Review: With a colossal 25 tracks, Deep House Extravaganza Volume 6 certainly delivers on its promise. It's an epic collection of snugly deep house nuggets that should tickle the fancy of anyone who likes their house warm, comforting and touched with the faintest whiff of sweat-drenched late night soul. There are forays into chunkier, more bumpin' territory (Junior Gee's familiar "Southside Hustle", the percussive thump of Caytaz and Patz "Watercat"), some pleasing Afro flavour (Qmusse's "Amasikko") and even a dash of pacey tech-house (Tan Atalar's pleasing "April"). The overall feel, though, is smooth, groovy and floor-friendly - and it delivers that with aplomb.

Review: While Dessous may have originally laboured under the shadow of being "Steve Bug's other label", in recent times the imprint has really come into its own as an outlet for high quality deep house. This expansive 23-track collection gathers together some of Dessous' best moments from the last couple of years, throwing in a smattering of unreleased cuts from label stalwarts Vincenzo, Tigerskin and Phonique for good measure. Review: This compilation spans a range of sounds, but is testament to the fact that despite its diversity, Affin has always been a byword for quality underground dance music. From the stepping, understated "Minus One" by Truncate to the woodwind-led house of "Stalking You" by James Hunter and the gorgeous, jazzy, filtered groove of Jamal Moulay's "Le Push", 100 does a lot to showcase the label's penchant for deep dance music. Joachim Spieth's "Sensual" boasts hypnotic Basic Channel-style chords, but the beats are tougher and denser. Reggy Van Oers's "Centipede" veers further down this chord-driven, dubby techno path and Affin also celebrates the harder end of techno with the utilitarian, Berghain-influenced linear sound of Chemie & Ian Kran's "Nucleated Thought".

There is a wonderful flow across both volumes, and a nostalgic quality coming from classic sounding, melody rich tracks (many of which are SoundLifts own). Review: Joe Mount of lovable scuzz pop outfit Metronomy mans the latest volume in the long running Late Night Tales, a series who always seem to get the best results out of an unexpected cast of participants (Belle & Sebastien, MGMT, Trentemoeller and Midlake being recent inductees) It's hard not to get sucked in from the sugar sweet opening of Outkast's "Prototype", which is the first of several tracks that demonstrates Mount has a penchant for slow bumping R n B and outsider hiphop with Tweet, Sa Ra and a Dr Octagon classic also appearing. A typically far reaching approach to genres applies here with the cosmic jazz of Chic Corea happily mingling with Autechre and Two Lone Swordsmen and American synth oddities Geneva Jacuzzi and Appaloosa mingling for attention with The Alan Parsons Project and Herman Dune. The de-rigueur cover version arrives with a Metronomy rendition of Jean-Michel Jarre's"Hypnose" whilst Paul Morley ends the selection with a spoken word piece.

Review: Arriving just in time for the summer season, Hot Digits delivers a compilation that is tailor made to soundtrack lazy, hazy days. Even Funkier's "Feel So Good Inside" is an irresistible, funk-fuelled disco groove, while Ben Jamin's "Handle" inhabits a similar space. Soaked in wailing guitar and soulful vocals, it's a wonderfully infectious track. Both Andy Buchan and P-Sol raise the tempo with string-filled disco workouts, while Fray Bentos' "Danced To Death" offers a more electronic take on this sound. The compilation does veer towards house on occasion - most impressively with the subtle drum builds and chord progressions on Down Under Disco's "On My Mind". In the main though, Year Nine impresses most when it draws on disco and funk influences, such as the raucous party jam that is label owner Fingerman's collaboration with Chewy Rubs, "Block Party Bad Boy".

Review: While it might be tricky in these open-minded times for Scuba to shatter preconceptions the way that he did with his Sub:Stance mix a few years ago, this compilation should be seen really as a celebration of the man himself as a DJ. After launching with a decidedly minimalist approach, the mix meanders between pacey techno, bluesy broken beat and rolling dubstep tempos. At times the flow feels unsteady, but then it just rings true that he put this mix together for himself. Without a dancefloor to look after, who knows where many of our favourite DJs might take us?

Review: The ADE has become one of the most important dates in the international electronic music diary, and if this compilation is anything to go on, it taps into the current musical climate. Sampler contains more than its fair share of loppy house and tribal workouts - contributions from Gabriel Ben and Lee Picton's insane whooshing stand out - but it's the interpretations of classic sounds that really impress the most. Greg Fenton's "Revolver" is a chugging techno groove, its heavy beats underscoring a massive air raid siren. Mark Holmes's dub remix of Tuunee's "I'll be (right there)" is even more intense, with widescreen chords and a massive Resse-style bassline combining for an epic slice of dramatic techno.

Review: Factory Records has always been a source of fascination for music historians and reissue merchants, though their focus has usually been on the label's indie credentials. Here crate-digging experts Strut take a different approach, shining a light on the label's contribution to dancefloor culture in the post-punk years. Largely steering clear of the biggest anthems, FAC Dance offers a good mix of familiar tunes ("Love Tempo", "Confusion", "Cold As Ice" etc), long-forgotten gems (see the alt electro-funk of A Certain Ratio and Marcel King's E'd-up Hacienda anthem "Reach For Love") and genuine curiosities (check The Duratti Column's dubbed-out proto Balearica, the piano-laden Latino vibes of Quando Quango's "Genius" and Biting Tongues oddball post-punk Afro-fusion). A fitting tribute to a truly visionary label.

Review: Following hot on the heels of the Lindstrom reissue, the Late Night Tales digital remasters series continues with a typically eclectic and atmospheric selection from Four Tet man Kieran Hebden. Like many other Late Night Tales selectors before and since, Hebden used the opportunity to cram in many weird and wonderful choices as possible, digging deep into his impressively left-of-centre record collection. So, we get American classical minimalism from Terry Riley, a smattering of spooky jazz numbers, the psychedelic folk-rock of Manfred Mann and Fairpoint Convention, off-kilter experimental hip-hop from Gravediggaz and Madvillain, and some clicky electronica from Manitoba. Predictably, the included DJ mix joins the dots in fine style.

Review: Second time around for Hans-Peter Lindstrom's decidedly Balearic, prog rock-tinged Late Night Tales selection, which first saw the light of day back in 2007. This time round, it's been given a gloss of new paint in the form of a sparkling digital remaster. While this is all well and good, the selling point remains the Norwegian producer's excellent, left-of-centre selections. There's another chance to check his own cover of Vangelis' "Let It Happen", classic Balearica from Fearn Kinney and Carly Simon, acapella action from Todd Lundgren, freestyle ambient jazz-funk from George Duke, a slew of forgotten prog rock faves and a brilliant dub track from Oslo mates Prins Thomas and Todd Terje ("Reinbagan").

Review: Consisting of original productions by Solee, remixes for close colleagues and a few tracks by associated artists, Night Shift goes through a number of styles. "Oasis" and "Aragorn" are based on tough house beats and lead into trancey climaxes thanks to Solee's eerie synths, while "Dubtale" is a lighter, disco house affair. At the other end of the spectrum, Solee delivers an oppressive bass version of Goodspeed 's "Stage Whisper". But if there is a common theme, it's a love of trancey melodies and epic builds - audible on Solee's neon trance meets slinky acid version of Nick Warren's "Flowers" and John Tejada's woozy chord building reshape of Solee's "Legends".

Review: Committed German crate-digger Tobias Kirmayer apparently spent two years tracking down the 22 rare funk and soul records showcased on Movements 4, the latest volume in his acclaimed series. It shows. The heavy, fuzzy, long-lost tracks that appear here will be new to all but the most committed crate diggers. Predictably, Kirmayer has unearthed some real bangers. Check the powerful horns on Preston Love's "Cissy Popcorn", the reggae-influenced bump of DM Movements' "Ooo Wee Baby", the bluesy extortions of Old Metropolitan Band's "Summertime" or the upbeat madness of Ricky Williams' "Discotheque Soul"; all offer blistering, energy-sapping grooves in spades.

Review: With the series of 12" s garnering ever more praise among dubstep purists, Keysound capitalise on the appreciation of the LHF collective and issue forth a whole album's worth of material under the appropriate title Keepers Of The Light. The reason the crew is heralded is not because of some stout insistence on making endless monochrome 2003 style dubstep, but because the vitality the genre poses at its best is evident throughout their output. There's a heavy focus on Indian classical samples in many of the tracks which harks back to Dusk & Blackdown's Margins Music, but really the whopping 26 track selection is pushing a brand of freshness in a half-step context which is all their own.

So prolific, in fact, that this latest label 'best of' features a whopping 20 tracks, each of which originally came out in the last 18 months. Those who've followed the label will know what to expect - comfy, melodic deep house, springy electronic house and the occasional fuzzy tech-house groover. Review: At 19 tracks deep, this collection of old and new Nufrequency remixes takes rather a long time to trawl through. Stick with it, though, as there are some real gems contained within. Deep house fans, in particular, are in for a treat, with Motor City Drum Ensemble, Charles Webster, Tony Lionni and Mark E (whose slinky, midtempo house rub of "Fallen Hero" is a highlight) all delivering killer reworks. Review: The new I:Cube album is a rapid-fire collection of tracks woven together (there's a clue in that title you know) which takes the manner of a live set. The idea is essentially to bring the dance music album back to its raison d'etre, the dancefloor. To keep things interesting, the tracks are whipped through with a wonderful irreverence, as cheeky radio interludes and impulsive switch-ups keep things from staying too formulaic. Rather than some vision of a smooth, linear DJ set, this album instead takes the stance of creating pleasure through disorientation. Mr Chaix is a master of alluring grooves, and he uses that gift to really mess with your head when he changes tack, as between the edgy bleeps of "Y.O.U.R.O.C.K." and the light-hearted disco stomper "Get The Fever". Those surprise moves keep you engaged through all 23 tracks of this joyous beast. Chaix's lack of pretension is one of his greatest strengths; the I:Cube way is a direct and satisfying one. At no point is it cheesy or hackneyed, but it never tries to be too clever for its own good. With a live feel to match that immediacy, the "M" Megamix is a triumphant statement of what a dance music album should feel like. It might not be a comprehensive answer, but it certainly puts paid to all those "collection of singles" efforts out there.

Review: Go-go has always been one of American dance music's most overlooked genres. Given its roots lie in Washington DC, rather than music metropolises such as New York, Detroit or Chicago, that's perhaps unsurprising. This collection from Joey Negro offers a good starting point for those unfamiliar with the style, showcasing the work of scene stalwarts like Chuck Brown and a string of lesser-known names. It also impressively tracks the development of the sound, from a regional variant of funk to a an electro and hip-hop inspired crossover style in the early 1980s. Even if you've got a passing interest in go-go, it's worth a gander; as usual, Lee has unearthed some brilliant unheralded gems.

Review: Teklife Vol 1 represents the first release for footwork trailblazer DJ Rashad's new Lit City Trax imprint, created in collaboration with DJ Spinn and associate J-Cush, and a label which promises to be the definitive label for Chicago's well established footwork scene. At a massive 20 tracks this album is a meaty proposition, and it's testament to Rashad's talent that the album is entirely free of filler. Showing the producer's talent for swelling low end and threadbare percussion, album highlights include his excellent DJ Spinn collaboration "We Trippy Mane" with nods to Juicy J, the analogue mayhem of "She Gonna Go", the manic 303 and 808 assault of "Da Life" and the juxtaposition of smooth Rhodes chords, horn samples and furious percussive rattle on "Kush Ain't Loud".

Review: Jalapeno bring us their latest V/A collection rounding up the cream of the label's recent releases. Review: Kevlar Beas release some of the best compilations around, partly because they have a large contingent of affiliated artists to draw upon but mostly just because the curation team over there is top-notch. The aptly named Strength in Numbers features a load of acs from Quaa Rush to DJ Direkt, the former of which is responsible for 'Vecran', which packs a great, old-school and funky drum line and bouncy, soulful bass nodes which warp and wobble through a really cool arrangement. Danny Anger nails it with the soul-infused jungle vibes of 'Tallies Side Step', and this release in general combines loads of different pallettes to great effect. Fantastic.

Review: Frankfurt-based imprint Connaisseur drop the third annual Grand Cru compilation, bulging with goodies from the deeper end of tech and minimal house. Grand Cru - a term no doubt already known to the wine drinkers among you - refers to an elegant bottle or vineyard. And 2010 is proving to be a fine vintage; from the glitchy beat and ethereal vocals on Tom Demac's "Sky Swatches", to the meandering bassline of Franklin De Costa's "Futureboy" and "Jericho Horns" by label stalwart Afrilounge, which sounds like a wonderfully dirty afterhours version of Jesse Rose's "Touch My Horn". Review: Having invigorated the breakbeat scene in his native Spain, Seville's Digital Base now sees his first full-length album drop on iBreaks, ready to take on the whole world. Oldies like "Turn Me Out" and "Get On Dance" get included along with a whole range of new jams and some essential remixes too. After a long build-up, opener "Decibellum" immediately provides a storming start - a real masterclass in how to juggle a variety of beats and breaks into an energetic and dazzling mix. "Right There" follows up shortly after and sets the real vibe for the album - hard and dirty breakbeat but balanced with plenty of melody - in this case via a round-the-houses cover version of Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now". Included with the album are a set of remixes of DB tunes new and old, and some DB remixes of others (such as his truly standout treatment of DJ Mutiny's "Dreams Come True"). Names like Dekoy, Rex, 4Cuba and Break The Box all turn in blinders, but it shouldn't distract from giving Digital Base his props on dropping such a well-crafted and unrelentingly banging debut.

Review: Wonder Stories' founder Aimes (real name Aman Ellis) has been responsible for many of the label's most potent singles to date, so it seems fitting that he's delivered the imprint's first full-length excursion. As debut albums go, Let's Melt is something of an epic, with 19 unmixed tracks and a bonus DJ mix that stitches it together into one seamless journey. That's no criticism though, because the quality threshold remains high throughout. It's an album rich in analogue style synth sounds, rubbery disco bass, warning electronics and punchy, unfussy beats, with Ellis' cannily blurring the boundaries between nu-disco, deep house, angular acid, neo-Italo, Afro-electro, ambient, spacey jack tracks, off-kilter soundscapes and much more besides.

Review: Tonbe's music has spanned a range of styles from Balearica to boogie, but when he calls his latest long-playing offering 'Postive Funk' you kinda know what to expect, don't you? Thankfully the titular promise is one on which he more than delivers, with the album striking a nice balance between raw, 70s-sounding funkers like 'Funkstar' and 'Dig It', and more 80s- or pop-flavoured nuggets such as 'Ain't Nothing Wrong' or 'Live My Life'. Highlights for yours truly include '15th Street' (home to some extremely cool Hammond licks) as well as 'Another Bite', which takes some downright liberties with a Queen classic.

Review: With 24 tracks to choose from, there's no faulting the value for money offered by this latest collection from Italy's Sound Exhibitions camp, which features multiple contributions from label regulars C Da Afro, DJ Moy and Vito Lalinga. 'Nu disco', in this instance, tends to refer to tracks that faithfully reproduce 70s stylings - you won't find much here in the way of Italo-inspired synth workouts, for instance - but there's the odd excursion into housier/more electronic territory, such as on the Afro Acid Dub of Lalinga's 'Hard Core', while soul lovers will enjoy cuts like Goodge's 'Step Forward'.

This is a monster album curated by Aries and Kelvin 373, who have taken tracks both old and new to form a banging compilation. Bou nails it on 'Music Takes Me Higher', a rustic revisit to classic jungle sounds; Aries and Nicky Blackmarket roll things out in a tight way on 'Champion'; and Chimpo slams the brakes on 'DidDieDoThat'. We don't know the answer to that, but we do know this is fat. Big ups.

Review: Overview are without a doubt one of the biggest success stories of recent years and 2020 has proved to be their biggest yet, with a slew of fantastic releases across their roster of artists. Pretty much that entire crew is represented here and the tracks cover their 2 year history, from early tunes like breakout hit 'Around Me' to brand spanking new cuts like 'Framed' by Klinical and Waeys. Waeys has been an important part of the Overview story and his tune 'Who You Are' with Hadley was one of the first steps in that journey, a ridiculously dirty techy roller with an infectious bounce and a progression that will certainly get your gurn on. Since then, they've released a string of fundraising compilations featuring collaborations between the choir and DJs and producers across the world. This compilation showcases the series' greatest dancefloor hits to date, offering up percussive, bouncy and life-affirming gems that fuse elements of deep house, tech-house and Afro-house with organic African percussion and the choir's distinctive, ear-catching vocals. Review: It's time to lock up your daughters as Fetish drops a collection of harder-edged techno. AG-KW drops the industrial stomp of "Phasen" and Brad Lee's "Visions In Shadow" sounds like mid-90s Lost/Cosmic broken beat tribalism jacked up on angel dust. That's not to suggest that "Our Fetish" is a senselessly banging compilation. Indeed, many of the tracks are much weightier and more intense than much faster tracks and veteran producer Kai Randy Michel's mixture of bleak minimalism and searing acid on "Labyrinth" is a case in point. However, if you are seeking something less abrasive, then "Fetish" also delivers, with Mattias Fridell dropping the hypnotic metallic groove of "Permanent Disorder".

Review: Wow is the word, as Paper bring us a 'best of' collection honouring Tongan producer Soane Filitonga, who died in 2014. It opens with a serviceable but unexceptional cover of Cherelle & O'Neal's 'Saturday Love', setting the tone for a set that is packed with contemporary funk/disco grooves, with nods to Latin and bruk beat on cuts like 'Tropical Snowstorm' and 'Boavida'. But there is a lot more going on here than simple pastiche/homage - there's the energetic, rolling jazz-house of the excellent 'Guana Bara', there's Raw Silk covered inna slo-mo, lo-fi hi-hop style ('Secret Weapon'), there's Hassanah Iroegbu-sung ballad 'Runaway' (think 'Des'ree does folk-tinged Balearica'), and so it goes on...

Review: The joy of the digital download editions of the DJ Kicks series is not so much the included DJ mix - which, of course, is invariably excellent - but the accompanying full-length, DJ friendly tracks gathered by that edition's selector, in this case Elevate Berlin record store owner (and fine producer) Cinthie Christl. Her mostly club-friendly selections are little less than superb, moving from driving, organ-and-bass-rich U.S-style house (Terrence Parker, Niles Cooper, Sandil, her own exclusive 'Organ (DJ Kicks)') and life-affirming piano-house (Ruff Stuff), to deep two-step (Camion Bazar), slamming techno-funk (Anil Aras), dusty techno (Adriyano), deep breakbeat wooziness (Ben Hauke) and deep, dreamy acid jack ('Anna Wall'). In other words, it's a blindingly good selection - and Cinthie's DJ mix is wildly entertaining, too.

Review: Rod Modell is synonymous with introspective techno transmissions and on Soundfields, he slips seductively into abstract composition. Most of the tracks here are only a few minutes long, but it is to Modell's credit that he makes each dreamy sequence segue seamlessly into the next one. Framed against a glitchy, static backdrop, Modell teases out jazzy signatures on "Lavender"; the sound of a forest full of animals waking at dawn on "Whispering Pines" and swirling dub techno on "Aerosphere". Soundfields flows unhurriedly and fluently from start to finish, but it reaches a suitable crescendo on the woozy textures of "Barcelona".

Review: Throughout his long career, Swedish producer Andreas Saag has flitted between deep house and nu-jazz, crafting a melodic, musically rich and soul-flecked trademark sound. He's a good choice, then, to compile and mix a collection of Z Records' deeper moments. There's much to admire on this unmixed version (Saag's mix is included as a bonus cut), from the flowing keys and fluid grooves of the Swede's own remix of The Sunburst Band v Atjazz's "When The Lights Meet The Sky", to the string-laden beauty of Andre Lodeman's rework of Akabu's "Another World". Review: US compilation kings Straight Up! rep the glitch scene once again. Their fifth collection in this series, it's business as usual as they explore every corner of the globe for the most exciting, creative sounds of the genre. Naturally they've nailed it as we're bombarded with raw creativity. Highlights include the lush emotional west coast funk synths of Au5 & Fractal's "Subvert", the psychedelic acid bubbles of Mizchief's savage dub-twisted "Hitman", the euphoric synth jet streams of Virtu's "Reyes" and the more experimental, tightly edited vocal cuts and insane reverse bass techniques on Left Side Dear's "Grapefruit Incident". 25 tracks in total, there's no better representation of contemporary glitches, Straight Up have delivered big time.

Review: A new mix from perennial party faves Soul Clap is always a cause for celebration, but there's something extra-special about this particular exercise in dancefloor nostalgia. Nice 'N' Ripe Allstars sees them revisit the bulging back catalogue of Grant Nelson's Nice 'N' Ripe label, an imprint that has tracked the rise, fall and subsequent rebirth of UK garage since its' birth in 1993. Soul Clap's mix - an action-packed 30-track affair featuring some of their own edits and remixes of classic cuts - does a great job in showcasing the best the label has to offer, flitting between early US garage style jams, loose soulful house, sturdy two-step, bass-heavy speed garage and the kind of long-lost jams which should be bitten by today's retro-minded house producers. In doing so, it offers an impeccable history lesson.
