Dark Matter - (6:35) 122 BPM
Review: There've been some fine sounds emerging from Scruniversal's sonic laboratories of late and this latest six-track missive from La Riff is a case in point. The EP opens with the atmospheric 'Jazz Reflections' - just imagine you're putting away bourbon on the rocks with John Shaft in a 124th Street dive bar - then moves on through the dense, aquatic and soundscape-y 'L'Amour', the moody, hypnotic groove of the sleaze-tastic 'Flash Funk', the avant-garde soul-jazz of the title track, the absolute stone-cold be303bop killer that is 'Acid At The Piano Bar' and then, finally, the blissed-out, post-excess anthem-in-waiting 'Dark Matter'. Varied, rewarding and supremely checkable.

Review: Slump Recordings launches into 2024 with Baby Rollén's potent 4-track EP, delivering a punch of tech-driven rollers infused with an unmistakable 90s authenticity. Brothers Will and Max, known as Duowe, maintain their stronghold on the club scene, going OG house soundscapes, take the funk-driven deepness of "Monster Island" for example. "Bits N Bobs" keeps a subtle hint of disco by drives it deeper into the techier realm, with some straight up vibraphone vibes in "Xyloroll". And of course, the B2 (if we were talking vinyl) is this EP's deepest cut and most explicitly house. Deep.

Fusion - (5:21) 128 BPM
Review: Chicago house producer Tai Davis - who made his name with a series of 'Classic Chicago House Remakes' EPs over a decade ago - pays homage to the Windy City's musical heritage with four tracks that prove there's plenty of life in the old acid dog yet! Up first is 'Brain Dead', which ain't much more than a throbbing, pulsating groove underpinning some serious cut-off and resonance abuse. 'Whop' rocks slightly more straight-up, harder-driving 4/4s and gets bleepier and bleepier as it goes on, 'That Acid' brings the tripped-out, Adonis-like vibes and finally 'Fusion' merges acid with Larry Heard-style deepness to play us out.

Review: Gunnter made his debut on Rutilance Recordings, an imprint he co-founded with Dj Steaw back in 2016, though since then he's only appeared occasionally on the label. In fact, this EP is only his second full outing on the imprint, and his first was released five years ago. It's a genuinely fine EP all told, with Gunnter delivering a combination of fresh ideas and nostalgic, '90s deep house sounds. For proof, check the acid bass-propelled warmth of glassy-eyed opener 'Loose Leaves', the more low-slung and action-packed 'Get Closer', and the mid-90s Strictly Rhythm dubs flex of 'Base Camp'. Elsewhere, 'Smooth' lives up to its name via spacey pads and tactile grooves, while 'Jersey City' doffs a cap to what British DJs of the early 2000s would have called 'trad garage'.

Review: Leinad's "Electric City," originally released in 1997 and recently reissued on Kabinett 48 Recordings with bonus tracks, is a delightful journey through the heart of deep house. This remastered version offers a chance to experience, or revisit, the sound that captivated dancefloors in the late 90s. The album opens with "In Trouble," setting the mood with a laid-back groove and warm pads. Tracks like "Freak Tonight" and "Pretty Young Thing" showcase Leinad's talent for crafting infectious melodies that lodge themselves in your head. These tracks are perfect for dancefloors or simply cruising down the street with the windows down. While the album leans heavily on classic deep house elements, it throws in some surprises. "Back 2 The 80'S" is a synth-heavy homage to the previous decade, complete with playful video game-inspired melodies. "Let's Snip!" offers a brief intermission with a chopped-up vocal sample that adds a touch of playfulness to the mix. For those who remember the 90s house scene, "Electric City" is a delightful trip down memory lane.

Review: "Let's Work" by Rulers Of The Deep, Ricky Inch, and Mr. V is a collaborative effort that brings together Estonian house veterans and an American vocal legend on the Soulfuric Deep label. The producer duo Rulers Of The Deep lay down a foundation of rich, soulful house music with hints of afro and tech influences. Ricky Inch, another Estonian house mainstay, adds a touch of local flavor to the international collaboration while legendary Mr. V brings his instantly recognizable vocals to the mix, perfectly complementing the groove with his signature house music flow.

Review: The Ltd W/lbl imprint excels at delivering expansive EPs packed to the rafters with floor-friendly deep house cuts, as recent releases from Benjamin Long and Alberto Castellana emphatically proved. Here the shadowy imprint turns to a familiar favourite, Eloi, who last appeared on the label two years ago. The vibe here is deep, sensual, warming and jazzy, with twinkling electric piano motifs, dusty samples and hissing cymbals riding tactile grooves. It's a formula that guarantees success every time - at least on this excellent release - with our picks including atmospheric opener 'The Great Delusion', the horn-spattered wonder of 'Foundation's End', and the Moodymann-esque excellence of 'It Gets Better'.

Review: Since ditching his Marquis Hawkes alias some years back, long-serving house and techno producer Mark Hawkins has gone back to his roots, delivering no-nonsense, hype-free workouts for the likes of Aus Music, Repetitive Rhythm Research and Unknown To The Unknown. Here he makes his bow on X-Masters with a predictably solid four-tracker. Title track 'Time & Space' is particularly potent, with Hawkins layering hazy female vocal snippets and warming electric piano chords atop sweaty deep house drums and a genuinely superb bassline. This classic deep house vibe continues on the even deeper, dreamier and more alluring 'Together', before Hawkins opts for enveloping chords, fluctuating wobble bass and locked-in beats on 'Illusion'. Closer 'Lopez', meanwhile, is a fine fusion of deep house and cultured acid house sounds.

Review: Two very strong house cutz here from the French scene stalwart, coming on Lausanne, Switzerland-based label Black Pattern. 'High N Risin' loops up a diva vocal snip, crisp drums and Jersey-style organs in a style that recalls the excellent Serious Grooves imprint of the 90s, while the DJ Merci & The Checkup Heavy Bottom Remix takes things a notch deeper and adds live-sounding hand percussion. '2 The F', meanwhile, is dancefloor-driven deep house at its absolute funkin' best, while the Dexter Troy Remix gives it little extra disco shimmy. It's originals over remixes for yours truly this time out, but whichever rubs you opt for, this is a superb lil' package.

Review: IULY.B's debut album, Dimensions, on Switzerland's Adam's Bite label brings rise to the Romanian artist's evolution at large, allowing for IULY.B's knowledge and influences from a decade's time in the underground scene to spwan out of the rabbit hole. Across eleven tracks, IULY.B explores a spectrum of sounds, from the ethereal beachside ambiance of "Seagulls Passing By" to the gritty bass stabs and tripped-out vocals of "Bump". With a sequenced blend of raw dance floor energy and hypnotic subtlety, other numbers like "Aurora" and "Ronnie's Squat" blur the lines between house and techno, allowing a cut like "Variations" to delves into the roots of dub techno with swirling echoes and hypnotic chimes.

Drawing from 80s new wave influences, the track inspires deep house and indietronica elements to merge, resulting in a progressive dance experience. Review: microCastle's latest release welcomes back Spanish artist Adrian Roman for his second major blip on the label, titled This Is What I Was For A Moment. With a career trajectory marked by inventive compositions and club-effective tracks, Roman's name has certaily risen through the ranks since discovery in 2021. Across six tracks, Roman's craftsmanship shines, from the slow-burning depth of "Le Sabbat" to the groove-centric energy of "Customized Reality". Tracks like "Faces of Belmez" push further with corrugated bleeps and cataclysmic rhythms, while "TAGDI" stands out with contemplative synths and guttural vocals, crafting a slow-building dystopian romance. Closing with the muscular grooves of "Fear Track", Roman completes a diverse collection of expressions that conjures an immersive and challenging sonic backdrop, marking another compelling chapter in his fresh and fruitful journey thus far.

His inaugural 5-track EP, accompanied by a remix from Harry Wills, introduces listeners to the vivid universe of Calamero, a fictional city brought to life through Disset's melody making. With bass lines as sturdy foundations, drums reverberating through urban streets, and notes weaving together like inhabitants of this imaginary metropolis, each track offers a sonic glimpse into different facets of Calamero. Disset pulls up his retrofuturism, merging modern electronic machinery with samples of traditional instruments, tribal percussion, and ambient sounds, resulting in a a city filled with romance, nostalgia and innovation.

Review: D.Ko Records co-owner Flabaire (real name Ralph Marauni) makes his bow on Rawax offshoot Housewax, bringing with him a quintet of quality cuts. He sets his stall out on opener 'Inwards', joining the dots between classic deep house, melody-rich lusciousness and early 2000s micro-house, before opting for a deeper, warmer and more bumping vibe on 'Osez'. 'Suspended' is ultra-deep, dubbed-out and hypnotic in the best possible why, while 'Revelation' is a soundscape deep house treat and 'Ugotme' is an Andres-esque riff on Detroit deep house underpinned by deep sub-bass. In other words, it's a fine EP of well made, grown-up house treats.

Right Place (Unclepasha remix) - (5:32) 117 BPM
Need You (Unclepasha remix) - (5:57) 118 BPM Hot
Review: Two recent cuts from Russian disco don Alexander Chebankov, better known as Sunner Soul, get handed over to fellow St Petersburg native Unclepasha - whose musical CV dates back to the early 00s - for the remix treatment. His take on 'Right Place', which first appeared on last month's 'Something Good' EP, tones down the boogie and jazz-funk influences of the original and ends up deeper and smoother as a result. Conversely, he's kept the boogie stylings of 'Need You' (taken from February's 'Da Funk' EP) intact and arguably even emphasised them, in a dubbed-out remix that gets distinctly Levan/Peech Boys-esque in places.

Review: Belgian producer Gratts teams up with Eleanor 'Mr' Beale on a laidback release that sits somewhere between deep house, Balearica, nu-jazz and trip-hop. Gently lolloping hand percussion with an Afro feel sets the pace from the outset, with Beale's jazzual vocal only emerging around the 1:20 mark. Add some lingering chords and you've got a track that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a mid-90s 'Rebirth Of The Cool' compilation. An accompanying remix from French stalwart Gilb'r pushes the track more firmly towards jazz-house, while the package is completed by a self-explanatory Bonus Drum Tool.

Review: As the matter-or-fact title makes clear, this expansive affair brings together a wealth of tracks from two of Luv Shack's most prolific and consistent artists, Jakobin and ROCTIV. The former steps up first with a trio of tracks. Of these, it's opener 'Drawan' - a deliciously trippy and mind-mangling slab of psychedelic house rich in TB-303 acid bass, fizzing electronics and ghostly chords - that most impresses, though IDM-goes-breakbeat bubbler 'Skulpt' and the deep and trippy 'Octagonal Tribe' are also excellent. ROCTIV drops four tracks, flitting between bass-heavy, acid-flecked breakbeat ('Frenezy', 'Living Art'), re-born early 90s progressive house/nu-disco fusion ('No More Room In Hell') and sub-heavy psychedelic sleaziness ('The Confidence').

Review: Ostensibly a response to techno being 'in such a sorry and predictable state', Full Pupp's latest compilation goes off in a number of wonderfully captivating tangents. Label owner Prins Thomas' "Mere Apokalypso" is a tripped-out groove, while his take on Synk's "Tool Mix" is an acid-laced chugger. In contrast, JaddajaddaPlay's "Bird No Bird" goes down a percussive route. Despite the title, techno does make an appearance. Blackbelt Engh Rhythm Combo's "Frydenlyn" is a rolling tribal affair, while trance influences bubble to the surface on Christian Engh's dubbed out "Khonsu" and Karolinski's high-paced, melodic "Slutt A Mase Eg Har Ikkje Spelt Pa Ei Veke".

The Berlin-based producer has more than proved his credentials of late, so it's no surprise to find that the two tracks on show are both high-quality. First up is title track 'Deep Waves', a gorgeously warming, tactile and sunny slab of nostalgic Italo-house revivalism piled high with jazzy bass, colourful chords and sparkling piano motifs. Review: Since making his debut way back in 2022, Franck Roger has served up a lot of exceptionally good deep, soulful and spiritual house. In its' original mix form (track six), 'Enchanted', featuring Shawn Chappelle, is another high-grade treat - a shuffling, soft-focus vocal house number rich in warming chords, Osunlade-esque spiritual house percussion, meandering guitar solos and chunky bass. The accompanying remix package is naturally very strong too. Fred Everything delivers two takes: a subtly jazz, boogie synth-sporting vocal revision built around bouncy Afro-house beats, and a deliciously dreamy, weightier and more bassline-driven 'Dub'. DJ Spinna dips the tempo slightly on his more relaxed and laidback deep house versions (vocal and instrumental takes are both included), while Demarkus Lewis opts for a more immersive, thickset vibe on his full vocal interpretation.

The six tracks on show on volume one undoubtedly hit this brief, with highlights including the sinewy, ultra-deep, sunrise house wooziness of Apparel Wax's '0091A', the vibraphone-laden, early St Germain-esque wonder of 'Soul Haze' by Sek, the jazzy and dubby lusciousness of Sune's 'En Saga', and Girls of the Internet's deep, dusty and chunky remix of 'Everytime' by Jason Heresco, where vintage female vocal snippets, tactile electric piano chords and a jazzy bassline all catch the ear.

Review: Gee Labe won plenty of plaudits for his Toy Tonics label debut, 'Metamorphosis', when the EP dropped back in October 2023. Hopes are naturally high then for the Barcelona-based Venezuelan's speedy sequel. She hits the ground running with Mabreezee hook-up 'Monkeys', where squelchy synth-bass, dreamy chords and even more soulful vocals wrap around an extra-percussive mid-tempo house groove. New York combo Musclecars join forces with Kamaal to deliver vocal and instrumental takes that successfully re-cast the track as a slab of broken beat/Italian dream house fusion. Completing a fine package is bonus cut 'The Fourth', where Lane rushes off on a 1989 style piano-sporting, breakbeat-driven house tip.

Review: House music chameleon Atjazz is back on West London's Slip 'N' Slide label, this time revisiting a beloved classic. Back in the day, Kevin Hedge & Josh Milan (known as Black Rascals) ruled the scene with their soulful house anthems, including "So In Love" featuring Cassio Ware. Three decades after it soundtracked countless club nights, the track gets the Atjazz treatment. His official remix retains the original's smooth vibe while injecting his signature sound. Expect a fusion of the song's soulful core with jazzy flourishes and modern production techniques, creating a fresh and captivating soundscape. The release also includes the Galaxy Aart remix, offering a more experimental twist on Atjazz's already cerebral take.

Review: Franck Roger's "Cosmic Tree EP" marks a captivating journey into the realms of deep house, where Parisian finesse meets the legendary aura of NYC's Nu Groove Records. As an esteemed DJ, crate digger, and label maestro of Real Tone Records, Roger's prowess in crafting immersive sonic landscapes is on full display across these four tracks. The EP opens with "Part Of My Soul," a collaborative effort with Detroit luminary Rimarkable. Here, Roger's signature loop-based approach intertwines seamlessly with Rimarkable's vocals, evoking a cool downtown vibe that feels both timeless and fresh. From there, Roger takes the reins solo, delving into the depths of deep club weight with "The Music" and unleashing the percussive groove of "Radik'Hall." However, it's "Cosmic Funk" that truly steals the spotlight, serving as a sublime homage to the genre. Synthy basslines, vocoder rhythms, and ethereal trebles converge in hypnotic harmony, culminating in a transcendent listening experience.

Review: Under the DJ Psychiatre alias, Sylvain Creton is fast becoming a rising star of the current French electronic underground. Further proof of his credentials arrives via 'Glad To Be Back', a four-tracker based on fusing his love of vintage progressive house sounds and the hands-in-the-air rush of piano house. He first gets 'Lost In The New', adding hands-aloft piano stabs, MK style organ motifs and colourful chords to a crispy rhythm track, before opting for a breezier and even more rushing vibe on the similarly kaleidoscopic 'Riding Zone'. 'We Make Records' sees Creton wrap echoing vocal snippets, woozy ambient chords, acid-influenced electronics and jaunty pianos around a shuffling deep house groove, while 'Thinks We Do' is a bubbly, acid-flecked slab of breakbeat house joy.

Review: Leeds label Shades of Sound seem obsessed with serving up melodious and colourful music tailor-made for sunny days and humid dancing at dusk. They're at it again on 'Disco Archipalego', a bold and entertaining label debut courtesy of Sydney producer Arp Decco. There three typically sparkling and kaleidoscopic original tracks on display: the mid-tempo, synth strings-laden Balearic piano house-meets-Reverso 68 cheeriness of 'Disco Archipalego', the synth solo sporting piano house-with-acid-bass flex of 'New Life', and the gorgeous 'Breeze', whose snaking sax solos, joyous melodious and chunky TB-303 bassline create a suitably loved-up mood. 'Tech Support' turn 'New Life' into an acid-flecked, sunrise-ready breakbeat house gem, before Joe Morris rounds off a fine EP by giving 'Breeze' a nostalgic, Balearic house-goes-breakbeat re-fix.

Review: Since establishing the imprint during the first COVID-19 lockdown, Lauren Ritter has used the Rift Vision imprint as a vehicle for her progressively more impressive productions. This two-tracker is the first of two EPs she has slated for release on the label in 2024. There are two original productions to savour, each backed by an accompanying remix. 'Antigone' is a fine slice of dreamy, immersive, sub-heavy deep house tailor-made for summer sunrises and sunsets, which is later given a snappier, faster and jauntier spin by Zone+. Ritter continues to mine the more melodious, colourful and loved-up end of the dancefloor spectrum on 'Sarus'. Powel provides the remix, re-framing the track as a spacey, druggy and gently acid-flcked tech-house roller.

Review: Shabi's DOBRO jams continue with Happy Jams that are undeniably exactly that, much what these times need. Pushing a classic house tip with good vibes pads, sample selections, loops and tricks, Shabi gets '90s old school and French touch in his kicking title track. "Let's Talk Dancin'" offers some similar tricks, holding down a groove with a vocal hook to boot, while "I Feel It Comin'" does something some more soul and R&B. "Disco Party" throws down some classic percussion and a walking bassline while "C'mon Let's Fly" may as well be Fred Falke back in the mix. French house style!

Review: Running Back boss Gerd Janson has been a fan of Raphael Schon for some time. Last year, he reissued the German producer's 2021 breakthrough hit, 'Fiesta 2000', on the Misfit Melodies offshoot. Now he's gone further still, offering up an expansive EP of brand-new music by the producer, all of which is shot through with references to dance music's storied past. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the sparkling positivity of the 303 bass-powered 'Bearhit', the riff-happy retro-futurist smoothness of 'Do You Like That' - whose breakdowns and drops are suitably excitable - and the kaleidoscopic, near techno-tempo joy explosion that is 'Distant City Transport'. The more nu-disco and maximal house influenced 'Sometimes I Miss You' is also superb.

Together they serve up two tracks that draw heavily on 70s Afro-funk for inspiration, with 'Faith' coming with a slightly mellower remix courtesy of Medlar & Dele Sosimi while 'San Diago' gets two rerubs, with Rahaan giving the track a slightly jazzier, more leftfield makeover while Prins Thomas's Diskomix transforms it into a slab of percussive, slo-mo disco. Any/all should go down well on floors where Afro-oriented beats are in demand.

Review: NYC combo 79.5 are, like Midnight Magic and Escort before them, a live outfit whose trademark sound and output is shaped by the rich musical history of the city they call home. That superb sound was outlined on last year's eponymous debut album, tracks from which appear in remixed form on this must-check EP. There are two takes on previous single 'Feel Like Dancin': an extended deep house take by Malik Hendricks with added Afro-house percussion, and an impressive low-tempo chugger titled the 'Generalisation Dub'. 'B.D.F.Q' also comes in two contrasting variations: the spacey electro-meets-ghetto-house flex of the Jubilee Remix, and an extended version of FSQ's Midnight Magic style neo-disco interpretation. A percussive and joyous J Kriv house revision of 'Our Hearts Didn't Go That Way' completes a fine package.

This time round, it comes in lightly expanded form, with 'Test 3' appearing in two forms: the blissful ambient acid style original mix (a wonderful mid 1990s throwback) and a previously unheard vocal version, which not only adds a drowsy, effects-laden lead vocal, but also a hypnotic, soft focus groove. Elsewhere, 'Test 7' is a fine slab of otherworldly deep house/acid house fusion, while 'Test 2' is a more out-there, mind-altering ambient acid excursion.

In fact, 'Details' marks her first solo material for almost three years, and her first release of any kind since last year's collaborative mini album with 45Diboss, 'Supernova'. 'Details' is a typically colourful and synth-heavy affair, with her own vocals and glistening electro-pop melodies riding bouncy beats (think Afrobeats-meets-pitched-down Afro-house and you're close) and a deliciously warped, sub-heavy bassline. The remix package is naturally strong, boasting fine revisions from BokBok (energetic and upbeat, with nods to peak-time bass music and broken beat), Girl Unit (thrusting, wobble bass-propelled techno) and Aryu Jassica (percussively propulsive tribal house revivalism).

Title track 'Spiritual Basslines' - which is available in 'Club Mix' and 'Extended Mix' variations - follows a similar sonic template to the Amsterdam stalwart's most recent releases, adding classic deep house sounds to the kind of skippy, loose-limbed groove most often found on late '90s US garage releases. Highlights elsewhere across the EP include the vintage Nu Groove-influenced excellence of 'Eternity', the dub house meets-nu-disco shuffle of 'Golf Cart Joyride', and the deliciously deep, dusty and dubby shuffle of 'Olympiad'.

Review: Professor Oz's latest release on Rezpektiva isn't your average album. It's a treasure trove of unearthed gems, a 8 tracks compilation showcasing the French producer's visionary work from 1986 to 1995. Entitled "The Lost Experiments," these previously unreleased tracks feel remarkably fresh despite their age. Remastered from the original DAT tapes, the album brims with infectious energy. Professor Oz, a self-proclaimed "sonic wizard," weaves dusty breakbeats and proto-techno grooves into a heady concoction. Tribal drumming and swirling, trance-like synths add a touch of the exotic, while the album's progressive song structures and pulsating acid basslines ensure it remains firmly rooted in dancefloor territory. These tracks prove that even decades later, Oz's forward-thinking sound and genre-bending production still feel innovative and exciting.

Review: James Denny may not get the media coverage of some of his contemporaries, but his track record - which includes singles on REKIDS, Hot Creations and Crosstown Rebels - is exemplary. It makes sense, then, that Shall Not Fade boss Kieran Williams has added him to the label's ever-expanding roster. Opener 'Dans La Nuit', a charging and sample-rich slab of peak-time house joy rich in jazzy guitar licks, bouncy beats and 'Knights of the Jaguar' sty;e synth strings, is the pick of a very strong bunch, but the other two tracks on show are excellent too. King Crowney collaboration 'Dance With Me' is a sizzling and humid, percussion-and-trumpet-heavy slab of Latin house hedonism, while 'Anni 80' sees him create hands-aloft gold out of unfussy house beats and synth-heavy samples from a long-forgotten 1980s treat.

Review: Since the release of his soul, R&B and downtempo-inspired 'Birdhouse' album in 2022, Jamie 'Jimpster' Odell has pivoted back to the dancefloor, serving up a sequence of deep house-fired singles. He continues that run on his first outing of 2024. Opener 'You're My Ecstasy' sets the tone, with the Freerange founder adding echoing soulful vocal snippets to a typically luxurious deep house workout laden with skippy drums, heady bass and dreamy chords. Title track 'The Passion', featuring King Crowney, comes in two variations: an immersive, woozy and piano-laden original mix that's both dancefloor-ready and musically expansive, and a more fluid, jaunty and upbeat Atjazz remix in the veteran producer's trademark style. Basically, it's another must-check EP from one of British deep house's most reliable producers.

A trio of top-notch dancefloor dubs - interpretations of other cuts across the collection - completes a fine set.

Get Wild - 15th Anniversary
Get Wild (Sharam 1.5 Club remix) - (5:03) 127 BPM Hot
Get Wild - (7:12) 128 BPM
Review: Marking 15 years since it was first released, Yoshitoshi reissues Sharam's classic "Get Wild". The track has stood the test of time. Mario Vazquez' soulful vocals resonate as much as they did when the tune originally appeared, while Sharam's driving electronic rhythm and dramatic breaks have lost none of their dramatic impact. The only change from the original release is Sharam's '1.5 Club' remix of "Get Wild". Putting the vocals to the foreground, this new interpretation is focused on dense tribal drums and a visceral bass, ensuring that the evergreen track will continue to resonate with a new generation of house music lovers.
