Tonarunur - "Angle" (original mix) - (3:46) 105 BPM
The Secret Soul Society - "Ache All Over" (original mix) - (4:04) 100 BPM
Review: Volume 7 in the series but for once we can't really say "you should know what to expect by now" because what this compilation really goes to show is just what an eclectic and diverse camp the long-running Manchester label has become, with tracks on 'Paper Cuts #7' ranging from the near-ambient Balearica of Aniso Tropics' opener 'Apricot Memorex' to the self-explanatory synth-y stylings of La Guardia de la Luz's 'Trance Aleman de los 90s' via the uptempo strut of Jahn Solo's 'Disco'. So all we can really do is point you in the direction of some standout cuts, which for this reviewer would include D.S.D's luscious 'Just Can't Stop' and Benny Pitcher's 'Transatlantic Motion', which is like a little musical nod to the days when Paper comps were called 'Splinter'.

Neo Blues 2EXCLUSIVE
Rex-T - "Jewelry" (V's Electric Blues edit) - (5:08) 100 BPM
Review: For his latest trick, spoonerism-loving rework maestro V (AKA sometime funk-breaks producer Valique) has decided to offer up a second selection of "Neo Blues" scalpel works. He begins by delivering a chunky, rolling revision of Ann Feebles' rock-tinged gospel-funk classic "Beware", before chugging his way through a pitched-down revision of a weighty T-Rex glam-rock classic ("Jewelry"). This is followed by EP highlight "Holis", an inspired - and suitably epic - "Afro-blues" revision of one of Nina Simone's greatest moments, and the low-slung voodoo-house hypnotism of "Mississippi Lullalby (V's Rendition)". To finish with a. flourish, the Vehicle main man then adds some elastic new drums to Otis Redding's version of "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay".

Roofin - "Stand By Me!" (V's Simple edit) - (5:35) 103 BPM
Review: Trusty scalpel in hand and a bag of beefed-up beats at his side, Vehicle main man Valique returns with another quartet of "V's Edits". He hits the ground running with Clavinet-heavy opener "Little Love", a bouncy disco-house number full of flanged guitar parts, simmering orchestration and hot-to-trot female vocal snippets, before delivering a more stripped-back, bass-heavy number rich in sparkling piano riffs and celebratory old school flavours ("Do It"). "Sensation" is a seductive, steamy and occasionally sleazy re-make of a breathy mid-tempo disco workout, while "Stand By Me" sees him turn a much-loved laidback soul number into a slow-house head-nodder.

Review: Neo Blues 3 announces its arrival via our most trusted Vehicle label that's been a port of call for disco edits for the world over. Turning in another four-tracks here it's spearheaded by the uber-warm kick, woofing bass and melodic percussion sequences of "Sea-Line". Harking back to the days when artists like Eddie C and Tornado Wallace were dominating the slo-mo, chugging disco sound, "Condition" adds yet another beefy boost to a Ken Roger's classic, while funkier soul and blues jams from Kings of Survival make the cut alongside that all time cinematic classic by Rodriguez's ("Sugarman").

Massimo Vanoni - "Move Up" - (8:08) 100 BPM
Mista Shifta - "Cash Money" - (3:09) 101 BPM
Review: There's a reason that Midnight Riot's eponymous compilations frequently charge to the top of the Juno Download charts. Put simply, they never disappoint. This ninth installment sticks to the now tried-and-tested formula - house-friendly re-edits and originals from across the disco, boogie, soul and funk spectrum - but predictably hits the spot throughout. As usual, there's a bonus mix - this time put together by globe-trotting scalpel jockey Rayko - and tracks come from both label regulars ('80s Child, Ziggy Phunk, Chewy Funk) and an impressive array of new or unheralded talents. It's in the latter category that you'll find some of the most impressive fare - see Phil Jaimes deliciously Balearic "Nowhere To Hide" and Cosmocomics' kaleidoscopic synth-funk jam "Mary Jane" - though the standard remains pleasingly high throughout.

Too Late To Dream
13
Inner Story (Lone Saxon Street Rub) - (6:21) 108 BPM Hot
Review: Shades of Sound Recordings have turned to young French producer Harrington - a lover of deeply dreamy, emotive and nostalgic house music - for their latest release. He sets his stall out with title track 'Too Late To Dream', a gorgeously colourful and authentic tribute to late '80s Italian dream house, before Joe Morris joins the dots between Don Carlos and street soul on his accompanying remix. Breezier late '80s piano house flavours are the order of the day on 'Inner Story' and Lone Saxon's electro-break driven 'Street Rub', while 'Vision of Mind' is a tactile and smile-inducing slice of Italo-house excellence. Best of all, though is the slow-burn and ludicrously loved-up Akasha System rework of that track: a killer cut to end a genuinely superb EP.

Metamorphosis - (6:28) 107 BPM
Review: Dave Lee has described this epic album, his first under the lesser-known AC Soul Symphony alias, as not only a 'labour of love', but also a tribute to the soaring string sounds and musically expansive arrangements that marked out work by original 1970s disco acts such as the Salsoul Orchestra, MFSB and Love Unlimited. Predictably, Lee has delivered and then some, serving up a string of epic disco workouts that flit between sax-laden mid-tempo beauty ('Windy City Theme'), soaring Philly Soul revivalism ('The Philly Avengers', with its jammed-out, Billy Preston style electric piano licks), seductive slow-jams ('Music For Your Pleasure'), elongated invitations to hit the dancefloors ('I Want To See You Dance'), sparkling disco-funk ('AC Express'), Salsoul-esque outings ('Seneca Village') and tributes to disco greats ('The Talented Mr Adams', which doffs a cap to the great Patrick Adams).

How Green Was My Wallet - (2:04) 106 BPM
Lost In Logik - (4:02) 101 BPM
Review: For the latest missive on their "non-dancefloor"-focussed "Incarnations" offshoot, Running Back has turned to returning artist Feater, AKA Daniel Meuzard. The Vienna-based producer has delivered a seven-track set that counts as his sophomore album, following the release of admired full-length debut "Socialo Blanco" in 2019. Musically, "Money" is impressively diverse, flitting between kwaito-inspired, synth-laden dancefloor warmth (the jaunty ttle track), spaced-out ambient oddness ("How Green Was My Wallet", "Curves"), heady post-punk pop revivalism (the near-Balearic "Blood Moon"), percussion-heavy synthesizer soundscapes ("Lost In Logic"), Clavinet-sporting, White Isle-friendly wonders (standout "Vento") and clanking, modular-made electronica ("Big Zero").

Review: Bologna based legend Luca Trevisi aka LTJ Xperience has been spinning around Italy since the '80s so we were convinced he knew his stuff already, but this album is truly testament to his years and knowledge. He re-edits a bunch of classic soul jams spanning, funk soul, disco and rare groove on a collection which is pure fire and a worthy addition to any DJs arsenal. The smooth groove of "Slow Fire" is the kind of thing Psychemagik could have got to first, while "You Will Know" and "Black Machine" sample some of the very best in the form of Gypsy Kings and Prince, respectively. There's a lot to get through, but it's all killer, no filler!

Purple Disco Machine & Sophie & The Giants - "Hypnotized" - (3:15) 108 BPM
Wanna Feel Like A Lover (feat Ed Mac) - (4:50) 109 BPM
Review: Sweat It Out! bring us the deluxe edition of Purple Disco Machine's 2021 long-player 'Exotica', which now packs three bonus cuts. Starting with the latter, 'Twisted Mind' is a lively, uptempo slice of disco-pop, 'Rise' (featuring Tasita D'Mour) rocks a more club-friendly soulful/disco house vibe, while Sophie & The Giants collab finds us back in daytime Kiss FM territory. As for the album proper, it's fair to say that 'Exotica' finds the German stalwart making his bid for mainstream stardom - much of what's here is much closer to contemporary pop than it is to 70s disco or 90s disco-house. But then you knew that already.

Review: Going by the volume of tracks on show, it would be fair to say that Masterworks Music's "Bag of Tricks" is not a little handbag, but more like a Mary Poppins style bottomless carpetbag. The label's latest rummage through its seemingly endless contents has been a successful one, with the 20 showcased cuts including a wealth of fine fusions of disco, house, boogie, electro and 80s soul. It's uniformly dancefloor-focused, with highlights including the Afro-house/disco-tech fusion of JB Dizzy, the driving, spaced-out disco-house grooves of Mike Woods, the loose-limbed, off-the-wall edits of Chewy Rubs, the sweet disco-soul bounce of RocknRolla Soundsystem, the delay-laden synth sing-along styles of Rayko and the hot-to-trot brilliance of Downunder Disco.

Mechanical Body - (6:12) 102 BPM
Review: Lately Leeds' Deelicious has seen his loose and groovy tunes grace the likes of Sound Exhibitions and Disco Fruit. Here he rolls out five sizzling new bangers. The urgent slice of socially conscious funk, "Lonely Town Lonely Street", kicks things off, "Trust Me" incorporates housier filtered loops into the mix and the title track is celebratory slice of disco-pop with some ace bloc-rocking breaks and punk-funk bass work. Elsewhere we enter orbit with the melodramatic sci-fi boogie of "Mechanical Body" and "Change Your Mind" is an amazing example of early underground dance music reconfigured by a 21st century perspective.

Rolling With The Tiger - (5:01) 105 BPM
Review: In a world awash with endless re-edits from the "stick a 4/4 kick under it and go to the pub" school of thought, it's always nice to come across a producer who takes a slightly more original and inventive approach to plundering the back catalogues of others. Step up Stockholm native Ture Sjöberg, AKA Beatconductor, who here delivers an album-length EP packed with re-edits and mash-ups that do just that. Putting Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep' vocal on top of chunks of Survivor's 'Eye Of The Tiger', for instance, really shouldn't work on paper, but when coming out of your speakers it most certainly does! Elsewhere you'll hear bits of The Eurythmics (several times), Sister Sledge, Earth Wind & Fire, Yazoo, The O'Jays, Mariah Carey, Christopher Cross, Post Malone and more, all shaken AND stirred into something new and interesting... worth checking for sure.

Peacey & Rona Ray - "Playground" - (4:35) 100 BPM Hot

Review: Over the last few years, Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson has spent a fair amount of time mentoring Peacey, a young producer with oodles of talent. That much is proved by the rising star's expansive debut album, a superb 16-track set that combines sizzling colo cuts with a string of inspired collaborations. The Edinburgh-based artist sets his stall out via the luscious horn arrangements and immersive ambient electronics of 'Play It By Ear', before drifting between head-nodding R&B loveliness (Oveous hook-up 'Love In The Forest'), sensual and seductive, soul-flecked deep house ('Hold Me Back' with Clyde and Atjazz), mid-tempo boogie-soul ('Playground' with Rona Ray), dubby and dreamy downtempo grooves ('Last Night's Dream'), deep and techy, spoken word-sporting dancefloor workouts ('Culture Bandit' with Vanessa Hidary) and jazz-funk influenced excellence (LaRoye collab 'In The Distance').

Tony Disco - "Booty Call" (original mix) - (5:51) 108 BPM

Review: In the words of Paper Disco, episode six of their floor-friendly "Trash The Wax" series delivers "plenty of party pumping offerings". Predictably, proof of the set's club-ready status arrives via Hi-FI Sean's compilation opening remix of IPG v Hot Toddy's "Slow Motion Cowboy", which delivers a funk-fuelled riot of delay-laden guitars, funk rock attitude and sizzling dub disco grooves. Naturally, the rest of the collection is similarly strong. Highlights include a rare production outing from Bill Brewster (the throbbing, off-kilter Italo-disco him of "4 U Blue"), the Balearic Italo-disco bliss of Richard Norris's "Glow", the dreamy, arpeggio-driven nu-disco warmth of Kooky and Damoon's "Walk Back Into My Life" and Sheffield stalwart Solid State's deep, epic revision of "Remnants" by Speed For Lovers.

Review: Sultry warm disco sessions for the open air this season with this swift four-pack from Paper Disco combi Anoraak & Luxxury. "Fire Inside" swoons a summer disco vibe with Lauren Turk's breathy lead vocals - reminiscent of a certain Linda Clifford circa-79 or pop starlet Kylie (circa-99) - while look to Anoraak original "Up To You" for a percussive, cosmic and instrumental burner. Staccato guitars and drum machine sequences collide with the odd space pong and warehouse sized vocal processing in The Emperor Machine's remix, supported by a straight up free and easy 'Fire Side" instrumental with subtle chorus line. Hot hot hot.

Dorisburg - "Midi Trail" - (5:58) 107 BPM
Review: In 2003, amid a shifting landscape of closing record stores and evolving electronic music genres, Phonica Records emerged as a haven for dance and electronic music enthusiasts. Founded by Simon Rigg, Tom Relleen, and Heidi Van Den Amstel with backing from The Vinyl Factory - Phonica aimed to be a welcoming hub for all genres. Starting quietly, the shop gradually gained a strong reputation, fueled by the founders' ties to Koobla Records. Phonica thrived in its early years by championing emerging genres like electro house and minimal-micro house from labels like Kompakt and Perlon. In 2007, the Phonica record label was born, evolving into a platform for both staff and emerging talents, featuring early releases by now-established artists such as Peggy Gou and Four Tet. In 2023, celebrating its 20th anniversary, Phonica showcases its journey with 20 Years Of Phonica - a compilation boasting 18 exclusive tracks from established and rising artists across the label's diverse musical spectrum. Hot tips include tracks by Willow, Dorisburg, Ron Basejam, Roman Flugel and more!

One thing that the final decade of the 20th century did do well was dance music and here we get a selection of 36 more underground tracks from that time. Highlights include the sizzling nu-NRG of "To The Rhythm" by Divine Dance Experience, the bizarre, randy trance of "I'm A Sex Maniac" by Dick, the stabby vogue jam "Cauz I'm Learn" by Old Skool and the deep early Red Zone (aka David Morales) remix of System 3 Request "Desafinado".

Review: Despite not being a name on everyone's lips, Belgium is, actually pretty freakin' awesome. They've given us lots of cool clothes, food and architecture, but in terms of music? Unbelievable. The previous two volumes of The Sounds Sound Of Belgium were mind-blowing excursions into uber stylish electronic music from disco to EBM to techno. Now we have Volume Three. We 56 examples of awesomeness here to get through but highlights include the punky creep-funk of "Poison" by The Weathermen, the staccato electro of "The Voice" by Telex and the techno on steroids mayhem of "Horsepower" by Ravesignal. This album is gold!

Where Do We Go From Here? (Andres remix) - (7:01) 108 BPM
Review: Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra are Far Out's in-house Brazilian disco group comprised of Joe Davis with long-time affiliated producers David Brinkworth and Daniel "Venom" Maunick. 4hero main man Dego's "2000 Black Remix" of "Where Do We Go From Here?" is on form as always; this is modern, soulful deep-funk the way it's meant to be. Londoner Ben Hauke's rendition isn't too bad either giving the track a slightly urban, low slung soul makeover that'd reminiscent of Theo Parrish's finer moments. Speaking of Detroit; Andres appears too, giving the track his typical Midas touch on this deep house take that's so worth hearing.
