Review: If you're reading this then you will know that Instinct is one of the UK's powerhouse garage labels. Run by Burnski aka James Burnham it deals in serious tackle for rude boys and nasty girls. The drums hit hard, the reversed bassline burn goose old school cool and there gun finger salutes come thick and fast throughout this EP from Mance. 'Checkpoint' opens with the dusty drum shuffles and bulbous bass, then 'The Going Is Rough' is a little more soulful and sweet with its rolling basslines and silky pads. 'Beat 93' closes down with a seriously OG garage sound that takes you back to the mid-90s.

XT / Woozy Remixes
Sully - "XT" (Basic Rhythm remix) - (3:52) 166 BPM Hot
Basic Rhythm - "Woozy" (Sully remix) - (3:15) 168 BPM
Review: A cheeky game of swapsie: earlier this year Basic Rhythm and Sully went side-for-side on this lovely Full Cycle-flavoured double A from Basic Rhythm's label Musique Nocturne. Now time for the second half as the guys pass parts rebuild each other's monsters. Both succeed in a beautiful ways; BR adds Krust Warhead style push and development of Sully's swinging 'XT' while Basic Rhythm's 'Woozy' is chiselled into a menacing stepper by Sully. Two absolutely exceptional remixes of two already stonking originals. Essential.

Review: Twisted Individual's Grid collective collide for another adventure in neck support as the label's flagship Head Nodders series hits its 15th volume. The results always speak for themselves as dons young and old congregate with some fantastic fodder. Juiceman's 'Brutal Nature' sets the levels before Hexa proceeds to bite our heads off with the savage 'Rezura' remix. Elsewhere Milo goes super aggy and cosmic on 'Go Back', Module goes pure sci-fi on 'Weightless' and C-Du brings the EP to a mystical dreamy close with the trippy 'Planck Energy'. This gets the nod from us!

Review: Teezy slaps us hard with this bouncy four pack on Boujee B. Always revealing different shades to his style, 'Click Clack' sees him double down on the classic bassline dancefloor vibe where the focus is on the lower end of the riffs. Highlights galore on here but the big winner is 'Forfeit' with its retro 8-bit spiralling vibe. Game over. Elsewhere 'Rave Request' is giving us the 1UP of our lives and 'Bread Rack' is a bonus secret level thanks to its surreal sample sense of mischief. Teezy's flexing right here.

Axxiove - (6:33) 123 BPM
Review: Opolopo and Alafia join forces on "Axxanxxan/Axxiove," a two-track EP bursting with infectious energy on Canopy Records. This release isn't your average house offering. It's a full-fledged adventure that blends captivating percussion with vibrant disco and Afro influences. Both tracks, "Axxanxxan" and "Axxiove," weave intricate layers of percussion that lock listeners in with a tribal feel. But this EP goes beyond just rhythm. "Axxanxxan," takes the tropical route. Think metallic basslines swirling alongside chopped guitar riffs and washes of synths. It's a heady concoction that evokes a vibrant, sun-drenched dance floor. "Axxiove" prioritizes driving drums, creating a hypnotic pulse that's nothing short of scorching. Subtle cosmic elements weave through the track, adding a touch of otherworldly intrigue. A must-have for disco devotees alike, offering two distinct gems that will keep any party moving.

Review: Hey Cabrera! heats things up with "Italo Void," a scorching EP that blends electro disco, Italo disco, and house music into a perfect summer cocktail. Crisp drums and rhythmic handclaps form the base for infectious melodies that shimmer and pulsate throughout the title track. A remix by Lauer adds a touch of analog warmth with piano flourishes, infusing the song with a late-night, romantic atmosphere. Then "Forelskelse" takes us on a journey to Scandinavia. Here, disco and house influences collide to form an uplifting anthem brimming with emotional energy. David Bay's remix of "Forelskelse" is a masterclass in restraint. He strips back the original, letting the core melody and instrumentation shine through, resulting in a captivating and nuanced take. "Italo Void" is a superbly crafted EP that captures the essence of summer.

Review: South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was, from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

Review: Heavyweight sounds from Jinx! He's back at the Straight Up controls with four late night bangers to keep you sweating. Each one hitting with that loose, raw sense of bassline funk, 'Can't Breathe' sets the pace with a big hooky old school Serum style riff while 'Dance All Night' hits with more of a futuristic funk. Elsewhere 'In The Streets' goes heavy on the drums while 'Mash Up The Dance' closes the EP on a dubby introspective heads-down groove. Keep on dancing.

Review: Next up on Perfect NL, an absolute stonker of a drop from the one and only Arkham Sound, joining forces with TMSV to deliver a mind-numbing dip into the subby pool. We open up with TMSV's remix of 'Heat Mandatory', a digital masterpiece in gritty synth lines and warbling LFO design, followed by the faster paced, jungle-influenced pad textures and eski licks of 'Elseworlds' alongside 'Hostile Universe', which again slams together heavily reese-driven arrangement for maximum impact. From here, more synthetic wizardry as the electrifying drives and metallic percussive slaps of 'Codec' turn the pressure towards a more dubstep-inspired field, followed by square-wave driven depths of the original 'Heat's Mandatory'. Top work!

Review: There've been some fine sounds emerging from Scruniversal's sonic laboratories of late and this latest six-track missive from La Riff is a case in point. The EP opens with the atmospheric 'Jazz Reflections' - just imagine you're putting away bourbon on the rocks with John Shaft in a 124th Street dive bar - then moves on through the dense, aquatic and soundscape-y 'L'Amour', the moody, hypnotic groove of the sleaze-tastic 'Flash Funk', the avant-garde soul-jazz of the title track, the absolute stone-cold be303bop killer that is 'Acid At The Piano Bar' and then, finally, the blissed-out, post-excess anthem-in-waiting 'Dark Matter'. Varied, rewarding and supremely checkable.

Review: Pilot is one of the many labels in the orbit of the unstoppable production force that is Burnski aka garage innovator Instinct. It deals in proper club tackle from a wide range of artists and here it is Hatori Hanso that offers up the brilliance. 'Low Rider' opens with a very familiar hook and some deep, deep half sung, half spoken vocal, before nimble live bass, brass and crispy breakbeats bring the party. 'Cherry On The Cake' is a lively house cut littered with James Brown samples and screwy synths that keep the pressure on. 'Don't Know Why?' closes proceedings in a more cool and breezy tech house mood with sci-fi designs, to complete a set of varied but reliable frug-starters.

Review: The Deepshakerz and Turntables Night Fever join forces on "Oh Phunk!," a potent injection of funk-fueled house music courtesy of Fool's Paradise. The track wastes no time establishing its groove. A powerful, pulsating bassline takes center stage, laying the foundation for the funky mayhem to unfold. Disco influences are sprinkled throughout "Oh Phunk!," with filtered disco strings adding a touch of nostalgic flair. However, the production feels fresh and modern, avoiding a cheesy throwback vibe. A classic house with a modern edge!

Review: Slump Recordings launches into 2024 with Baby Rollén's potent 4-track EP, delivering a punch of tech-driven rollers infused with an unmistakable 90s authenticity. Brothers Will and Max, known as Duowe, maintain their stronghold on the club scene, going OG house soundscapes, take the funk-driven deepness of "Monster Island" for example. "Bits N Bobs" keeps a subtle hint of disco by drives it deeper into the techier realm, with some straight up vibraphone vibes in "Xyloroll". And of course, the B2 (if we were talking vinyl) is this EP's deepest cut and most explicitly house. Deep.

Review: Alemao, who describes his sound as "deep disco, indie dance, percussion", delivers an EP that packs three cuts all coming from that place where disco, progressive house and techno collide. 'Akyre' sets the ball rolling in suitably BIG, peaktime-friendly style with its dramatic synths and surging prog bassline. 'Spatzi' is more straight-up Italo in style and features some cool synth sweeps straight out of a sci-fi allegory about the Cold War, while the title track takes us on a moody, slow-building excursion to the heart of a cavernous warehouse dancefloor, with Rigopalar's deeper remix of 'Akyre' completing the set.

Review: Nude Disco's previous collaboration with Curtis Chip, 2023's 'High Rollers', was a bona fide club hit, so it's no surprise to find the cut - a sweet and sunny slab of nu-disco/boogie house fusion - kicking off the pair's new mini-album. It is followed by title track 'Never Be Lonely', a synthesiser-powered slab of peak-time instrumental nu-disco rich in glassy-eyed vocal samples and squelchy bass, and a trio of rather good bonus cuts. Check first the slo-mo disco sweetness of 'Diana's House', a groove-focused riff on Diana Ross classic 'It's My House', before admiring the tooled-up '80s soul bounce of 'Hey Scotty' and the deliciously deep, funky and dreamy 'Lumineaux'.

Review: Belarusian producer Four Walls is back - this time around he finds himself on the new Ultraworld Records imprint from DJ Craft. This one kicks off with the lush prog house and silky synth arps of 'Mind Charger' which soon takes you to the stars. 'Metamorphosis' is a more raw-edged and acid-laced techno stomper for peak time action and 'Summer Nights' is a bubbling, elastic tapestry of new age overtones, thudding kicks and trance-tinged pads. A remix by Toronto-based Pletnev adds another dimension to this club-ready EP.
