Review: Not content with putting up with a winter that's outstaying its welcome, Innerground have begun to piece together a work collective that shows off the sundrenched atmospherics of the Brazilian drum and bass scene. Headed up by DJ Marky and S.P.Y, the first track is of course "Yellow Shoes" but with a twist; adding that classic Calibre warmth to drum and bass' ultimate summer anthem tones down the glare, making it much more accessible to those of us bleached by a thousand months of rain and sleet. "Summer Soul" is far less accommodating however, and as the title suggests, it's a Submorphics-flavoured roll through the bassy summer days and soulful vocals that have become a staple of the Brazilian scene. A perfect excuse to ramp up the heating and crack open some Brahmas.

Review: Simona Calvini is one of Italy's best-known DJs and on Blind, proves that she's fast becoming one of that country's most promising producers. Eschewing straight, linear grooves, this release is based on off-kilter rhythms and stripped back arrangements. On the title track, Calvini uses this approach as a basis for deep chord washes, whispered vocals and hypnotic bleeps. The mood is far less serene on "Look Deep", where murderous bass drops and eerie noises prevail and on "Toy Boy", where a tearing low end is combined with steely electro drums and a stepping rhythm to create a sound that alternates between icy and menacing. But Calvini is most impressive when exploring pure rhythms and the rolling, dubbed out "Awake" is the release's highlight.

Review: New school garage will always put a smile on our faces, especially when it is approached with as much enthusiasm as both DJ Pencil and The Cut Up Boys always seem to bring to the table. Taking the title 'Flute Of Babylon', we see an amalgamation of classic 2-step vocal chops, party-starting drum sweeps and gnarly bass manipulation unleashed in one fabulous ball of fun, followed closely by four potent additional remixes. Firstly, Richard Wright gives the track a more squeaky feel, focussing on choppy drums and high ended bass notation, followed by both the tripletted drum stings of Rodent's overhaul and the junglist marvels of the Dark Dean & Hankinson rethink. Finally, Dan Speed unveils a sweeping sizzle of a remix to close up, focussing on high energy 4x4 drum rolls and some tasty bass action to match.

Review: We have another wicked gift here, courtesy of the STEP2 collective, who unload a seriously spicy box of remixes onto the world, welcoming back some of the most exciting names in UKG right now. We begin with two reworks of originals from DJ Pencil & The Cut Up Boyz, with Maarz firstly rebuilding 'Fiesta In The Market' into a chord-laden slap, alongside Shadow Of Light's more oldschool rethink of 'Come With It'. Next up, new school heavyweight BWK Project gets to work on shifting DJ LIX's 'Rinse Out' into a new school 4x4 bubbler, followed by DJ LIX himself overhauling Dan Speed's 'Tell Me That You Love Me' into a sub-busting emotive roller. Finally, Dan Speed takes a turn on the remix wheel as DJ LIX's 'Rinse Out' is given an LFO-driven rearrange, closing off this project with some euphoric 4x4 energy.

Review: The latest volume in Local Talk's occasional reworks series comes from label regular Crackazat, who duly serves up a fine collection of mostly fresh remixes of back catalogue tracks. There's naturally much to admire throughout, from the rubbery electrofunk bass, drowsy piano riffs and cut-up vocal samples of the producer's revision of Art of Tones classic "The Rainbow Song" and a sparkling, riff-driven peak-time tweak of HNNY's loved-up "Tears", to wonderfully retro-futurist reworks of Deymare's "1990" and "Unconditional" by Terrence Parker, a re-imagining that's the epitome of feelgood deep house. Throw in a string of slightly jazzier revisions and you have a rock solid collection of cuts.

Review: French label Beaumonde specialise in reissuing lost or forgotten global music recordings, mostly from the 70s and 80s. This new album-length collection, though, finds them handing over the keys to their archives to some of today's hottest up-and-coming producers - the fruits of whose labours range from Jet Boot Jack's remix of Acayouman's 'Take You Down', which should work on any floor where disco is played, to Bully Boy & TeeTwo Mariani's much more reverential Refix of Beliz's 'Mazunga'. The scales tilt quite heavily, it has to be said, in the latter direction: as such, this is an album that will appeal mostly to fans of Balearic, cosmic and global music styles, but that's worth checking by open-minded disco spinners of all persuasions.

Review: Fans of Mark Williams may prefer the original versions on this release, but there is no doubt that this remix package scores highly on diversity. The remixes of "Change of Heart" range from the heavy, rolling tribal techno and whooshing effects of DJ Cristao & Toni Alvarez's take to the pulsing bass and chord stabs of Giacomo Stallone's version and Jesus Soblechero's tracky, stripped back interpretation. "The Low Talker" is also available in a variety of reshapes: from Josh Love's disco'n'strings sampling tribal pounder to Miche & Mirzinho's Ben Sims-inspired Hardgroove take and the grandiose swagger of Ortin Cam's epic take - indeed there is no doubt that there is something for everyone in the techno audience.

Review: Fledgling label Funk Fusion have quickly hit the ground running - pushing their nu-funk agenda with joyous abandon. From the Sesame Street vibes of their promo pic, it's clear from the start that this label is all about having fun and their latest mash-up compilation "Fused Funk Vol 02" delivers it big time. There's 12 tough party tracks packed on here including the electro-hip-house of "Get Your Boogie On", the bleepy jump-up funk of "Hold On, I'm Comin" and the smooth retro closer "Danceflaw".

Review: Originally released in 2015 on wax but now finally available on digital, Future Times expanded the sound and vision of the label with part three in their compilation series. It's an all star cast on here, with the compilation opening with the dynamic killer "Junk Funk" by DC newcomer OV then Israel's finest Juju & Jordash with "Soggy Bottom" next where they get their hypnotic piano throb on. Label boss Max D's "Octopus" follows with an improvised, kinetic bang. Elsewhere label stalwarts Beautiful Swimmers serve up "Primo", a thick chunk of industrial pop for the freaks and of course BRSTL boss Shanti Celeste and her monster cut "Strung Up", a savage tune for the deejays that mixes a bit of her home town with classic electro.

Review: Its festival operation may have enjoyed its most successful year so far, but Dekmantel remains true to its underground roots on this look back at 2019. There's the off beat disco of Freedom Engine, Mathew Jonson's new project, as well as left of centre curveballs from Lamellen and Epsilove. That said, the Dutch collective also understand what's needed to rock a dance floor. Fittingly, 2019 includes the electronic disco of Jex Opolis "Earth Boy" and Betonkust & Palmbomen II's acrid acid workout "Underground Dance Floor", which both appeared on the label earlier this year- as well as the timeless icy techno classic of Terrace's "Bewitched".

As a label, AC Slater's outfit has developed into one of the most forward thinking projects currently rolling out across the bass music expanse and this compilation showcases just how far they have moved forward. The tracklisting contains a monstrous host, featuring the likes of Flava D, Shift K3y, Jack Beats, Cause & Affect and many more heavy hitters. For us the immediate standouts have to come from Jay Robinson firstly, who's acidic roller 'The Return' hits home heavily, alongside Phlegmatic Dogs, who's classic 'Cuatrocats' adds major weight to the selection. Review: It's difficult to envisage a Breakbeat Paradise drop that doesn't feature a serious tonne of quality, with this latest collection of 13 powerful creations making up the 'Boots Of Paradise' collection. The project takes a very central theme of reigniting hip hop vocals with dancefloor-ready reworks, from the classic Biggie sampling of Crash Party's 'The Juice' to the old school slicing of 'Ice Cream' from LROY and Aliens In Denmark's 'Chatty Tramp'. Even with this pretty solid central theme, the project has a lot of variation involved, from the sharpened drum punches and modernized synth slides of 'Brick Bounce' by Towlie DJ, to the more 4x4 influenced grooves of Morlack's 'Fall In Love With Me'. Our standout highlight for the whole drop would have to be Pecoe's 'Champion', which balances crunchy drums with well designed vocal sampling, which also makes it a perfect final entry.

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his brilliant "Sunny Bigler" single, Leon Sweet has been installed as the man behind the decks for the second volume of Paper Disco's Trash The Wax series. Sweet's two-hour DJ mix is excellent, of course, but it's the unmixed tracks - a combination of unheard bits and recent Paper gems - that make this compilation essential. Expect a range of re-edits and original tracks that variously touch on nu-disco, Italo, boogie and, of course, house. Highlights are plentiful, and include a trippy slow acid version of The Balearic Beat Boy's "Waiting For Me", a typically rubbery mid-80s soul re-cit from 80s Child, and a killer, filter-heavy rework of Melba Moore by Neil Diablo.

Review: Synth-bothering indie-popsters Friendly Fires are the latest contributors to the uniformly excellent Late Night Tales series, and they seem desperate to prove just how diverse their tastes are. Oh, and their underground credentials. So, we get fuzzy stoner disco (Renee), curious French electro-disco oddness (Space), shirts-off end of night goodness (the much-played but still ace "Like An Eagle" by Dennis Parker), krautrock-inspired indie pop (Stereolab, Cocteau Twins), classic US garage (Iron Galaxy), future anthems (SBTRKT), dream-pop (Junior Boys, Lauren Halo), folksy musings (Grouper), and even a dash of Olivia Newton-John (the decidedly Balearic "Love Song"). While a cynic may raise a surprised eyebrow at some of the selections, there's no denying their quality.

Review: Few DJs have more experience of providing the soundtrack to Balearic sunsets than Chris Coco and Pete Gooding. It's perhaps fitting, then, that they've compiled and mixed this second installment of the Gecko Beach Club (based on Formentera, Ibiza's little brother) mix series. This bulging digital package contains a mix from each (Coco's is defiantly hazy and downtempo, Gooding's packed full of tactile deep house), plus their selections in unmixed form. There are some real gems to be found, from the sun-kissed simplicity of Seu Jorge and Almaz's unfussy cover of "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", and Blackbelt Andersen's spine-tingling "Mann Pa Mars", to the wide-eyed Balearic house goodness of Gooding's own "Malibu", and the bassy strut of Waifs & Strays' "Remedy".

Review: Denver label Plush Recordings proudly present a decidedly plump retrospective of their output from the past two years. Across the count'em 36 tracks some familiar names are naturally present displaying the various slants on the Plush output - be it gloriously liquid funk or half step hip hop embellishments to more atmospheric strands of the drum and bass. Commencing in style with the jazzy textures of Contract Killers, the subsequent and exhaustive selection contains highlights almost too numerous to pick out and thus our best advice is to let you dig in and find your own favourites!

Review: Arriving just in time for the summer season, Hot Digits delivers a compilation that is tailor made to soundtrack lazy, hazy days. Even Funkier's "Feel So Good Inside" is an irresistible, funk-fuelled disco groove, while Ben Jamin's "Handle" inhabits a similar space. Soaked in wailing guitar and soulful vocals, it's a wonderfully infectious track. Both Andy Buchan and P-Sol raise the tempo with string-filled disco workouts, while Fray Bentos' "Danced To Death" offers a more electronic take on this sound. The compilation does veer towards house on occasion - most impressively with the subtle drum builds and chord progressions on Down Under Disco's "On My Mind". In the main though, Year Nine impresses most when it draws on disco and funk influences, such as the raucous party jam that is label owner Fingerman's collaboration with Chewy Rubs, "Block Party Bad Boy".

Review: Six years on from launching the It's A Summer Groove series, Joey Negro returns with a fifth selection of sunshine-friendly tracks from the Z Records vaults. While much of the label's output - soulful, accessible, funky and heavily influenced by disco, funk and boogie - could be described as "summery", there's something particularly bright and breezy about the 21 tracks gathered together here. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the smooth disco-soul goodness of the Reflex's recent remix of the Sunburst Band's "The Secret Life of Us", and the terrace-friendly piano house of Shur-I-Kan's rework of Zo & Erro & Phonte, to the vibraphone-laden boogie-house goodness of Rainbow Connection and Taka Boom's "Surrender".

Review: Mark Knight's label brings together some of the sounds that were showcased over the course of the ADE. Basement Jaxx kick start the compilation with the stomping disco house of "Never Say Never", while Harry Romero shows that he's not just a US house head. Working with Doorly, he drops "The Truth", a tough techno track, led by heavy claps. The techno influence lingers on Maceo Plex's "Conjure Superstar", which features an unusual combination of rave sirens and sublime, 808 State-style synths. As is the case in the wider electronic world, this reinvention of the past is in abundance on Amsterdam 2014 and apart from Plex's track, the most impressive contribution is Dosem's "Chase the Link", which sounds like a particularly dark version of vintage Lil Louis.

Review: One of the most successfully prolific bootleg dealers on the nu-funk scene, Actual Sounds celebrate half a decade of dancefloor hell raising with this epic 40-track compendium that showcases their most talented artists and most bolshy of booties. If you've not had the pleasure of making the label's acquaintance yet, now is most certainly the time. From slamming up-tempo rip-ups such as Actual Phantom's insane "Fat Eric" to slinkier, sleazier jams such as Funk In A Can's killer electro blend of Luniz "I Got 5 On It" Actual Sounds understand all members of the dancefloor from moody rudeboy to a laser-loving raver. Booties don't come with much more distinction than this; here's to another five years.

Review: What more can we possibly say about nu-disco producer Valique and his two-year bootleg/edit/mash-up blitzkreig that we haven't already said? Listening back over these 31 offerings it becomes apparent that this is simply the soundtrack to one seriously mighty party. Review: Not content with serving up regular doses of ear-pleasing nu-disco, the Future Disco crew has decided to start sound-tracking days spent lounging on the beach. Somewhat predictably, this second Beach Life selection is packed with seriously steamy, sun-kissed grooves. While this epic digital package does contain two (un-credited) DJ mixes, the real joy is the expansive - not to mention eclectic - selection of DJ-friendly, unmixed tracks. Check, for example, the sun-down, jazz-funk influenced bliss of Folamour's "L'homme Loup", the head-nodding lounge warmth of Snacks' "Daydream", the gentle Balearic nu-disco of Sirs, the lo-fi deep house haziness of DJ Boring and COEO, and the sand-in-the-shoes shuffle of Eli Escobar's delicious remix of Kraak and Smaak's "U R Freak". Throw in a swathe of tasty, laidback but floor-friendly deep house jams and you have a solid collection of serious summer jams.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Toolroom's "Poolside Ibiza" compilation strand, namely groovy nu-disco, house and laidback Balearic beats inspired by afternoons spent lounging by the water in stonking White Isle heat. Naturally, there are plenty of gems to be found amongst the 40 unmixed tunes selected by chosen DJs Moullinex and Xinobi, from their own collaborative post-punk/dub number "X Marks The Spot", to the slick '80s synth-pop dreaminess of Tensnake's fine remix of Xinobi's "Far Away Place" and the drowsy, Morricone-influenced soundscape weirdness of Simple Symmetry's remix of Moscoman's "I Ran". Throw in some seriously good cuts from Felipe Gordon, Donald Dust, Pin Up Club and Meera (whose carnival-ready boogie jam "Fine Without You" stands out), and you have a fine collection of summery cuts.
