best beats so far. Part Two features all manner of jazz-sampling, broken beat brilliance, such as Michael Sauer's effortlessly sultry "Hey Woman", The Bas Lexter's Ensample's Herbie Hancock-esque "The Speech", or the Supreme Court Jesters and their Last Poets/Gil Scott-Heron-aping "Archaeology of The Soul". There's even a jazzy nod to dubstep on the highly original and beautiful "Jazzmove 2" by Channel Two.
