Fused Funk Vol 04
1
Various
2RUD - "Dunno Much About Dub" - (2:57) 159 BPM
Mash Masters - "Mad Them In The Brain" - (3:20) 155 BPM
Review: For a label that only launched this spring, four volumes of creatively executed party jams is beyond impressive. We reckon this could be Funk Fusion's best yet, too. From Rhythm Scholar's respectfully tripped out twist on "Lucy In The Sky" to Fabioulous Barker's slap-bass blazed take on Skeelow via the funkiest ever version of 2Pac's "California Love", it's an impressive collection that leans towards the more subtle art of editing rather than crass bootleg cut-and-shuts and will have a lot more timeless appeal as a result.

Various
Mash Masters - "Message From The Sofa" - (4:00) 154 BPM
DJ Snitch - "The Snake" - (5:22) 150 BPM
Review: Dealing strictly in extended collections, Funk Fusion continues its extensive work into 2015 with a 22-track compendium of killer edits, bootlegs and reversions. With an emphasis on fine-tuned, low-swung party jams; highlights include the subtle acid treatment of En Vogue ("Get It"), silky, synth-slapping disco boogie ("Mistery Island"), badass blue grass ("Bluesy Bounce"), Chic-style Public Enemy subversion ("Funky Enemy Number One") and smoke-stacked skank science ("Method Man"). Fusion by name, funky by nature: no party should be without this collection.

Party Breaks Vol 10
3
Chudy - "So What?" (Remastered) - (4:00) 155 BPM
Review: Hot on the heels of Tru Thoughts' recent Tasty Beats compilation, the firmly party orientated label has rustled up a tenth instalment of their Party Breaks series. Now it's time to shake it up at every house party you can find this summer! Highlights include Bang N Mash's funky old skool Eric B mash-up "I Got Soul", Chudy's "So What?" which intertwines the Tom Tom Club and Destiny's Child to sizzling effect and finally DJ Clairvo who fuses big beat, ragga and vintage organ stabs on "Here Me Now All Massive". Boom!

DJ Koze - "Bodenweich" - (4:25) 150 BPM
Review: Some DJs use the opportunity of a DJ Kicks mix to showcase the eclectic nature of their record collections, while others see it as a chance to give an airing to the dancefloor records that have inspired them over the years. Seth Troxler's selection sits somewhere in between. On the one hand, there are impeccable jazz and downtempo moments from the likes of Sun Ra, Herbert (as remixed by Phil Parnell) and DJ Koze, whose "Bodenweich" is an undeniably atmospheric, off-kilter delight. On the other hand, Troxler has picked out some genuinely brilliant, mostly US-centric house selections; deep, soulful and bumpin' fare from the likes of Butch, Kerri Chandler, Jasper Street Company, Mood II Swing and Derrick Carter.

Skeewiff vs Amphonic (Junodownload Exclusive Tracks)

Skeewiff / Various
Skeewiff & Dick Walter - "Scarper" - (3:58) 155 BPM
Skeewiff & Syd Dale - "First Steps" - (2:44) 152 BPM
Review: Funky break veterans Skeewiff are back (having apparently won 'Best Electro-Swing Producers Of The Year 2012 award), this time with a bumper packed collection of their remixes of cult 1970s British library music (one of their favourite sources of breaks). There's lots of loungey exotic action to choose from including the sassy, brassy "Scarper", the trippy "Hyper Hippo", the driving, clenched teeth disco rock of "Jet Propelled" and the many collabs with original bandleader Syd Dale (the best of which being the kitschy D&B of "Supermarket Hustle").

When You Find A Stranger In The Alps
14
LOL - (1:40) 152 BPM
Review: Given his productivity over the last four years, it's rather a surprise to find that "When You Find A Stranger In The Alps" is Mautits Verwoerd AKA Nachtbraker's debut album. Predictably, the sometime Heist Rand Dirt Crew producer is in fine form throughout, serving up an expansive, 13-track set that effortlessly flits between sparkling, melodious deep house floor fillers ("Flambo", "Randy"), reggae-tinged club tracks ("NSFW"), bouncy techno ("You Can't Run"), soul and disco-inspired mid-tempo shufflers ("The Dream Sequence", "Just Doing My Thing"), funk rock smashers ("Aliens") and a surprisingly large number of ambient interludes and MPC-driven beat-scapes. In other words, it ticks a lot of boxes whilst remaining enjoyable and entertaining throughout.

Bomb Strikes: Highlights 2023
16
Various
Ruckus Roboticus - "Hit Or Miss" (feat Arnae Batson) - (3:18) 150 BPM
Tom Booze - "The T-Funk" - (4:00) 150 BPM
Beat Le Juice - "2 Funky" (feat EVeryman & Mr Maph) - (3:50) 153 BPM
Review: No prizes for guessing what's going on here, as Leeds based Bomb Strikes label round up some of the best bits from their 2023 catalogue. The Niceguys' distinctly Prince-esque opener 'Strip It' sets the tone for a collection that draws mostly on hip-hop, funk and breaks for inspiration, with the emphasis firmly on uptempo, party-hearty vibes - see the fast 'n' furious rapping on Boca 45's '45s', the fat, squelchy funk of Tom Booze's 'T-Funk' (a track that wears its influences proudly in its title), or Nat Tate's charmingy, organic take on Gala classic 'Freed From Desire'. But there's room, too, for Bazza Ranks, Turnstyle & Venessa Jackson's cheesy-but-irresistible disco-houser 'Back To You', as well as Kraak & Smaak's driving, euphoric 'Get Live, Get Down', making for a strong, varied package overall.

Risco Version
18
Bringing Out The Sunshine (feat Otis Gayle) - (6:20) 159 BPM
Review: Risco Connection, a late 70s disco covers band put together by producer and reggae drummer Joe Isaacs, never released an album during their lifetime, despite having several hit singles. The cream of their output was, however, gathered together on an eponymous 2020 compilation on the Musica Paradiso label - an extended version of which now gets reissued by the mighty Strut. Including their takes on 'Good Times', 'I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)' and 'Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now', it's an album that's perhaps largely of historical interest, but worth picking up for those moments when the band's Jamaican roots are showing, such as on the Dub Version of 'Sitting In The Park'.

Colin Curtis Presents Jazz Dance Fusion 4
19
Various
Alonso Gonzalez & Jazz Latino - "Mr. Fool" - (5:15) 150 BPM
Review: In an industry where the term 'veteran' is bandied about far too freely, Colin Curtis is the real deal! His DJing career goes all the way back to legendary Northern Soul club The Golden Torch in the late 60s. In the 70s, he was a resident at Blackpool Mecca alongside Ian Levine, where he became one of the first DJs to introduce the more modern sound of jazz-funk to the scene. By the mid-80s he'd become an early UK champion of house, too, but these days it's on the jazz-dance scene that he's most revered - and here he serves up a 26-track connoisseur's collection that shows why. Ranging from straight-up jazz and soul to soulful house and leaning heavily towards the Afro- and Latin-flavoured, some of these cuts are recent offerings, some date back as far as the 70s, but on jazz-dance floors, all will go down a treat.

Freestyle/Soul & Disco!
20
Various
Deep Street Soul - "Souls Come Alive" - (3:00) 156 BPM
Candice Monique & The Optics - "My Child" - (4:13) 150 BPM
Review: Freestyle's series of genre-themed download bundles continues, with June's 'Afro & Latin!' and September's 'Funk!' comps now joined by this 40-track collection of soul and disco nuggets from the label's back catalogue. The set kicks off with a bona fide classic in the form of Omar's 'There's Nothing Like This', after which come 39 more cuts from the likes of Carleen Anderson, Kyle Audist and The Fantastics (not to mention, in featured vocalist form, Jocelyn Brown and Caron Wheeler). The title's something of a misnomer - the emphasis is firmly on 'new old' soul, future R&B and neo-soul rather than disco - but there's much to enjoy here all the same.

Boy (Incl. 4 free tracks with full album)
21
Boy - (3:24) 154 BPM
Review: Since debuting in 2013, Mike Katz has released a lot of music as Harvey Sutherland, flitting between interconnected styles (disco, deep house, jazz-funk, nu-boogie, U.S garage and Italo-disco included) without ever laying down an album of all-new music. Boy, then, is a significant milestone in Katz's career and offers an exploration of what he calls "neurotic funk" - a boundary-blurring fusion of jammed-out analogue electronics and live instrumentation that draws on a multitude of musical styles without neatly sitting in any one pigeonhole. Highlights include the squelchy boogie-soul revivalism of eye-catching DAM-Funk collaboration 'Feeling of Love', the sparkling jazz-funk-goes-boogie sunshine of 'Age of Acceleration', the simmering soul of 'Holding Pattern' (which features his first ever lead vocal) and the futurist post-punk/new wave flex of 'Type A'. In a word: brilliant.

Stratos Bleu
24
The Northern Coal Experience - (0:23) 152 BPM
Review: Album number six here from the northeast of England's finest neo-soul combo Smoove & Turrell. Coming like all five of its predecessors on the mighty Jalapeno Records, 'Stratos Bleu' sees the Gateshead gang exploring a slightly wider range of musical territory: 'This Time', for instance, operates at a soulful house tempo, while 'E.P.' has an almost Underworld-ish, indie-dance kinda feel. Synths n' samples play a more prominent role than on previous albums, too - though John Turrell's distinctive tonsils remain front and centre at all times, so existing fans needn't worry too much!

Love Or (I Heard You Like Heartbreak)
26
I'm In Love With You (Interlude) - (0:14) 157 BPM
Review: There's been enough variety and musical detail across Prequel's EPs for Local Talk, Distant Hawaii and Rhythm Section International to suggest that the Aussie artist would be capable of delivering a devastatingly good album or two. Love Or (I Heard You Like Outbreak), his first attempt at a full-length excursion, largely delivers on that promise, delivering an attractive blend of dusty samples, dreamy instrumentation, immaculate beat programming (think hip-hop, deep house, Latin beats, bruk, dancefloor jazz and low-slung disco-funk) and plenty of vivid aural colour. It's a winning combination, with highlights including the peak-time disco-jazz of 'I Tried To Tell Him', the ultra-deep jazz-house epic 'And That's The Story of Their Love', the Latin-bruk haziness of 'Love Is' and the thickset jazz-meets-dancefloor hip-hop flex of 'I'll Never Stop Loving You'.

The World Of Monnom Black III
28
Various
Mattia Trani - "Dreampunk" - (5:21) 150 BPM
Jadzia - "Surface" - (4:11) 155 BPM
Review: The third instalment of the Monnom Black compilation series sees the respected label delivering its distinctive, hard-edged techno. Villa's "Silhouetten Der Nacht" is a lean roller, while Levzon's "Planga" and Benkhlifa's "Basikstruktur" both deliver a more abrasive, visceral sound. However, the compilation also casts its gaze wide and possesses an impressive range. Umwelt contributes the epic string-led electro of "Echoes of the Storm", while Kashpitzky's hypnotic "Timeline" goes deeper while maintaining a focus on the dance floor. In keeping with this diverse approach, Black III even provides the listener with some ebm, delivered through the pounding, brutalist rhythms of LPV's "Arrival".

Som.1 - "Human Monster" - (2:58) 152 BPM
Review: More mysterious music from Laurent Garnier and Scan X's COD3 QR label. In keeping with the imprint's house style, the identities of the producers who have contributed tracks to this expansive, multi-artist extravaganza have been replaced by oblique code numbers. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the collaborative 'Last Night', where part spoken, part sung vocals rub shoulders with alien-sounding synth motifs and classic US house tropes atop a snappy deep house groove, and the piano-sporting deep techno-goes-deep house wonder of 'No Way' (another joint effort) to the breathless, Rex Club-friendly techno heaviness of 'Dealing With Loneliness' and the warming ambient jazz-meets-nu-jazz swell of 'For Gwen'.

Move Me (feat Laura Steel) - (2:35) 159 BPM
Review: Debutant Dampe resides in South East London, making tracks that fuse distinctively UK influences - think broken beat, the resurgent British jazz scene, Britfunk and off-kilter bass music - with nods to African music and the comforting sounds and dreamy chords of high quality deep house. You'll find all this and more on this expansive first outing, whose many highlights include the gentle tropical deepness of the Floating Points style brilliance "Zongo Junction, At Night", the beat-less, slowly unfurling bliss of "Move Me" and the drowsy broken house brilliance of "Peach Shuffle". That track is also remixed by Nebraska, who beefs up the beats and adds some jaunty new synths while retaining Dampe's deep and intoxicating vibe.

Faking Jazz Together

Faking Jazz Together (extended) - (6:01) 159 BPM
Review: Occasionally a remix comes along that just seems perfect. This remix of Connan Mockasin's "Faking Jazz Together" by Michael Mayer most definitely falls into this category, the Kompakt boss expertly retaining the idiosyncrasies of Mockasin's track but melding them with a truly sumptuous arrangement. At eight minutes long it still feels like it could go on forever without losing any of its enchanting warmth and impact. The Phantasy Sound label has scored some really interesting releases and remixers to date, but Mayer's remix can be considered a true highlight. Worth the price alone, Phantasy include an extended version of the original's psychedelic cocktail jazz refrain on this release along with a remix from The Horrors' Tom Furse. Whilst not close to the heights of Mayer's remix, Furse does a fine job of retaining the rattling sensation of the original whilst rewiring the mainframe with EBM overtones.

All Around - (6:12) 156 BPM
Review: Not all artists notch up a breakthrough release, so it's heartening to see Yann Polewka - a producer whose previous outings have promised much without making much of an impact - resurface on Roots For Bloom with a very impressive four-tracker. The producer's stated "French Touch" influences are evident among the breezy disco-house/soulful house shuffler of opener "Toute La Vie Pour S'aimer", while the cheery and filter-rich "All I Do" has all the makings of an underground disco-house classic, even if the sampled vocals tend more towards the R&B end of the spectrum. Elsewhere, "Luv Me, Baby" is a rush-inducing loop jam with dizzyingly high levels of positivity, and closer "All Around" is a huggable chunk of early liquid jungle/deep drum and bass dreaminess.

Review: S3A and Poon welcome Italian vibe maestro Tommy Garofalo to SAAAR for an lavish seven-piece soiree. Dusted with more of his dreamy jazzy signature he's been developing on labels such as Local Talk and G.A.M.M. Flexing from the squidgy mild acid disco funk of "Atmos" to the lolloping double bass jacks and warped strings and pianos of "TSOS" by way of the woozy aquatic synths and sensual soul whirls of "OrangePeelSkin" and far-out deep dream desert jazz ("The Deepest"), this is Turbojazz's most accomplished and generous EP to date.
