Review: The title here's misleading - as a digital-only label, And Friends releases don't really have B-sides - but we'll let them off because 'B-Side Tunes' is as fine a label 'best of so far' comp as yours truly has heard in a while, covering as it does a dazzling array of contemporary dancefloor styles. Rolling, summery nu-disco vibes dominate, but from the garage-y organ grooves of Cosmocomics' 'Make My Love Brighter' to the wigged-out jazz-funk/disco of Uptown Funk's 'Slidin'', and from the peaktime strut of Ezirk's fairly self-explanatory 'Saxophizzle' to Ferdinand Debeaufort's truly sublime, 70s-sounding 'Like The First Time' - which blends elements of disco, mellow Bill Withers/Labi Siffre-esque soul and west coast rock, then tops the lot with a proper earworm of a strings flourish - there's PLENTY to enjoy here. So dive on in!

Review: To date, French label Act Of Sedition have put out their music in the form of limited-edition seven-inch doublepacks. Now it's the turn of digital buyers to get in on the act, as they serve up all 20 tracks from their last five EPs in one bumper download package. Musically, 'Hang Ten' runs the gamut from straight-up soul, funk and disco - see, for instance, Jean Tyrol's 'How Can You Live Without Love?' or BJ Palmer's 'Lose Your Mind' - to more esoteric cuts like Shriek's 'My Spine' (a re-edit of Shriekback's 1981 punk-funk classic 'My Spine Is The Bassline'), Haules Baules' new wave-y 'TC Rhythm' or a W10-via-Bully Boy re-edit of The Clash's 'London Calling', with a respectully rendered dub of Jackie Moore's 'This Time Baby' leading the charge for yours truly.

Review: Over the past five years Mexico's Guillermo Gonzalez Santana, better known as Hotmood, had dropped a good 30 or so singles/EPs on a number of imprints including Tonbe's Disco Fruit, who now round up his previous output for the label in album form. Regular disco buyers may have most of what's here in their collections already, then, but if you've yet to get acquainted this is the perfect opportunity to do so, with standouts including the irresistible lil' jazzy, funky hip-wriggler that is 'Mr Funkyman', the laidback, handclap-tastic disco groove of 'My Disco Collection' and the looping cut-up soul of 'Clean Cuts'.

Review: Unlike many of its rivals, Fingerman's Hot Digits label doesn't fill its' obligatory annual compilation with back catalogue cuts. Instead, we're offered a vast number of previously unheard re-edits, remixes and original productions. It's a successful blueprint and one religiously adhered to on Hot Digits: Year Seven, the popular imprint's latest must-check collection. There's not enough room to single out every sonic highlight, but our current favourites include the breezy boogie squelch of Ross Fitz's 'I Miss Your Love ('85 Mix)', the driving deep house haziness of Fingerman and Henri Le Blanc's 'Leave Your Cares Tonight', the neo-trance cheeriness of Picklejam's 'Endorphin Situation' and the stab-happy, peak-time house retro-futurism of 'The Feeling' by Downunder Disco.

Review: Two very fine laidback summer grooves here from Mexican nu-disco producer Hotmood, both of which can be filed under funk or disco as you see fit. The all-instrumental 'Let's Ride' is a lolloping slo-mo chugger that packs some serious weight in the bottom end and sports a curiously squelchy aquatic-sounding bassline, the latter augmented by guitar chops, mournful horns and some sprightly piano sprinkles. The accompanying 'My Disco Collection' is a little more upbeat, and features a spoken vocal that sounds like it was recorded at a recent meeting of Cratediggers Anonymous! For maximum impact, just add sunshine.

Review: Those who buy physical releases may already have come across this debut missive from Russuan kabek Deeppa. The compilation style EP - the first of a series under the Perfect Duality title - dropped on wax back in November 2020 and here appears on digital download for the very first time. Scruscru delivers a superb EP opener in the shape of 'Mellow Yellow', a drowsy and gently breezy mid-tempo number rich in fluttering flutes and other organic instrumentation, before Jehan opts for mazy electric piano licks and chunky beats on 'Once Again'. Elsewhere, Hotmood's 'Reach Out & Touch' is a deep disco-house treat, SofaTalk's 'Love in Slo Mo' is a sparkling slab of horizontal jazz-funk and Replika's 'Rings of Saturn' is a spacey, warm and rolling deep house box jam.

Review: Here's one of those releases that really doesn't need a lot of explaining - anyone with even a passing interest in nu-disco should be more than familiar with all four artists involved, as well as the label! Hotmood brings the 70s vibes on the string-drenched, guitar-flecked 'You Are A Star', C Da Afro fast-forwards to the 80s boogie era with the shiny-suited 'So Good For Me', while Loshmi arguably gets the most inventive, mixing up Afro, Latin and spy movie soundtrack vibes on 'Regah'. It's the lazy, laidback funk/jazz-funk of Mitiko's 'Back To Dance', though, that takes the gold.

Review: Serbia's Disco Fruit bring us a digital collection of tracks that were (mostly) previously only available on wax. Label boss Tonbe supplies four of 'em, and with most of the rest coming from equally familiar names such as Dr Packer, Hotmood, Mitiko and Loshmi, you know the bar's set high! Stylistically, the album ranges from authentic-sounding low-slung funkers like Hotmood's 'Let's Ride' and Tonbe's 'Gem Picker' to the breezy uptempo soul of 84Bit's 'Mamma Jamm' and the boogie nouveau of Dr Packer & Loshmi's 'In Case Of Emergency', while special shout-outs go to Evil Smarty, who almost out-Fatbacks Fatback, and to Mitiko's excellent reworking of the mighty Janet.

Mexico's Hotmood is up first with the fairly self-explanatory 'I Love To Boogie', which is followed by 'The Groove To Make You Dance', a reworking of T-Connection's 1977 TK Disco classic 'Groove To Get Down' by Guildford's own re-edit don Evil Smarty. Montenegran producer Sasha Mitich, AKA Mitiko, then takes liberties with Janet Jackson (and gets away with it) on 'What Have You Done For Me', before label co-owner Loshmi plays us out with laidback, headnodding instrumental 'Soul Food'

Here the long-serving DJ presents an expansive collection of high-grade edits, revisions and remixes from the label's recent past, plus a couple of bonus all-action DJ mixes. Review: You're only five years old once, so why not celebrate in style? And here Warrington lad Danny Worrall's disco and re-edits label Masterworks Music do just that, with an anniversary collection packing a whopping 50 back catalogue nuggets. You'll excuse us the full track-by-track, then, but suffice to say that this is the label that helped launch the careers of Dr Packer and Natasha Kitty Katt, both of whom feature here, and with names like Ziggy Phunk, Rayko, Alkalino, Chuggin' Edits and Fabiolous Barker also on bill, you should already have a pretty good idea what to expect. Classy stuff all round, and a great VFM package - here's to five more years!

Review: Gather round: Editorial is revealing the contents of the mythical "Disco Scrolls", a sacred document for all those who kneel at the altar of the Church of Nu-Disco. It contains eight audio commandments, all of which should be listened to intently. Salvation comes first via the fluid nu-disco positivity of Bica's "Endless Rhodes" and the disco-house grooves of the soulful and musically expansive "Because I'm Black" by Old Chap. Elsewhere, you'll find righteous testimony from Hotmood (via the deep disco-funk of "Only Your Mom Calls Me Daddy"), The Owl (the boisterous horns and filter tricks of "Shake"), Frank Virgilio (the lolloping party disco-funk of "Out Here"), Labour Of Love (the bassline-driven percussion-fest that is "Good Feelin") and NFC and Key Sokur (the rubbery and down-low disco fun of "City Affair").

Review: An 11-track compilation of modern day funk and disco here from Norway's Walking Disco stable. While Rayko and C Da Afro are both represented, the emphasis generally is on lesser-known names, but there's still plenty of quality on offer. Fingerman conjures the classier, jazzier end of 80s boogie nicely on 'Mind Fonk', while equally convincing are the mid-70s velvet-suited disco vibes of Disco Funk Spinner's 'Fascinating Strike'. Funk Hunk apes classic Moroder on 'After Dark', while label owner Saskin S bookends the collection with two slow-moving funk jams, 'Yes, You Know I'm Right' and 'My Pnoop'. Classy stuff.

Review: Mexico's Deep Sense serve up a six-track EP that shows there's more than one way to go about repurposing a classic. Rather than simply looping up chunks of the original, the edits here get a little more creative - Sauco & Manuel Costela's 'Are We Ready?', for instance, takes the vocal from Fatback's 'Bus Stop' vocal and places it over a fresh (and utterly irresistible) funk backing, while on 'Last Nite' Tony Disco uses a similar trick to reinvent an InDeep classic in altogether sultrier, jazzier form. An equally well-known chanted vocal tops the brass-tastic 'Flamingo' from Hot Mood, and there are three more very playable nuggets where those came from!

Review: More multi-artist action from the effervescent Editorial label, a stable that has consistently delivered some of the strongest re-edits, remixes and reworks of the last few years. The imprint's most storied outfit, Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee, kick things off with the lolloping, piano-heavy disco positivity of "Spirit Power" - where sampled female speech provides an interesting focal point - while slow disco stalwart Duff Disco delivers the head-nodding, toe-tapping warm-up warmth of "Burning Hot". Elsewhere, Hotmood ups the heat and tempo on the P-funk-fired stomp of "I Was Born in Mexico" and Alex Zuiev lightly beefs up a swirling peak-time disco jam on EP standout "I Feel Funky".
