Review: Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint got off to a promising start last year with the Wrong Headspace 12" from Latvian artist N1L. Gamble's purview for the label is clearly international as this second UIQ release dips into the world of Zuli, aka Ahmed El Ghazoly, Egyptian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ based in Cairo. Limited to 400 copies. Jagged beat experiments merge with high definition sound design plus classic and exotic instrumentation on "Robotic Handshakes in 4D", it's an apt title, really. New frontiers in bass music are explored on "131001G", texturised minimal techno on "Ahmed?" and rather abrasive bass assisted noise experiments like on final track "Dr Beckett". What next for UIQ? Consider us intrigued.

Review: ChinChin Records have developed a real thing for electro-swing of late. Jazzy chanteuse ZouZouElectric is one of their key signings, and here they commission a string of mixes of her cult hit, "Round Round". The original's gentle acoustic riffs feature prominently in both Jojo Effect's catchy twang and Club Des Balugas' 'acoustic reggaeton' rework. Gardener Delight however, delivers a slick and super catchy piano house remix, the star of this particular show.

Review: Nelly Simon and ChinChin cofounder Juergen Kausemann's ZoulZoulectric let rip with their second long player and once again it's a vibrant, far reaching affair that digs deep into the timeless musical melting pot to create a powerful alluring fusion of funk, jazz, swing and all things in between. A party from start to finish, highlights include the smoky dulcets and late night upbeat momentum of "He Killed Capoty", the ballroom swoons and toe to toe duet of "Too Late To Tango", the delicate introspection and gentle jacks of "Bad Days", a brand new sleazy funk take on their awesome Nancy Sinatra cover "These Boots Were Made For Walking" and the loose limbed feels and woozy horns of "Black African Jack". Complete with a range of remixes, too, this is an exceptional sophomore that adds to their already strong funk cannon.

Review: Once again it appears that the Moonshine Recordings crew have outdone themselves, this time bringing together the official remix package for Zion Train's fabulous 'Illuminate' project. First up, Baodub steps up to give 'Poltricks' a colourful reboot, reworking those encapsulating vocal lines from Prince Jamo into a colourful dubwise march, before Bukkha gets busy on 'We Shall Rise' giving Cara's vocals a much more haunted feel throughout. Next, the legendary Radikal Guru returns to give 'No Peace' a slightly eerie overhaul, focussing on swampy synth lines and ear-pricking melodic twists. Finally, Dubbing Sun provide the pick of the bunch as they give 'Unity' a system-ready rework, giving Prince David's vocals a newly euphoric feel. Excellent stuff once again from the Moonshine team.

Review: Zetacode returns to Alien Technology with a release that focuses on the deeper end of techno. The title track sees the label regular use rasping percussion and solid drums as a backdrop for seductive, hazy hooks and sun-dappled keys. Despite being released in the depths of winter, it's hard not to be taken by its summery feeling. "To Be" revolves around a more upfront rhythm, with Zetacode deploying niggling hi hats and a powerful bass as the backdrop for swirling, spaced out synths. The label has commissioned ACTUM to remix the title track, which in keeping with the overall musical approach, is transformed into a woozy ambient piece.

Review: We are really struggling to keep pace with the absolutely storming run that the Four40 team continue upon here as they bring together a tasty new project from ZeroFG, pushing yet more incredible new school garage music. We kick off with the super smooth melodic dives and vocal skips of 'Never Think Of You', which also comes complete with a very vibrant steppers mix. Next up we swim blissfully into the well shape chord movements and colourful soundscaping of 'You Or Me', which descends into pool of super indulgent sub bass come the breakdown. On remix duty, we take it up a gear as Kayfabe brings forward a proper gnarly D&B rethink, bristling with well designed drums and pulsating bass waves.

Review: Zero T, LSB, FD and Tokyo Prose... Talk about soulful heavyweights! Each player representing with a sublime slice of rolling gold, this is - without question - one of the best "Fourfit" EPs we've seen to date (and, let's face it, they've all been amazing) Zero T brings the shimmering ivories, Tokyo Prose gets dreamy, FD unites the dusky vocals of Collette with the rusty dynamics of amens while LSB gets his timeless jazz on. When it comes to authentic deep, rolling, soulful D&B, this EP is a gnat's nads from perfection.

Review: Everybody needs good neighbours... And they don't come much better than Zero T and his pianist neighbour Onj. The pair had been living next door to each other for years without even knowing each other, now, thanks to a local situation, they're writing whole albums together. As always with Zero T, the vibes are set at the highest possible flavours and range from soulful to savage at the flick of a switch. Blind pianist Onj is new to D&B production but clearly knows the vibe and articulates his musicianship over the breaks tastefully, skilfully and perfectly. Featuring vocalists such as the legendary Ursula Rucker, Steo and T-Man (to name but a few), this is a class body of work delivered in that elegant way that only The North Quarter knows how.

Review: Following the release 'Kilburn' last summer, Zero T and his piano virtuoso neighbour Onj continue to soundtrack and document the vibes and history of their north west London cultural melting pot with 'Kilburn Park'. Album in size, and a feast in terms of scope and range, the flavours range from high grade neo soul and jazzy broken beat to the finale D&B slappers and smoulder sessions. With remixes from various Co-Op members such as newcomer James Rudie and bruk OG Mark Force (from Bugz In The Attic) this is an exciting development for Lenzman's label as he is now highlighting and nurturing the type of influences that The North Quarter has always been inspired by... Exceptional, organic and deeply soulful. Zero T and Onj have created something truly special here.

Review: Cor blimey governors! Zero T and Beta 2 don't muck around when they get together, do they? Last spotted on a collab flex on Dispatch last year, here the pair lay the foundation smack down on Headz with this massive six track EP. Tapping right back on the classic deep jazz sound the label has always celebrated and championed as the much as heavier stuff (think Hidden Agenda, Sci-Clone, J Majik) each of these cuts will whisk you away to places you didn't even know existed. The gilded Rhodes on "In My Head", the slinky, lithe bassline of "Misdemeanour", the star-gazing poignancy of "Stacks", the list goes on. Yet another exceptional EP from the mothership.

Review: Calling all DJs and getaway drivers alike! Prolific groove wizard Zero T continues his rich vein of form with 'Off Broadway' and there's a strong twang of 70s New York underworld to a few of the tracks. 'Drama' set the scene with little jazzy echoes and a groove grubbier than Giuliani. It's backed by plenty more dramatic moments; 'You're The One' is a sultry lesson in restraint, 'Something Got Me' tickles the 4 Hero spot with its slinky double bassline and dubby beat effects, 'She Moves' is pure summertime spring while 'This Condition' is a whirling cosmic dervish. And that's not even the whole EP. What happens 'Off Broadway' stays 'Off Broadway.'
