F4DE EP
2
F4DE - (5:08) 174 BPM
Monty & Icicle - "SVP" - (5:14) 174 BPM Hot
Whatever You Need - (5:09) 174 BPM
Monty & Visages - "Polar Wind" - (5:17) 174 BPM
Review: Few producers have carved out a production signature as twisted and unique as Monty, and the Toulouse-based artist is back on his home imprint of 1985 with another absolute percy of an EP. It's just as diverse as the others, and F4DE moves from jagged dancefloor rollers through to dubstep destruction and deep, distinct liquid sounds. The title tune smacks of previous conquest 'Quest', and its hugely complex array of interlocked sounds ooze sophistication in a manner that's befitting its clubland persona. 'Righteous' is a monster of a 140 track and you can smell the blood from the off, as a foreboding introduction leads you down the path of no return, straight into the belly of the beast. More minimal force follows on 'SVP' feat. Icicle, before two liquid cuts round off the lineup; we especially love the deliberate, purposeful bassline of 'Whatever You Need'. Sensational.

Incognito (feat Jerome Thomas) - (5:19) 172 BPM
State Of The Art (dub version - bonus track) - (4:51) 175 BPM
Review: As one of drum and bass' perennial figures, Jubei has spent the past few years putting out solid releases via respectable outlets like Critical's Modulations and Ingredients, but it's on Metalheadz where he's rooted most of his well-known back catalogue. Using this release to unleash his experimental side, Jubei picks his way through D&B and dubstep tempos as he collaborates with the likes of Consequence, Marcus Intalex, and even the big-in-the-game names of Goldie and dBridge. Also featured are DRS, SP:MC and Flowdan, lending their famous vocal talents to the LP which also hosts bonus track "State Of The Art (dub version)", a cold-hearted stepper from the depths of Jubei's twisted imagination. You'd be out of your mind to miss this.

Dark Guru EP

Egotrip - (4:33) 174 BPM
Gymnop?dies - (4:51) 174 BPM
Yalda - (5:56) 174 BPM Hot
Review: Visages has been one of the big A&R success stories of Perez's 1985 Music, and this four-track EP is the next evolution of his techy, hybrid sound. Dark Guru is titled with an absolute gem of a dubstep track, a loping 140 monster which oozes force and sophistication through waves of undulating low frequencies; a true class act that simply deserves to be heard in a club. The rest of the EP is 170, and the highlight is 'Egotrip', a devilishly sharp minimal roller that stays clear of boring tropes and instead blends guttural bassline sweeps with jagged synth stabs and biting percussive touches. 'Yalda' is also obscenely good, as a crunchy groove beds down amongst soulful vocal notes and shuddering basslines. Best in class.

Hagakure EP

Lunar Eclipse (feat Strategy - original mix) - (5:10) 172 BPM
Visages & Monty - "Familiarity" (original mix) - (5:17) 174 BPM Hot
Sunshine Mystery (original mix) - (4:10) 174 BPM
Review: Oh boy... Visages back on 1985 with another massive dub that's been doing the round: if you haven't heard 'Lunar Eclipse' with the truly electric vocals from Strategy in the dance or on mixes over the last few months, you haven't been paying attention. The exceptional collabos continue as Drone joins the French gang for a samurai session on the spooked-out 140 slammer 'Hagakure'. Up next: a fusion of young and old as 'Familiarity' (with Monty) warms up with a Virus-style flavour before going full 2022 venom on our asses and 'Sunshine Mystery' closes the EP with a note of Sunday morning soul. Easy.

Shadow Boxing 25th Anniversary Remixes
6
Shadow Boxing (Benny L remix) - (8:14) 172 BPM Hot
Shadow Boxing (Traumatize remix) - (4:54) 174 BPM
Shadow Boxing (The remix) - (9:00) 174 BPM
Review: Not many tracks are as widely renowned as Nasty Habits' (AKA Doc Scott) 'Shadow Boxing', a seminal number from the 1990s which you'll still hear out in clubs to this day (well, not right now). It's therefore about time it was given more remix treatment, as Benny L, Traumatize, J:Kenzo and Scott himself step up to bring us four new versions. Benny L's is hotly anticipated and the talented producer has stretched things out and toughened them up, leaving you on your seat with the suspense of his two-minute-plus introduction that gives way to a refined, growly take on that signature bassline. J:Kenzo contributes some percussive steppiness, whilst Traumatize injects some grit and Scotty rolls things out even more. Outstanding.

Waeys & SOLAH - "10,000" - (3:46) 174 BPM
B.B. - (4:45) 175 BPM Hot
Review: Waeys returns to Critical with four more steaming rave jams. 'Raw Flavour' says it all; a blistering head-rearranger with a rasping bassline and flips into springy breakbeat it's the perfect combo between the rougher UK style and the more cosmic European licks. Deeper into the EP we're immersed in a sea of powerful Waeys flavoured contrast as SOLAH joins the mix with the lush jazzy title track '10,000', 'B.B' goes full grizzly roller mode and P4VAN joins in on 'Vision' for a heavyweight dubstep finale. 10,000 reasons to be happy.

AMIT - "Cold Blood" - (4:42) 172 BPM
DBridge - "Own The Town" - (6:30) 170 BPM
Moresounds - "They Can't Handle It" - (4:36) 170 BPM
Review: Let's just list the amount of stone cold bass OGs on this collection: Krust, dBridge, Om Unit, Danny Scrilla, V.I.V.E.K, Von D, Moresounds, AU, Oris Jay & Chris Innersound and whole load more of soundsystem culture's most innovative craftsman working at the deepest levels of the low end coalface all feature on this immense and forward thinking document. Including the curator Amit himself. Every track is a highlight, each one and abyssal, immersive experience but essential highlights include the toxic bass bounces of Moresounds' "They Can't Handle It", the 23rd century UKG of Oris and Chris's "They Can't Handle It" and Krust's big screen masterpiece "Escape From Finland". Amit deserves a holiday. Or a massive trophy. Or both. Bass compilations don't get much bigger than this.

Rattler EP

Rattler (original mix) - (4:50) 174 BPM
Esoteric (feat En:vy - original mix) - (4:33) 172 BPM Hot
Pity (original mix) - (5:20) 172 BPM
Review: Following jams on Bowlcut and Monk earlier this year, Cesco returns to the 1985 mothership with this mighty fine mixed bag of 140/174 treats. 'Rattler' says it all. Curmudgeonly and grizzly, it sizzles out of the speakers with pure venom. Elsewhere on a D&B tip En:vy gets mucked in on tippy harmonics of 'Esoteric' while 'Pity' is all jazzy, slinky and full of tension. Meanwhile on the 140 flip 'El Guapo' is proper hammer jam with a most unruly bassline Q&A while 'Juan40' will have you speaking Spanish before you can say 'wheel up the bloodclart'. Rattle and roll!

Bass Hater

Bass Hater (feat dub Fx) - (3:43) 175 BPM Hot
Review: Supporting the long-awaited debut album from Italian bass mainstays Numa Crew, Liondub International presents a double-A side featuring the one and only Dub FX on the mic. "Bass Hater" is a Frankenstein's monster of classic drum & bass and hip hop with its fusion of half-tempo rhymes and up tempo drums, showing off ultramodern production built around tightly wound bass burbles, minimalist drums and fine musical details. The instrumental flipside "B.M.X" leads with plucked strings suddenly run into the digitizer once the beat drops, a tense track of modern beat science at its finest to show off the Crew's most experimental side. Get involved.

Review: At long last, French crew Visages drop their debut album and it's a powerful blend of tempos and styles, weaved together class and murky dark sonic mastery. From the woozy, dubstep swagger of the opener 'MK Ultra' to the stunning harmonics and dreamy soul of the finale 'Gaia' by way of a whole range of emotions in between, this is an exceptional debut album that says so much over so few tracks. High five to Visages and 1985.

Review: The Noisia remixes keep on firing out of the Vision HQ with unstoppable pace and an impressive range of styles and approaches. This fifth volume might be one of their biggest so far as contributors range from Annix to Bensley, Tsuruda to Kasra to Sorza and so many more in between. Every track is a highlight but special shouts go to the legendary Skynet for his blisteringly sci-fi take on 'Banshee', H0st's glitchy, tripped-out take on 'Diplodocus' and Molecular's tense and emotional flip of 'Bad Dreams'. Powerful scenes.

Some of the tunes have become in demand 2022 IDs already - including Monty and Visages's 'Tek' and Alix Perez's beautiful 'Not Alone' - other highlights include the monstrous junglism of ICJ's 'Metrodome', Visages' woozy blues on 'Love Conspiration', Cesco's happy-slapping 'No Fuss' and Paige Julia's almighty 'Ease Your Mind'. Review: Following his entry appearance on the label's cracking Edition V/A a while back, Welsh deepsmith Cesco makes his full debut on Alix Perez's 1985 with four sterling stripped-back steppers. "Angry Waves" sets the pace. Pneumatic drums, clipped vocals and the groaniest bass you'll hear this side of quarantine, anger never sounded so good. Elsewhere "ABR" whips up graveyard feels, "Ping Pong" plays pocket billiards with your brain while "Chair Dub" brings home the bacon on a moody 140 tip. What a label debut. Keep Cesco on your radar.

Switching through bouncy dancehall vibes to the deep, dubby sway of Von D's delightfully filthy dubstep mix, there's plenty to get those feet moving here. Raise your hands and lower your caps, it's about to get messy.

Review: Signature drop Calibre's best work to date with "Steptoe." A deft halfstepper that displays rigid programming and sumptuous bass weight, this is a subtle killer from Calibre. It has hint of jungalism and the peaceful melodies set it apart from the rest of his work. B-side "Silence" is less refined but rolls out a worthy number in itself.

As you'd expect, the vibes hit thick and fast as each remixer brings their best game. Highlights include Gyrofield's haunting, near-medieval twist on 'Banshee', Forbidden Society returning to the collection with a smouldering, swaggering roller, Burr Oak's turbulent happy-slapping tech tear-up of 'Stigma' and MACHINEN's industrial strength take on 'Hand Gestures'. All this and so much more, Noisia manage to whip up world beating albums even after they've split up.

Taking us on a trip through his influences and widescreen musical vision, the album stretches from full-on technoid D&B ('Hard Times') to bubbling, twisted funk ('Werk It') via smouldering, unclassifiable dark soul ('Ride Or Die') and dreamy breakbeats ('Standing By') With many other sides to his sound revealed throughout, this is an exceptional and very impressive album.

Start Again - (5:06) 175 BPM
Review: Mainly famed for his startlingly sparse, soulful grooves, here Calibre reminds us of the badman he keeps locked up within his creative mind. The slinky, menacing "Start Again" is one of the highlights of his recent album Spill; all paranoid and cinematic, the half-tempo groove is the perfect bed for Chimpo's distinctive, demonic spittage. In a classic VIP flip-switch manoeuvre, the remix takes us back to the mid '90s with a spiralling, tunnel-like bassline, classic rattling breakbeats and some added 'whoo's for good measure. Naturally Chimpo's vocal works equally as well over this type of lick. In fact if you didn't know any better you'd think he wrote it for the VIP in the first place.

Review: This release honestly doesn't mess around. It carries a serious sense of potency despite its clear lack of sophistication, because D&B of this type simply isn't about sophistication, it's about making something so filthy the audience won't even understand what hit them. Vital has certainly accomplished that here, I mean just have a listen to the glitched out, synth-based badassery that is 'Hangman Posse', a beautifully spacious tune that still manages to make you feel like you've been attacked by a dog. This is a crazy release from start to finish.

This one from Uncommon has a cool combination of bigger and smaller acts, from the mighty Kasra to lesser known quantities like Resist. Kasra's 'Needles' is a standout, a fiercely minimal slapper that gargles and gurgles its way straight into your brain, and for anyone that is into the Critical sound: this is the tune for you. Kanine, another rising star, hits hard on 'Searching', a tune that reminds us of the recent Klippee tracks over on Lifestyle Music. All in all, this is a very solid little VA - yes yes!

Review: It's finally landed! Justin Hawkes lays down an almighty statement in the form of his debut album 'Existential'. Written during lockdown and his recent rise to the very top of the line-ups on his stateside stomping ground, this epic collection captures an exciting moment in time for both Justin and international drum & bass. Ranging from out-and-out universal underground bangers like 'Black Bloc', 'Cadence' and 'Inheritance' to more commercial, mainstream US tinged moments like the EDM-heavy 'Passion' and the country-tastic 'Better Than Gold', this is the full widescreen snapshot of where Justin is at and what he stands for. We can't wait to see where he takes things next as US D&B hits more and more new heights.

Review: Make way for the latest hype ting from Serial Killaz in the shape of "What A Ting" - and what a ting it is. Characterized by a roots reggae/dub vibe mixed with futuristic jungle breaks and fat bass sounds, it's found its way into the record boxes of the likes of Public Enemy's DJ Lord, Rusko and many others as well featuring on Diplo's Mad Decent blog and receiving massive worldwide radio support. Here he teams up with UK MC Parly B for his firin' debut, and what a massive boost it is for the roots-loving contingent. Packed with riddim and blazing lyricism, it's the stuff that dancefloors were made for.

Jubei - "Rufige 11" - (5:17) 172 BPM
Played by: S Man, Rob Perpetual
Review: It's hard to think of a time when Jubei wasn't ubiquitous. Truth be told, it wasn't until 2010 that his blend of crisp, popping percussion and bubbling bass got widely accepted by the general D&B consciousness, but now here we are. Releasing on home label Metalheadz, this double-sider takes no chances from the outset, pushing straight in with old-school cinematic waves of colour between big, bold clouts of finely-tuned percussion. Working with J Kenzo on the flip, expect deeper dubstep sounds with a techy twist. Nicely does it.

Escape Roots & Dandelion - "Ganja Socks" (T-Kay remix) - (4:26) 175 BPM
Review: Since their inception, there are few labels that have been able to tie the fusion of Jamaican system-influenced sounds with the UK underground as well as the Nice Up! Team. We have been absolutely loving their journey in recent times, with this latest selection seeing them gathering some of their biggest hitters for one of our favourite compilation drops of 2021. That list of heavy hitters includes the likes of Danny T, Tradesman, Red Eye HiFi, Taxman, Escape Roots and many more, all of whom contribute a fantastic combination of instrumental and vocal fire. The quality level is so high, from the footwork inspired drum rolls of Casement's 'Mutiny', to Congi's spacious rethink of Origin One's 'Dead & Buried' and even Gray's big room recreation of 'Strangers' from Mr Benn & Tiya X An. There are a couple of clear highlights for us, including Wrongtom's dubwise rethink of Seanie T's 'Veterans', which features one of the most vibrant collections of UK hip hop vocalists we have ever seen. As well as this, the Riddim Punks rework of Think Tonk & General Jah Mikey's 'None Of Dem' is anthem material if ever we heard it. Fantastic work!

Review: Bam! No word, no warning, no hype, no histrionics; just king DRS casually dropped a new album sized mixtape full of brand new originals with artists such as Dogger, Sl8r, Chiccoreli, Zar, Disrupta and Mindstate (to name a few) Loaded with interesting skits and interludes, along with a full mix version, this is DRS at his most wide armed, soulful and vibrant. Juiced up with plenty of fodder for the soulful DJs to spin, but sculpted as a musical experience, this is an amazing deep dive into the deepest corners of Delrokski's soul.

Review: Drumsound and Bassline Smith's mainstream D&B assault is well worth watching. Applying catchy pop sensibilities to their tonked-out bottom-heavy technique, they're nipping at Fresh and Sub Focus's heels with real determination. Remix-wise we see Northern Lights throwing down a big dubstep vibe that sizzles and snarls with metallic menace while Tantrum Desire switches up for a speedy spliced and diced technicolour D&B version. Big.

Figjam - (6:54) 172 BPM Hot
Waiting - (5:39) 172 BPM
Therapy - (5:54) 174 BPM
Review: 2014 seems to be serving long standing D&B producer Steve 'Digital' Carr very well so far, with the "Mini Cooper" contribution to the fourth Platinum Breakz compilation from Metalheadz complemented by a release for the Rupture label and now this debut for Horizons! It's not hard to see why "Figjam" is the lead track here with a knee shattering combination of razor sharp reeeses, crisp amens and heavy basslines making it a contender for moody anthem of 2014. Don't sleep on the B-side though, as Digital drops a sly 23rd century stepper with hints of Detroit hi-tech jazz on "Waiting", whilst "Therapy" weighs in with a more dub-focused sound that will appeal to fans of dBridge.

Review: Teebee's Subtitles signs up refreshing-sounding Italian newcomer with a four-piece riot. "Jah" sounds like a stripped back, dancehall-inspired Dom & Roland joint, all steppy and aggy without any unnecessary flab and a tech-like insistency. "Carcosa" retains the steps but switches the MC vocals for deep sea bubble blowing. "Choices" flips the halftime switch with moody b-boy swagger while "Switch" is shows the trap guys how things are done down 172 street. A really exciting debut from an artist who needs to be kept on radar-lockdown.

Blind Summit (LSN remix) - (5:43) 170 BPM
Token Image (Trace remix) - (5:44) 170 BPM
Review: As one of the most consistent dubstep imprints out there, seeing Artikal Music welcome the one and only J:Kenzo back is always going to be an exciting moment for any steppers fan. This time around however, it's remix season, as Kenzo invites ten guests inside for a fiery display of re-distributed energy. The project has some awesome names involved, from the likes of 140 royalty such as Boyland and Unkey, to abstract soundsmiths such as LSN and Coco Bryce, who both flip Kenzo's work into spacey junglist rollers. Our highlights would have to include the monstrous bass designs of MYTHM's 'Narky' rethink, next to the digitised funk of Mani Festo's 'Deadbull' overhaul. Awesome work!
