Review: Jungle Cakes always tend to put out music that rests on the foundations of UK underground, the cross-over influences of soul, reggae, jungle and D&B. it's always a fresh sound and it always brings up connotations of Boomtown, free parties and sunny afternoons. This is a monster album curated by Aries and Kelvin 373, who have taken tracks both old and new to form a banging compilation. Bou nails it on 'Music Takes Me Higher', a rustic revisit to classic jungle sounds; Aries and Nicky Blackmarket roll things out in a tight way on 'Champion'; and Chimpo slams the brakes on 'DidDieDoThat'. We don't know the answer to that, but we do know this is fat. Big ups.

Review: A couple of cute jungle cuts from The Wildlife Collective (alias of Ed Solo and Deekline) on suitably delectable imprint, Jungle Cakes. A warm, woozy vocal led narrative in lead track "I Need A Dollar" tells a tale like a modern day reggae top line. Beautiful booming bass adds solid foundations from below whilst tooting trumpets and pattering breaks shimmy along nicely above. On the flip, "Bad Bwoy" is another tribute to Jamaican sound culture, referencing Remarc's early 90s jungle interpretation "Bad Bwoys" along the way. There's a hint of Serum & Bladerunner in there, with classic sounds pared with modern production techniques and polished drums. Absolutely brilliant.

Review: As ever, it looks like the legendary Shy FX is out to cause a ruckus in the raves as he unveils this brand new remix project, inviting some of the most talked about names in D&B to get involved with official remixes for for last year's 'Raggamuffin' project. From start to finish we are greeted with a pretty monumental roster, as we see the likes of The Sauce, SPY, Kings Of The Rollers, Breakage and more get involved. It's a mark of Shy FX's untouchable status within the scene to see just how well put together this project is, from the gnarly, rolling subs we find within Bou's remix of 'Warning' alongside Gappy Ranks, to the special acoustic version of Maverick Sabre's 'Call Me' collaboration. The whole selection just oozes class, with our highlight having to be Skeptical's on point remix of Balaclava, which see's him rework MC Spyda, D Double E and Frisco's catchy vocal runs into a dark & dangerous piece of dancefloor dynamite. Amazing work!

Review: Bassbin worriers Ed Solo and Deekline return to their Jungle Cakes label for more natty and eminently danceable vintage riddims soaked in recognisable vocal hooks. Barrington Levy's "Under Me Sensei" has proved an inspiration to the jungle and drum and bass heads for many years now and the duo manage to eek further fun out of that distinctive vocal on "Sensei", which deviates nicely between rolling rhythms wrapped tight around booming sub bass and nicely poised steppah breakdowns. The flip brings the junglist flavour to the iconic "Ghost Town" which song purists might recoil in horror at, but there has always been a playful nature to these Jungle Cakes releases - drop this at the right moment and the dancefloor will respond in suitably enthusiastic terms.

Dig deeper for the head-turning, triplet-twisted hype riser "Mk Q", the subversive alien trippiness of "Death Sport" and the spacious reverberations and epic hollow-bass drop of "Meen Time". Hazard doesn't release EPs that often, but when he does the scene bricks it. This is beyond solid.

Review: Jappa is in this game to do serious damage to the eardrums of those who listen and this single seems like it was made with that objective in mind. The first tune, 'Keep On Movin' is clean and sparse in the drums which lends extra clarity to the bassline, an elongated expression of moodiness with a quality injection of additional bounce. 'Back To Life' strikes a similar chord but does so with more vigour, a haunting sample fills up the highs whilst a driving back end pushes the track forwards with pace and momentum. Big EP.

Review: Dutch drum and bass lynchpins Noisia clearly believe their latest release Dead Limit, a joint effort with irregular collaborators The Upbeats, is something special with a limited 12" double-pack edition featuring a poster and t-shirt. Those who prefer their Noisia in binary form will not be disappointed with just the music as these four tracks find them in rip-roaring form from the very off. The title track does that special Noisia trick of starting off quite calm before swiftly unleashing all manner of sonic hell, whilst "Inverse" deftly weaves between intense soundscapes and tightly wound beats. "Omnivore" is the type of track you deploy when you want a dancefloor to explode whilst "Mouthbreather" is the sonic equivalent of encountering a hungry great white shark in a bad mood.

Turno takes the lead with a full fat-and-gristle shake-up of Dominator's "Holes In Ya Chest" while Voltage adds an array of unique sonic twists and designs on his take on "Willy Wonka". Dig deeper for the unstoppable Decimal Bass letting loose with a confident swagger on "Shoot Dem" and Konichi sets his space lasers to stun on "The Shuttle Skank". Finally DJ Limited lays down not one but two remixes of Jayline's "Peanut Butter On Toast". Part one rolls with some really cool old school middy tones while part two combines an early TC style squelch. Both are exceptional.

Review: Jungle veteran Potential Badboy has been operating professionally longer than many of us have been out of school (or even short trousers / the womb) After a brief hiatus from the release world, he's come back all bass guns blazing with a skank-packed homage to soundsystem culture. From the melodica tooting "Beat Of The Ghetto" to the rifle drum charm and sensuous harmonies of "Hot In Here" to the leaner steps of "Sound Boy" and MC Fats' sugar-coated "Gimme The Rhythm", this is the definition of 'all killer / no filler'. It's also the definition of a broad-screened, dynamically arranged D&B album that works just as well as a complete listening experience as it does a collection of dancefloor heaters. Nothing potential about it; this is the real deal.

Review: Since signing Bournemouth duo Ulterior Motive to his Metalheadz imprint last year, Goldie has acted as a kind of mentor, supervising the recording of this debut album. In many ways, it makes a lot of sense; Ulterior Motive's brand of jungle-influenced drum and bass no doubt appeals to the producer-turned-celebrity's rave sensibilities. The Fourth Wall is a confident and engaging debut, with spangling, piano-laden rave moments - see the early '90s revivalism of "Tape Pack" - nestling side by side with dark, twisted rollers and deeper, more experimental fare. It's this latter strand - and most particularly the James Sutherland collaboration "Muted" - that makes The Fourth Wall such an impressive debut.

Review: Technique Recordings, founded by Drumsound & Bassline Smith back in 1999, is turning 20 this year and they're releasing a huge remix compilation to celebrate. Featuring remixes from artists old and new of Technique's best tracks, mostly originals from the founders themselves, this album stretches across 27 heavy, dancefloor numbers. The first outing, a remix of 'Come With Me' by Bladerunner, is classic KoTR vibes and we love the array of twisting, snarling basses that fans of this producer will recognise. Shouts also to Digital for his swirling remix of 'I Need Somebody', featuring some classic amens, and also Smooth for his popping remix of Tantrum Desire's 'Vybez'. Top stuff from a stalwart of the scene.

Review: Born On Road is one of the new-school of labels pushing the current moment's gritty, jump-up infused sound, the sound that has captured so many new fans to the genre in the past couple of years and which has catapulted the careers of Ben Snow, AC13 and others. Review: Random Concept calling an EP "Floor Fillers" is like Mr Kipling naming his new range of cakes as 'tasty'... We can't think of a release on the label that hasn't filled the floor! Stating the obvious is just one of the label's strengths, they can also put together a serious all star cast, as proved right here: Jayline's "Tommy Knocker" flexes with a vocal power that's reminiscent of DJ SS and Warren G's work together, Filthy Habits continue to dominate with a powerful jump-up ripper while Saxxon does a really trippy trick as a jazzy riff comes out of a radio tuning sample before leaping into a demonstratively dark bass riff. Elsewhere we find bong-busting Blackley doing the funky triplet thing on "Botanical", Modified Motion add a little bounce to the collection with a blend that's highly reminiscent of Moving Fusion back in the day while RV and Garry K close the show with an eerie stepper, all stretched out hollow bass and cheek-splintering snares.

Review: Nu Elementz is one of the many rising stars in the newly invigorated jump-up scene at the moment and, despite being a stalwart of that scene for years now, his popularity has surged in tandem with his production skills. His new album - titled X (very catchy) - is evidence of that shift and we're loving it, a ten-tracker packed full of the type of bangers that've seen him performing all over Europe. The surprise of the bunch is 'Didn't I', a sample-laden liquid track that rests on some seriously nice sampling and a gorgeous atmosphere of nonchalance and relaxation. Review: St Petersburg drum and bass producer presents us with his fourth album of high tech engineered drum and bass, guaranteed to deliver some serious future shock. There's some real dystopian themes overshadowing this album, but Aleksei Ergachevnov has the right knack for sound design to pull of the concept and album as a whole. There's some undeniable influences from some of the masters of the craft, such as Ed Rush and Optical and Peshay, but he's definitely representing the new garde of breakbeat science pretty damn well. Highlights include the subterranean sonar transmissions of "Iron Curtain", the jazzy liquid breaks of "Moment Of Now (feat Frank Carter III", the evil futurist minimalism of "Just One Look (Feat. Charli Brix)" and the peak time destroyer "Between The Split". One for the heads.

Review: No other artist in the game could pull a stunt like this off: Such is his proliferation, Calibre's Shelflife series are his way of gathering ideas that he felt weren't right for single releases, or dubs that he just never got round to putting out. As with previous editions, the whole collection rolls like an album due to his consistent, spacious signature. Highlights: How about every track? You need specifics? The piano-slapping sunny-side opener "Latin Way", the big jazzy washes and lolloping rolls on "Model Way", the pushy, gritty breaks on "Spirit Catcher", the wriggling drums, stark minimalism and mid 2000s techno feel to the hook on "Underfire". We could go on and on. It's Calibre - you know what to do.

The universally respected young Russian artist has done nothing but impress since he burst onto the D&B scene a few years ago. And safe to say, Machines lives up to all the hype and expectation. Bringing together all the elements that make up his characteristic sound expect tough, tech-y terseness alongside sparse, minimal moments and driving energy. The title track gets things off to a great start with its infectious, pulsing energy. Elsewhere watch out for tracks like the vocal-driven loveliness of "Runnin (feat. Georgia Yates)" as well as the bleep n click-y "I Don't Know", the moodiness of "Thin Line", plus a VIP of old favourite "Cracker" and a June Miller remix of "Movin Fast". A superb debut from Enei.

Review: Shogun Audio don their shades and stare into the blisteringly bright future of drum & bass with a brand new series; Point Of Origin. The idea is to represent some of the most exciting names (old and new) with an open mind to the many sub-sub-genres drum & bass seems to have right now. As a result we excitingly flicker from lush emotional jazz (Ed:It's "Centre Suite") to unruly sheet metal neuro in the space of a track (Posij - "Shieldbreaker"). Much deeper into the set we hit icy vocal soul from the likes of Need For Mirrors and Liz-E, we get flattened by Zero T's tribal thunder drums and experience a blissful rolling lullaby from Karma. This is the tip of the Point Of Origin iceberg, though... A must-check for all future-focussed junglists.

Review: Guzi, with the speed of an Uzi and the glamour of Gucci, is landing on Sub-Liminal Recordings with an unsophisticated but incredibly fun release, one which, if you hear out live, is certain to get you moving. There's a carelessness and a freedom to these tracks and it's a tangible sense of kinetics. The title track kicks things off in style but it's 'Shadow' feat. BP MC that really takes the cake, a winding, subby track that flips between wobbiling shimmers and jump-up stabs. It's a wicked track and definitely the highlight of the release. 'Shroud' feat. Peggy Sewage - great name - is another absolute banger but one that's deep and wispy in all the right ways. Sick release.

Review: Have played gangsters all summer with Jenks, young jump-up talent ACP whips up a storm on Escalation Sound with 'The Wait'. Crisp and contemporary, each cut is chiselled down to the bare groove bone as he gets twisted in all kinds of gortty and alien ways. 'Bangers' is especially of note as he flexes on a sinewy lazer in an almost trippy and hypnotic way. 'Leg Bender' continues that flavour, too as a teasing dreamy intro drops into a frog chorus that's so greasy you need a shower just reading these words. Worth it.

Review: This album represents a collision of worlds: on the one hand, the fact-paced and furious drum & bass tradition of Jungle Cakes; the other, the seminally classic reggae, dub and ska tones of Trojan Records. These worlds are connected, of course, as the latter was a key part in the evolution of the former, and this album celebrates that connection by giving a fresh, 170 spin on a load of Trojan classics. The Serial Killaz and Deekline remix of 'Reggae From the Ghetto' by John Holt, the recipient of Benny L's infamous 'Police in Helicopter' remix, is a fantastic blend of hard-hitting sub bass and funky reggae sampling, as the pair concoct a superb number with an infectious heart. Ben Snow adds jump up grit to 'Uptown Top Ranking', whilst the Ed Solo remix of '007 (Shanty Town) is another top class highlight. Incredible stuff.

Wasting no time getting started with the '80s sci-fi influenced Godzilla, he delivers another bunch of true steppers in the form of the liquid breaks of "Sixty Nine" reminiscent of early Good Looking Records material, the peak time jump up anthem "Ganja" which is sure to be a hit and closing things out with the wonky grime crossover of "Dumbo".

Review: You can always bank on Subby releasing one massive EP every year. And this one's extra massive as he's brought four mates along for the ride. Complementing his already beautifully brutal style, each collaboration brings out a different side in the Newcastle producer: Maji tickles the jump-up darkness out of him on "Weapon Of Choice", Jaydan encourages a little off-beat subversion while retaining the dancefloor punch while Dub Motion complements Sub Zero's jungle roots with a delicious roller that's as soulful as it is dark. Finally we hit "How To Act" where Sub Zero and DJ Limited lay down the trippiest, most weirded out bassline you'll hear all week, month, possibly even year.

Review: Nuusic are a fairly new label that really don't mess around and their output tends to land on the tougher, more dancefloor orientated end of the spectrum. Akuma by Teej and featuring Jappa, Disrupta and Riko Dan continues that trend, with four big cuts that are definitely set to blow up the dance. 'Akuma' has a distinctly Serum vibe to it, with a stuttering jungle break and a warped, stabby bassline that contorts itself around every corner of the range. 'War Cry' takes things more rolling with a wicked, snapping snare and a wobbling wall of sine basses to back it up, bringing a lovely clean feeling that's also on '16 Speakers'. Wicked.

Review: Sub Zero don't need a write-up from us to get you pumped, the bassline on "Inside the Beast" already has floors packed out for months and things aren't getting any less claustrophobic. This EP brings out all the things we love about Sub Zero in one neat, destructive package. Big bass, slammin' snares, the ridiculous beats... let's face it, nobody does it better. In amongst the jump-up there's some real experimental gems, pushing his sound further than ever before in tunes like "Bakyard Skank" and steamy roller "Hearts On Fire". Well worth a shuffle.

Review: Norwich boy Upgrade has been dishing out his own brand of bass-driven pain on the circuit for a little while now and joining the Serial Killaz has pushed his name to the top of the scene's agenda ready for 2015. Pushing forth with severely snapping beats and dirty bass, there's more than a bit of minimal and even techy influence making its way into this guy's production as he continues the never-ending search for that perfect industrial sound. Featuring a VIP of massive hip-hop-styled "Gunshots" as this mega EP's finale, it's nothing if not excellent value for money, running at eight tracks total. When it's all as good as this, you'll still be craving more.

Review: Last seen on Serial Killaz strong-arm brand in the icy winter of 2014 with his "Killer Business" EP, South East chop-slapper Upgrade returns with another generous collection; both "Your Minds Eye" and "You Ain't Well" are balls-out sandpaper grooves with all the broken glass soul you'd expect from both Upgrade and the label. "Murderer" strip teases with a much leaner dynamic and a well known Missy Elliot lick while "Mr Lover" wriggles and tickles with a classic double-up bassline dynamic. Finally "Skunk Drunk" is a stinky, sticky wasp's nest of a track with a dagger-like middy bassline stabbing relentlessly. Pure filth.

Review: Coming in hot off the back of some great releases is both Sota and label Pick N Mix, who have collaborated on the producer's 8Bit EP, a six-tracker that spans a variety of sounds, all of which are driving and filled with purpose. Title track '8Bit' is a jagged roller with a great flowing feel to the percussion and an arrangement chock a block with funk and soul, despite its constituent elements being far from soulful. That's the sign of a good heavy D&B track and both producer and artist have nailed it.

Review: Bringing people together through the power of good drum and bass isn't alien to these guys - Gun Audio run City Flow Festival back home in Antwerp, offering one of the biggest platforms for hard hitting jump-up sounds in Western Europe. Review: If anyone knows how to slap down a classic bass groove, it's T>I. The man behind some of the south coast's naughtiest raves throughout the last 20 years, there's very little he doesn't know about dark rolling dynamics. Proof can be found on each of these six tracks with highlights including the lean stark funk of "Fractions", the Ram Trilogy-style tones of "Velvet", the awesome cymbal smashing and splashing on "Funk You!" and the eerie textures of "Low Ace". Straight to the tops.

Review: This compilation arrives with a rich heritage of V Recordings compilations behind it, and Planet V has for a number of years been the flagship series for Bryan Gee's label. Edition four comes to a whopping 73 tracks and includes a mix as well, and all the familiar V faces are present, from Alibi to Paul t & Edward Oberon. All of the tunes have already seen the light of day in a previous form, and Disrupta and Duskee's 'Deep Thoughts' is one of the standouts, as Disrupta lays down a minimal yet funky beat for Duskee to rap lyrical over, something he does with serious presence. New gun SL8r makes several appearances, including on the excellent 'What U Need', which bounces along in a synthscape of serious depth and texture, its funky nodes nodding to the beat of a vintage blend. Crossover outfit Think Tonk also shine with 'Tom & Heavy', an offering unique in its stepping, breaksy percussion and one which oozes soulful class. There are dozens more to have a gander at, so take your pick.

Review: One of the several young talents that have been inculcated by Overview Music, Waeys is a Dutch producer who moved over from the world of halftime and beats to drum & bass and bloody hell, is he good at it. Objection is a blend of jumpy, foghorn sounds with tighter, more minimal tones and it's a combination he has apparently mastered. There are jumpy dance inclinations on the title tune and 'Ultimatum', whilst 'Mapper' takes a foreboding but simple bassline and intersperses it with tugs and pulls of foghorn wizardry. The overall result is club-friendly, superbly well engineered and incredibly moreish. More to come, we hope.

We knew there was some badness in there somewhere. Lastly, get ready for a Speed Garage remix, taking tips from the old school in a big way as the sound of UKG reigns supreme once again.

Review: The Birmingham based jump up maestro that is DJ Hazard continues to stun audiences across the globe with his signature shade of D&B. And it's safe to say that the hype surrounding "Never The Same EP" is well and truly warranted. Kicking off with the title track, the echoing vocal sample immediately gives the tune an epic, almost euphoric, quality; add grouchy bass, chiming SFX and punchy drums to the equation and you have an anthem in the making. But that's not all, no; "Air Guitar" ups the ante yet again with punishing, gritty roars and growling subs. "It's A Secret" is another wobbly jump up banger with Hazard written all over it, and then "Do Without You" twists things up with more bass-driven badness. This comes highly recommended for all D&B heads.

Review: Kicking off with a VIP of one of the killer 90s jungle nostalgia anthems of 2010 - Bladerunner's "Back To The Jungle" - it's a great start to the next Critical compilation. Moving through the tough, percussive sounds of Break, soulful dub tinged efforts of Breakage, the blissed out Calibre in "Rockafella" to the sounds of man-of-the-moment, hotly tipped Enei with his fantastic "Forgive Me" around the halfway point, it's immediately apparent why Kasra's label has garnered such respect from his peers. Lomax - one half of Loadstar - provides a deeper incarnation to his Ram bangers in "Innocent X" and elsewhere, Rockwell's "Underpass" makes a re-emergence as does ubiquitous anthem "Redlines" which closes this utterly superb compilation.

Review: In 1990 rave legends Rat Pack sang 'I can feel another rush coming on...' While no one can prove this, we suspect they were singing about this absolute stamp sesh from Belgian bump thumper Basstripper. Laced with a trippy vocal texture, a shimmering synth texture on the breakdown and a sizzling hot coal bassline, it's definitely worth singing (and dancing) about. Rat Pack never sang about extreme weather but don't let that stop you from hammering "Typhoon". Switchy, bouncy and once again coded with some pretty trippy textures, Basstripper nails it once again.

Review: The Fibonacci Sequence is in everything... It's in the patterns of pinecones, the eye of a hurricane, the swirl of the galaxies... And now in your own collection as man like Skeppy returns with his first fresh produce since his debut album last yeah Enjoy This Trip. Four cuts deep, all rumbling with Skeptacular bassweight, it's a stark return to form for the influential producer. "Charge" is a proper bulldozer roller vibe, "Snail Trail" is a graveyard ballet creeper while "Mechanism" has a proper waspish mischievous buzz running through the groove. Last but not least we have the deep brooding title track. Proper percussive rolling headnodder, fans of "Imperial" will be all over this. Exceptional.

Review: You know a young artist is one to keep close tabs on when they're linking up with Skibadee. Such is the case with young Pengo, a fast-rising artist who's best known for his killer shows on Rough Tempo. Already boasting collabs with the likes of GLM, Hyn and Amplify, 'Shots' is his third co-lab with the pioneering MC and arguable his best so far. It's backed up by a whole truck-load of trouble; the Magenta collab 'Blast' is a lesson in space and tension, 'Hitters' is all growl and grit, 'Back & Forward' is an all-out moaner with very trippy tendencies while 'Bass Addict' (with Master Error) is all about the drama and theatre. Last but not least 'Dot To Dot' pays homage to the jungle foundations with some crucial bars from NV. Shots fired!

Review: Liondub are celebrating a decade of existence and they're doing a three-part compilation series covering the past, present and future of the label. By definition, then, these series' feature plenty of talent from all across the spectrum and time period of the genre. One of our favourite of the 26 cuts is Bou's VIP of Keep Away, a deliciously double-bass infused number that is both funky and heavy, the ideal combination, and he's flipped up the arrangement here with some precisely placed note changes. There are also features from Vital, Euphonique, Dutta, Marcus Visionary and more, with the overall vibe being one of toughness and power. Top stuff.

Review: Hailing from Coventry, DJ Hybrid has firmly established himself over the last couple of years as someone at the forefront of D&B's re-discovered love for jungle-influences and bouncy but hard-hitting basslines. Drawing upon those influences, he's back on Natty Dub Recordings for a full-throated six-tracker that kicks off with title track 'Push The Dub', a gently weighted sine-based wobbler that pushes on every corner of the range. 'Back in the Day' and '808 Roller' have clear Kings of the Rollers vibes, with juddering bass pulses and that recognizable sense of hardware-based rawness. This release has overtones of Manchester and undertones of the South - proper UK underground stuff.

Review: Drum & bass's most unique gentleman Calibre plunders his vaults to compile a new collection of unreleased gems through the ages. As you'd expect, the end result is a timeless assault of lush grooves, soulful sonics and sweet skippy riddims. From the soft jazz insistency of "Honey Dew" to the hollowed harrowed bass tones of "Bellamee" via the harder, rave-referencing "Sagan" and the deep bass gurgles and DRS's reggae-style vocals on "Eschaton", the only issue here is the fact Calibre hasn't released them sooner. Unarguably incredible.

Review: Dominator, the jump up legend taken from us far too soon, is being given the remix treatment of by a whole load of legends, including Upgrade, DJ Limited, T>I and Telekom & Flat T. The result is varied, moody release that touches beautifully upon all the elements of urban-edged dance music, including naughty rollers, stuttering jungle-influenced tracks and everything in between. T>I's remix of 'Hooked' very much falls into the latter category, with a rigid but solid break that underpins the wispy sense of ambience provided by the constant pads looming over the arrangement. The others are equally sick, especially Upgrade's storming remix of 'Business Man'. RIP Dominator - what a tribute this is.

Review: As one of drum and bass' perennial figures, Jubei has spent the past few years putting out solid releases via respectable outlets like Critical's Modulations and Ingredients, but it's on Metalheadz where he's rooted most of his well-known back catalogue. Using this release to unleash his experimental side, Jubei picks his way through D&B and dubstep tempos as he collaborates with the likes of Consequence, Marcus Intalex, and even the big-in-the-game names of Goldie and dBridge. Also featured are DRS, SP:MC and Flowdan, lending their famous vocal talents to the LP which also hosts bonus track "State Of The Art (dub version)", a cold-hearted stepper from the depths of Jubei's twisted imagination. You'd be out of your mind to miss this.
