Liondub International

Liondub International, born on the foundations of original reggae music, primarily hones in on roaring jungle and drum and bass but occasionally swerves into 140 bpm and dancehall territories. The label was founded by DJs and producers DJ Liondub and Marcus Visionary in 2008. Over the years Liondub International operated from Brooklyn, Toronto, London and Kingston (Jamaica) but is now run solely by Liondub in New York City. The label joins the dots between sub-labels Blacklion Movements, Liondub Street Series, Liondub-ODT Muzik and Liondub45. Liondub International has seen releases from artists including: Bladerunner, DJ Hybrid, Serial Killaz, Aries, Bou, Macky Gee, Euphonique, Jayline, Sub Killaz and Riko Dan.

Review: One half of Serial Killaz, Vital Elements reflects over 20 years in the game with this powerful five tracker that shows him exploring, pushing and developing his style. Pick any flavour you might know him for and it's on this EP in all its glory: 'That Thing' brings the ravey rushes, 'Delinquent' is all about the flabby old wobble, 'Whine Up Ya Body' adds a splash of daytime dancehall delight and 'Shelter From The Storm' is all about those epic emotions and that goosebumping fusion. Need some absolute carnage? Look no further than the title track '20 Years'. Wig burning!

Review: Lion Dub have reached a decade of activity. A decade! To put it in perspective, if someone was born the year Liondub started, they're about to enter high school/secondary school. It's a crazy achievement and one matched by the craziness of the music they have on offer to celebrate, a four-part journey through their past, present and future. This instalment is all about their past and it's exemplified best by Serum's VIP of Sound The Alarm, a Liondub classic, which Serum has flipped into a characteristically badboy, stabbing little roller. The vocals float above in a haze of reggae smoke, whilst the beat pulsates below. Awesome stuff.

Review: Liondub are celebrating a decade of existence and they're doing a three-part compilation series covering the past, present and future of the label. By definition, then, these series' feature plenty of talent from all across the spectrum and time period of the genre. One of our favourite of the 26 cuts is Bou's VIP of Keep Away, a deliciously double-bass infused number that is both funky and heavy, the ideal combination, and he's flipped up the arrangement here with some precisely placed note changes. There are also features from Vital, Euphonique, Dutta, Marcus Visionary and more, with the overall vibe being one of toughness and power. Top stuff.

Review: Liondub International's 10 year celebrations continue with a sense-shocking body slam into the future of the label and its ever-growing family of talented artists. Hitting hard like the label's ever-on-point Street Series, the rollcall reads like a who's who in gully talent: Dutta, Bou, Jayline, Vital, BlckHry and loads more. Whether you want to be completely twisted and spat back out by a brass section (Pharoah's "Fire In The Hole") you'd prefer to be hoovered by a jet engine then shot up into the stars (Jayline's "1408") or you're more into the idea of being rattled around in a big tin bassline can (Danny The WildChild's "Body Moves") this future shock has every physical experience contemporary (but heavily rooted) drum & bass can offer. And there's even more to come. Big up Liondub!

Highlights across this accomplished body of work include the big swing sizzles of 'War Time' the lavish skanks of 'Dem Bumbo' and a brand new twist on his tried and tested party tune 'Never Test VIP'. Review: Even just glancing at the amount of killer collaborators Saxxon's recruited for his odyssey you know this is a huge album: Navi, Coppa, T>I, DJ Limited, AK1200, Jaxx, Blackout JA and Liondub all play a role in this ambitious affair. And that's before we even address the music itself; rollers, slappers and vibers hanging from every corner like ill fitting suits, highlights include the heavily rotated bassline bust up "Rollcall", the trippy tripletty swing, strange buzzes and piano bliss of "Way Back", the woozy soul and fat wobbles of "The Night Before 420", the loose limbed jazz of "The Dopest" and pant swinging bassline slappery of "Wile E Coyote". And that's just the tip of the Odyssey iceberg. Huge respect to Saxxon, this isn't an album, it's a statement and way of life.

Roll Through (feat MC Coppa) - (5:55) 175 BPM
Review: Saxxon's "Jungle Odyssey" continues with four more firestarting burn ups. The EP kicks off in earnest with "Way Back". A hook up with DJ Limited, it's one of those holy grail tracks that's hard, soulful, funk and deep all at the same time thanks to a fine tuned bounce on the wobbles and those jazzy chords. Meanwhile "Yo Yo" brings even more wobble and jazz to the mix with a rampant sense of early 2000s funk and the final two tracks bring the MC to the fore; "Ignition" with Blackout JA is a forthright shredder with some incredible distortion and restraint on the bassline while "Roll Through" sees Coppa spitting over a rubber band bassline and subtle mid 90s Headz references. This album is going to be massive.

Review: Liondub have been on an absolute tear recently, with a slew of top-class dancefloor-orientated releases, all of which straddle that urban-edged divide between jungle, jump-up and beyond. Vital has been around for a while now and has more than proven his production ability, this single adds to that and it does so in style. 'Animals' is packed full of dirty stabs, it's bouncy and infectious and carries you with it the whole way through. 'Take Me Home' is similar but even naughtier, with a squelchy back end and a constant sense of penetration and force. Wicked.

BREAKDOWN - (5:07) 175 BPM Hot
Review: Last spotted on their Street Series a few years back Sub Killaz fly across to the east coast for another Liondub link-up. This time on the NYC's International imprint, the west coast duo tear things up with two heavy, direct damagers. "Anthrax" is a paranoid workout based around a wonked-out warped synth and heavily swung triplet beat while "Breakdown" is much more of a rolling punch-up with fat snares, groaning one-note basslines and a whole array of trippy percussive elements on the fills. Break it down.

Released on Liondub International, it brings together everything he's hit us hard with over the years on labels such as Rebellion, Brawlin and Stickybass. Big dancefloor energy but with jump-up realness and the darkness of rollers, highlights include the drama and tension of 'The Shadow Man', the dancehall vocals and hip-wriggling bass licks of 'Pull Up' and the funky fluctuations of 'Sugar & Spice'.

'Voodoo' stirs up some serious black magic to set the scene. Tight drums, groaning basses and an ice cold sample, it leaves us under no illusion as to what's next... 'Artillery' is all about those buzzy high frequency licks, 'Displacement' is a wonky old affair that you could imagine someone like Tyke or Hazard dropping at 6am and twisting minds while 'Power Of Mind' closes on a dark, demonic tip. Expect a full range of flavours as the pair guide us through their influences and inspirations. "Bass Hater" is a Frankenstein's monster of classic drum & bass and hip hop with its fusion of half-tempo rhymes and up tempo drums, showing off ultramodern production built around tightly wound bass burbles, minimalist drums and fine musical details. The instrumental flipside "B.M.X" leads with plucked strings suddenly run into the digitizer once the beat drops, a tense track of modern beat science at its finest to show off the Crew's most experimental side. Get involved.

Review: No retreat no surrender! DJ Hybrid and Madrush MC link up on Liondub International for this dark lesson in tension. Stripped back, menacing but never erupting over the top, this is the epitome of a dancefloor creeper. It's backed with an instrumental and a fresh Hardcore Junglism take on DJ Hybrid and Liondub's 2015 slap-about 'Boom In 93'. Booming back at ya!

Review: Toby Ross is unleashing an onslaught over on Liondub with a tight sounding EP. 'Jah' is a dark, moody stepper that doesn't care about rules and certainly doesn't care about feelings. The main bass on this tune oozes quality and packs some serious weight, reminiscent of the Souped Up crew. 'Beyond' is slightly less crazy but it definitely is still on the crazy end, as gargled bass notes inject a whole load of force into the arrangement, whilst a chopped up vocal adds that little extra. Tasty bits here.

Review: Woi and indeed oi, Veak continues his blazing run of form with another swag bag of badness on Liondub International. So heavy we get the VIP before the original, 'Black Bombay' ignites the fire in ruffage jungle spirit before he treats us to a whole smorgasbord of sickness; the 'Basement Track' style garage vibes of 'Echo', the stinking early 2000s Ram flavours of 'Put Up Your Lighta', the deeper, introspective steps of 'Under The Influence' and the ridiculously tense deal sealer 'Feel The Rush'. Each cut primed for those moments when we're finally able to let loose again, Veak is killing it right now.

Review: Mysterious transatlantic duo SHDWS make their debut on Liondub with a caustic, spooked-out shredder that lives up to its spellbinding title. Heavily MC-led, and loaded with metal-like aggression, there's a sharpness and sense of momentum to the track ensuring you won't forget it in a hurry. And for those who can't handle the mic-snapping frontman energy there's also an instrumental. Don't have nightmares.

Review: Have US jump-up duo Sub Killaz just dropped an album in disguise? Last week they gave us the feisty six-track "Ghetto Blaster" EP, now they're dropped another seismic sixer in the form of "Block Party". Just as forthright and banger-laden as the previous, highlights include the grizzly high end frequencies of "Pussycat", the much deeper steppy clangs and bangs of "Dis" and those sleazy west coast style synth leads on "Culture". Closing with the pure grit and savagery of "Rewind Mi Selecta", whether this is an album or just a massive bundle of tracks dropped on us over the space of a week we're not sure but we've loved this experience. Killaz by name...

Review: The Liondub crew have always been excellent at unleashing fresh dancehall fire. This latest drop from Capital D is an excellent example of that in action as the devilish vocal tones and grizzly 808 pulses of 'No Time' kick us off with a bang', followed by the rolling trap-style drums and typically bashment-influenced chord stabs of the title track 'Boiling Hot', topped off again by Capital D's instantly recognizable vocal tones. From here, 'Danger Business' utilizes a steel-drum driven instrumental construct, giving us some sunshine singalong flavour, before 'Have Some Fun' gives us the most uplifting creation of them all for the perfect closer. Excellent work!

Five tracks in total, all powered by his usual bulldozer charm and funk, this is one of this broadest EPs as we cross the gully board. From the sweet sultry vocals and soul of 'Holding Back' to the late 90s tear-up sound of 'Sound Business', Nick runs us through his highest and lowest emotions across the EP. Other highlights include the oddball off-beat growls and groans of 'Freak Show' and the warm as toast title track 'Bullet'. You're nicked son.

'Call It Love' breaks the seal with its busy flips between soulful depths and junglised bubblesome bass licks. It's backed by plenty more heat: 'Bad Behaviour' whips out a gnarly reese that slugs everything in sight, 'Problematic' is all about the high energy cuts and slaps, 'Spoilt Rotten' takes us to the furthest point of the solar system while 'Love Is Passion' brings us back home again with pure gulliness. Call it sick.

Review: The dust has barely settled from their destructive Riko Dan collaboration, but Lost City maintain the fire with this incredible link-up with another iconic MC. This time is Spyda taking the mic reigns as he calls for jungle unity over a premium bounce beat. Bashy, fat and stamping, it's got more than enough space for Spyda's sermons and -like all essential soundsystem shakers - it comes with a collection of equally crucial versions. We can't get enough of this one!

Badness business as usual: each cut packs a twisted punch with a prowling sense of darkness and tension and features a range of high level collabos. 'Badman Style' (with DJ Gaw) slaps with voodoo bass harmonics, 'Shifted' is a serious bassline tear-up while the title track is pure fighting talk with trilling high frequency bassline and its crisp hench drums. High grade.

Review: Featuring album lead-off track "Impossible" and the dark hip-hop & dancehall hybrid "Control" with Robert Dallas on the mic, "Impossible" starts off with sweet vocals and skanking keyboards. "Control" features Kwality on the microphone in a half-time hip hop style, laden with dub effects and circling synthesizers. Contrast comes from Kwality's dancehall-style vocals flowing around the sparse drums while getting wrapped into the delay effects that run through the center of the production. Showcasing two contrasting sides of the Numa Crew on this deadly drop, Liondub is bringing International pressure on the bass scene for 2014.

Think dancehall, but electronic, and you are a third of the way there with this one as we are greeted by dizzying snare slaps, grizzly bass energy and a rave-ready toasted vocal line from Capital D. With beats as brazen as these, he's got more diplomatic immunity than everyone ever involved in the Lethal Weapon franchise put together, and still he continues; the ringtone neck-wringing of 'Compulsion To Kill', the swaggering grunts and classic sample of 'Positive Vibes', the tension and paranoia of 'Good To Me' and ruffneck drama of 'Unorthadox' are all so badass they instantly come with a get out of jail free card. We got great news for all you crews (especially those who put their hands up for all three categories)... Vital is back with this ridiculous four-piece on Liondub International and it's intoxicating business from the off. 'Rage'N' hits with an addictive Q&A bassline riff that's so much fun to mix, 'Shaolin' cuts through the mix with real menace and string plucking tension before breaking into a vibrant bassline/synth groove while 'Raw Grooves' gets out the chainsaw and chops down a whole forest with its bassline just for the hell of it. 'Take Me Home', meanwhile, finishes the EP with a classic switcheroo. Hands up who likes good-times, early 2010s jump-up!

Delving deep into a fat sack of gully, each of these cuts rep Vital at his darkest and most uncompromising. "Criminal Minds" takes the lead with a classic vocal sample and a Serum-style naggy bass riff, "Acid Rocker" goes full-on foghorn fire with its big farty turbine bass roars, "Patterns" adds a little late 90s tech danger in the synths before dropping into an absolute sewer bassline while "Recognise" closes the EP with a little trad jump-up craftmanship. Riffy, addictive and laced with just a touch of soul on the vocal. Killer material; being a criminal has never been so much fun.

Review: Dear Diary, today we received a copy of DJ Hybrid's long-awaited debut album Diary Of An International Junglist on Liondub International. It's 20 tracks fat and, as you'd expect from such a prolific and hard working artist, it's well worth the wait. Featuring collabs with the likes of Rider Shafique, Diligent Fingers, Madrush MC, Redders and MC Foxy, there's a lot of next level action to unpack but instant head-slicers include the space age purrs and twists of 'Find Your Way', the menacing darkness and sparse funk of 'Pull Out Ya Piece' and the bouncing and swagger of 'Live For Yourself.' These are just some the many stand-out bangers from an album by one of the scene's most consistent leading lights in the last 10 years. Made for junglists, by a junglist. It doesn't get better than this.

Review: International bass music label Liondub presents the second single taken from DJ Hybrid's forthcoming full length LP titled Diary Of An Everyday Junglist. The full LP has been lovingly crafted by him over the last two years, and features a stunning array of collaborators. The single in question is titled "Diggin Through The Archives" where the Coventry-based producer serves up the main mix, which is an old school flavoured junglist roller featuring the talented Taja on the mic, followed by a handy instrumental version. As a bonus, you are also treated to the emotive darkside stepper "No Way" (2021 remix) calling to mind classic Marcus Intalex.

Review: Talent-packed Liondub collective Dungeon Kru get busy once again with 'Drop The Riddim'. As is always the case with the crew the flavour is deep, dark and the vibe is rolling as they guide us through our paces. Highlights include the timeless bassline funk of 'Sound Boy', the progressive creeps and twists o the E.R.F collaboration 'Drop The Riddim', the eerie tension and percussive funk of 'Rumble Inna Jungle' and the vibrant finale with Bandit Emcee 'Level Up'.

Review: Let's talk about dub organisation. Essentially if your dubs are a mess, then your life is a mess. You need to keep things in order and have your weapons ready to pull out and chop off a soundboy's head at any minute and you can't do that if your dubs aren't organised. Good job Liondub and Faysha and Red Fox are on hand to help you get things in order. Just drop this and the lyrical energy and euphoric feels will give you the clarity and motivation you need to sort your dubs out. Nick The Lot's warm and bubbly remix will give you the buzz to make a whole bunch more dubs, too. Stay organised!

Review: RISE is on Liondub International and is giving all of us a lesson in how to produce tough, stripped back sonics which carry more attitude than a charging bull. 'Crossbow' is the best example of this, as a no-nonsense drum line penetrates a precisely placed array of gully bass pulls and hair-rising low-frequency pushes. 'Feline' is more classic jump-up, as a potent blast of stabs combine into the type of hands-in-the-air dancefloor action we've come to expect from the genre. Proper stuff.
