Review: Pilot is one of the many labels in the orbit of the unstoppable production force that is Burnski aka garage innovator Instinct. It deals in proper club tackle from a wide range of artists and here it is Hatori Hanso that offers up the brilliance. 'Low Rider' opens with a very familiar hook and some deep, deep half sung, half spoken vocal, before nimble live bass, brass and crispy breakbeats bring the party. 'Cherry On The Cake' is a lively house cut littered with James Brown samples and screwy synths that keep the pressure on. 'Don't Know Why?' closes proceedings in a more cool and breezy tech house mood with sci-fi designs, to complete a set of varied but reliable frug-starters.

Review: Opolopo and Alafia join forces on "Axxanxxan/Axxiove," a two-track EP bursting with infectious energy on Canopy Records. This release isn't your average house offering. It's a full-fledged adventure that blends captivating percussion with vibrant disco and Afro influences. Both tracks, "Axxanxxan" and "Axxiove," weave intricate layers of percussion that lock listeners in with a tribal feel. But this EP goes beyond just rhythm. "Axxanxxan," takes the tropical route. Think metallic basslines swirling alongside chopped guitar riffs and washes of synths. It's a heady concoction that evokes a vibrant, sun-drenched dance floor. "Axxiove" prioritizes driving drums, creating a hypnotic pulse that's nothing short of scorching. Subtle cosmic elements weave through the track, adding a touch of otherworldly intrigue. A must-have for disco devotees alike, offering two distinct gems that will keep any party moving.

Review: There've been some fine sounds emerging from Scruniversal's sonic laboratories of late and this latest six-track missive from La Riff is a case in point. The EP opens with the atmospheric 'Jazz Reflections' - just imagine you're putting away bourbon on the rocks with John Shaft in a 124th Street dive bar - then moves on through the dense, aquatic and soundscape-y 'L'Amour', the moody, hypnotic groove of the sleaze-tastic 'Flash Funk', the avant-garde soul-jazz of the title track, the absolute stone-cold be303bop killer that is 'Acid At The Piano Bar' and then, finally, the blissed-out, post-excess anthem-in-waiting 'Dark Matter'. Varied, rewarding and supremely checkable.

Review: Alemao, who describes his sound as "deep disco, indie dance, percussion", delivers an EP that packs three cuts all coming from that place where disco, progressive house and techno collide. 'Akyre' sets the ball rolling in suitably BIG, peaktime-friendly style with its dramatic synths and surging prog bassline. 'Spatzi' is more straight-up Italo in style and features some cool synth sweeps straight out of a sci-fi allegory about the Cold War, while the title track takes us on a moody, slow-building excursion to the heart of a cavernous warehouse dancefloor, with Rigopalar's deeper remix of 'Akyre' completing the set.

Basic Rhythm - "Woozy" (Sully remix) - (3:15) 168 BPM
Review: A cheeky game of swapsie: earlier this year Basic Rhythm and Sully went side-for-side on this lovely Full Cycle-flavoured double A from Basic Rhythm's label Musique Nocturne. Now time for the second half as the guys pass parts rebuild each other's monsters. Both succeed in a beautiful ways; BR adds Krust Warhead style push and development of Sully's swinging 'XT' while Basic Rhythm's 'Woozy' is chiselled into a menacing stepper by Sully. Two absolutely exceptional remixes of two already stonking originals. Essential.

Review: South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was, from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

Review: Teezy slaps us hard with this bouncy four pack on Boujee B. Always revealing different shades to his style, 'Click Clack' sees him double down on the classic bassline dancefloor vibe where the focus is on the lower end of the riffs. Highlights galore on here but the big winner is 'Forfeit' with its retro 8-bit spiralling vibe. Game over. Elsewhere 'Rave Request' is giving us the 1UP of our lives and 'Bread Rack' is a bonus secret level thanks to its surreal sample sense of mischief. Teezy's flexing right here.

Review: Slump Recordings launches into 2024 with Baby Rollén's potent 4-track EP, delivering a punch of tech-driven rollers infused with an unmistakable 90s authenticity. Brothers Will and Max, known as Duowe, maintain their stronghold on the club scene, going OG house soundscapes, take the funk-driven deepness of "Monster Island" for example. "Bits N Bobs" keeps a subtle hint of disco by drives it deeper into the techier realm, with some straight up vibraphone vibes in "Xyloroll". And of course, the B2 (if we were talking vinyl) is this EP's deepest cut and most explicitly house. Deep.

Review: Twisted Individual's Grid collective collide for another adventure in neck support as the label's flagship Head Nodders series hits its 15th volume. The results always speak for themselves as dons young and old congregate with some fantastic fodder. Juiceman's 'Brutal Nature' sets the levels before Hexa proceeds to bite our heads off with the savage 'Rezura' remix. Elsewhere Milo goes super aggy and cosmic on 'Go Back', Module goes pure sci-fi on 'Weightless' and C-Du brings the EP to a mystical dreamy close with the trippy 'Planck Energy'. This gets the nod from us!

Review: If you're reading this then you will know that Instinct is one of the UK's powerhouse garage labels. Run by Burnski aka James Burnham it deals in serious tackle for rude boys and nasty girls. The drums hit hard, the reversed bassline burn goose old school cool and there gun finger salutes come thick and fast throughout this EP from Mance. 'Checkpoint' opens with the dusty drum shuffles and bulbous bass, then 'The Going Is Rough' is a little more soulful and sweet with its rolling basslines and silky pads. 'Beat 93' closes down with a seriously OG garage sound that takes you back to the mid-90s.

Review: Nude Disco's previous collaboration with Curtis Chip, 2023's 'High Rollers', was a bona fide club hit, so it's no surprise to find the cut - a sweet and sunny slab of nu-disco/boogie house fusion - kicking off the pair's new mini-album. It is followed by title track 'Never Be Lonely', a synthesiser-powered slab of peak-time instrumental nu-disco rich in glassy-eyed vocal samples and squelchy bass, and a trio of rather good bonus cuts. Check first the slo-mo disco sweetness of 'Diana's House', a groove-focused riff on Diana Ross classic 'It's My House', before admiring the tooled-up '80s soul bounce of 'Hey Scotty' and the deliciously deep, funky and dreamy 'Lumineaux'.

Review: Belarusian producer Four Walls is back - this time around he finds himself on the new Ultraworld Records imprint from DJ Craft. This one kicks off with the lush prog house and silky synth arps of 'Mind Charger' which soon takes you to the stars. 'Metamorphosis' is a more raw-edged and acid-laced techno stomper for peak time action and 'Summer Nights' is a bubbling, elastic tapestry of new age overtones, thudding kicks and trance-tinged pads. A remix by Toronto-based Pletnev adds another dimension to this club-ready EP.

Review: Next up on Perfect NL, an absolute stonker of a drop from the one and only Arkham Sound, joining forces with TMSV to deliver a mind-numbing dip into the subby pool. We open up with TMSV's remix of 'Heat Mandatory', a digital masterpiece in gritty synth lines and warbling LFO design, followed by the faster paced, jungle-influenced pad textures and eski licks of 'Elseworlds' alongside 'Hostile Universe', which again slams together heavily reese-driven arrangement for maximum impact. From here, more synthetic wizardry as the electrifying drives and metallic percussive slaps of 'Codec' turn the pressure towards a more dubstep-inspired field, followed by square-wave driven depths of the original 'Heat's Mandatory'. Top work!

Review: The Deepshakerz and Turntables Night Fever join forces on "Oh Phunk!," a potent injection of funk-fueled house music courtesy of Fool's Paradise. The track wastes no time establishing its groove. A powerful, pulsating bassline takes center stage, laying the foundation for the funky mayhem to unfold. Disco influences are sprinkled throughout "Oh Phunk!," with filtered disco strings adding a touch of nostalgic flair. However, the production feels fresh and modern, avoiding a cheesy throwback vibe. A classic house with a modern edge!

Review: Heavyweight sounds from Jinx! He's back at the Straight Up controls with four late night bangers to keep you sweating. Each one hitting with that loose, raw sense of bassline funk, 'Can't Breathe' sets the pace with a big hooky old school Serum style riff while 'Dance All Night' hits with more of a futuristic funk. Elsewhere 'In The Streets' goes heavy on the drums while 'Mash Up The Dance' closes the EP on a dubby introspective heads-down groove. Keep on dancing.

Review: Hey Cabrera! heats things up with "Italo Void," a scorching EP that blends electro disco, Italo disco, and house music into a perfect summer cocktail. Crisp drums and rhythmic handclaps form the base for infectious melodies that shimmer and pulsate throughout the title track. A remix by Lauer adds a touch of analog warmth with piano flourishes, infusing the song with a late-night, romantic atmosphere. Then "Forelskelse" takes us on a journey to Scandinavia. Here, disco and house influences collide to form an uplifting anthem brimming with emotional energy. David Bay's remix of "Forelskelse" is a masterclass in restraint. He strips back the original, letting the core melody and instrumentation shine through, resulting in a captivating and nuanced take. "Italo Void" is a superbly crafted EP that captures the essence of summer.

Review: 18 months on from his last outing on Exploited, 'Take Me Back', long-serving Mancunian drummer, DJ and producer Danny Ward returns to the popular German imprint with a double dose of dancefloor dubs. Opener 'Joy (Piano Dub)' more than lives up to the promise of its title, with Ward wrapping arms-aloft piano stabs and high-end electronic melodies around a chunky, mid-90s US house bassline and pleasingly weighty drums. He dons the alternative Dubble D alias on the accompanying 'Nostalgia Piano Dub', a hip-house breakbeat-driven re-interpretation that's every bit as rushing and excitable as the regular 'Piano Dub'.

Review: Groef debuts on Bipolar Disorder with a slamming techno release. "Smelly Driver" is a peak-time track, led by insistent percussion and pounding kicks, while on "Lazum" Groef maintains the pace to deliver a relentless, looped banger. There's a different approach on the title track. With a focus on visceral riffs and a repetitive vocal sample, its galloping groove is peppered with dramatic filters.
"Brazen" sees Groef focus on a house-based sound, and he fuses tribal drums with looped vocals and razor-sharp percussion. The label has also tapped remixers to reshape Groef's work. In addition to killer versions from Bailey Ibbs, Introversion and The Chronics, D.A.V.E the Drummer's piledriving take of "Lazum" that really stands out.

Review: Anastasia Kristensen debuts on Turbo with an unusual take on techno. "I'd Love To Do It" revolves around a grinding, ebm rhythm and features breathy vocals. It represents a new direction for Kristensen and is unlike most contemporary club tracks. She gets back to what she is best known for with the title track, where a sheet metal rhythm, pounding kicks and a gut-busting bass are to the fore. Meanwhile, "Paradox & Puzzle" is a more stripped back affair. Populated by bleeps and raw analogue riffs, it may be a million miles away from "I'd Love To..." but it still has the desired effect.

Review: After a lengthy hiatus, Sunka returns to All We Need. "Revolution" is led by a snaking bass and the interplay between two vocal samples - one intoning the track name, the other an understated soulful tone. The combination makes for a soulful, uplifting track. "Self-Hypnotic Tape" is moodier, with Sunka dropping a growling bass and incessant acid tweaks. "OSSS" sees him change direction; based on a swinging groove, it features celebratory ragga vocals and an uplifting melodic hook. Last but certainly not least is "Longin 2 Linga", where Sunka drops a squelchy bass and breathless vocal samples. It makes for a rousing finale to this feel-good release.

Up first is 'Brain Dead', which ain't much more than a throbbing, pulsating groove underpinning some serious cut-off and resonance abuse. 'Whop' rocks slightly more straight-up, harder-driving 4/4s and gets bleepier and bleepier as it goes on, 'That Acid' brings the tripped-out, Adonis-like vibes and finally 'Fusion' merges acid with Larry Heard-style deepness to play us out.

Review: Some three-way collaborative action here, as sometime Simma Black contributor The Checkup joins forces with DJ Merci and Mona Lee for the very first time. All involved seem to have got the best out of each other, with 'You Make Me Stronger' sounding like a dustier, extra-percussive take on some of label boss Kerri Chandler's best works of the mid-to-late 90s - all sweat-soaked deep house beats, heady acid bass, twinkling piano motifs and improvised female vocals. Simon Shaw remixes, turning it into a wobble bass-propelled slab of turn of the Millennium 4/4 UK garage revivalism with a 21st century twist.

Review: Short Attention, the home to stellar producers like Luke Hess and Santiago Salazar, have put together this split release of new talent. Mane's acid-fried, low-slung roller, "TPB" starts the EP in bugged out mode. The sound of the 303 is also prevalent on Pedro Salgado's "Step 1", but on this occasion, it weaves in and out of rolling electro drums and atmospheric synths. In contrast, Hector Ram's "Rolling 19" sees dubby beats combined with filtered chords, making for a killer deep house cut. Riki's "Narwhals" is of a similar persuasion, albeit with gentle keys bubbling through the arrangement. On "Floating Technique", Alpha also draws on the deeper-than-deep aesthetic, fusing it with a rolling Detroit techno groove.

Review: Gunnter made his debut on Rutilance Recordings, an imprint he co-founded with Dj Steaw back in 2016, though since then he's only appeared occasionally on the label. In fact, this EP is only his second full outing on the imprint, and his first was released five years ago. It's a genuinely fine EP all told, with Gunnter delivering a combination of fresh ideas and nostalgic, '90s deep house sounds. For proof, check the acid bass-propelled warmth of glassy-eyed opener 'Loose Leaves', the more low-slung and action-packed 'Get Closer', and the mid-90s Strictly Rhythm dubs flex of 'Base Camp'. Elsewhere, 'Smooth' lives up to its name via spacey pads and tactile grooves, while 'Jersey City' doffs a cap to what British DJs of the early 2000s would have called 'trad garage'.

Review: Leinad's "Electric City," originally released in 1997 and recently reissued on Kabinett 48 Recordings with bonus tracks, is a delightful journey through the heart of deep house. This remastered version offers a chance to experience, or revisit, the sound that captivated dancefloors in the late 90s. The album opens with "In Trouble," setting the mood with a laid-back groove and warm pads. Tracks like "Freak Tonight" and "Pretty Young Thing" showcase Leinad's talent for crafting infectious melodies that lodge themselves in your head. These tracks are perfect for dancefloors or simply cruising down the street with the windows down. While the album leans heavily on classic deep house elements, it throws in some surprises. "Back 2 The 80'S" is a synth-heavy homage to the previous decade, complete with playful video game-inspired melodies. "Let's Snip!" offers a brief intermission with a chopped-up vocal sample that adds a touch of playfulness to the mix. For those who remember the 90s house scene, "Electric City" is a delightful trip down memory lane.

Snipers Nightmare - (4:39) 140 BPM
Splash - (4:42) 140 BPM
Review: It's all getting pretty gritty over at Wheel & Deal HQ, with this thunderous arrival of Solidstates being the latest masterpiece from N-Type's stalwart stepper imprint. Firstly, 'Tank' arrives with about as much impact as it's physical embodiment as we are greeted by a system busting fusion of gnarly subs and eerie percussive patters, before sizzling, mind mushing LFO crunches are unleashed on the more slither-driven sounds of 'Snipers Nightmare'. Finally, 'Splash' arrives with another final splash of jittering rhythm and LFO-layered bass notation, closing off this collection with a really exciting approach.

Review: Almost two years on from the release of his fine - if arguably under-appreciated - debut album Waving, Athens veteran Lex returns to Leng Records with an EP that combines killer revisions of album tracks with two previously unreleased originals. The remixes are particularly impressive, with Faze Action's wonderfully colourful, pitched-down Balearic nu-disco revision of 'Punta Allen' - where the Lee brothers successfully add to the original version's cheery musicality - being followed by Ruf Dug's gloriously eccentric, acid-flecked house-not-house version of 'Prezend'. Elsewhere, 'Super Awake' is an immersive, TB-303-sporting chunk of sunrise dancefloor psychedelia, and Locke hook-up 'Libre D'Amor' is a glassy-eyed chunk of piano-powered '80s house nostalgia.

Review: "Let's Work" by Rulers Of The Deep, Ricky Inch, and Mr. V is a collaborative effort that brings together Estonian house veterans and an American vocal legend on the Soulfuric Deep label. The producer duo Rulers Of The Deep lay down a foundation of rich, soulful house music with hints of afro and tech influences. Ricky Inch, another Estonian house mainstay, adds a touch of local flavor to the international collaboration while legendary Mr. V brings his instantly recognizable vocals to the mix, perfectly complementing the groove with his signature house music flow.

Review: Fabric resident Bobby has scored a coup with the latest release on his Pleasure Club label. The work of AR:MG, the EP came about when the Mexican act contacted the imprint on spec via social media. It was a lucky break for both parties as "Cuerpo A Cuerpo" is an irresistible party electro track. Featuring 80s synths and stuttering call-and-response vocals, its old school energy is infectious. The release also features two superb remixes. Radioactive Man ups the funk quota with robust break beats and tripped out acid lines. In contrast, Sansibar's versions strips the arrangement back, putting the focus on rolling drums and melancholic synth lines.

Here he goes solo for the first time, popping up on Nocturne Music with the quietly impressive Mindways EP. The central focal point is 'Touch', a fusion of '80s electrofunk, proto-house and acid house sounds rich in echoing drum machine hits, restless Latin percussion, ghostly chords, raw acid bass and dewy-eyed vocal snippets. It comes backed with an instrumental take plus a trio of high-grade future dancefloor hits: EBM-goes-bleep workout 'Mindways', dub disco-powered slow house number 'A Little Love' and sparkling, mid-80s Italo-disco style workout 'Diska Tek!'.

Review: Three big, booming club tracks here courtesy of Xols, AKA Spanish producer Carla Aguilo. 'Wake Me Up' has nothing to do with the Avicii hit but instead starts out as a lively little house roller that's got energy to spare. Then in come some very Euro-sounding synths, and by the midpoint they've taken us all the way to the trance border, though you'll likely be too busy dancing to care. 'Syndicate Of Love' and 'La Gralla Catalana' similarly marry house beats to the big, analogue synth sounds of mainland Europe in the 1980s, but 'Wake Me Up' is the one.

Here the shadowy imprint turns to a familiar favourite, Eloi, who last appeared on the label two years ago. The vibe here is deep, sensual, warming and jazzy, with twinkling electric piano motifs, dusty samples and hissing cymbals riding tactile grooves. It's a formula that guarantees success every time - at least on this excellent release - with our picks including atmospheric opener 'The Great Delusion', the horn-spattered wonder of 'Foundation's End', and the Moodymann-esque excellence of 'It Gets Better'.

Here he makes his bow on X-Masters with a predictably solid four-tracker. Title track 'Time & Space' is particularly potent, with Hawkins layering hazy female vocal snippets and warming electric piano chords atop sweaty deep house drums and a genuinely superb bassline. This classic deep house vibe continues on the even deeper, dreamier and more alluring 'Together', before Hawkins opts for enveloping chords, fluctuating wobble bass and locked-in beats on 'Illusion'. Closer 'Lopez', meanwhile, is a fine fusion of deep house and cultured acid house sounds.

Review: Two very strong house cutz here from the French scene stalwart, coming on Lausanne, Switzerland-based label Black Pattern. 'High N Risin' loops up a diva vocal snip, crisp drums and Jersey-style organs in a style that recalls the excellent Serious Grooves imprint of the 90s, while the DJ Merci & The Checkup Heavy Bottom Remix takes things a notch deeper and adds live-sounding hand percussion. '2 The F', meanwhile, is dancefloor-driven deep house at its absolute funkin' best, while the Dexter Troy Remix gives it little extra disco shimmy. It's originals over remixes for yours truly this time out, but whichever rubs you opt for, this is a superb lil' package.

Soul Love (original mix) - (4:57) 126 BPM
Review: A meeting of musical minds here as French deep and soulful house veteran Fred Everything teams up with UK rap and trip-hop originators Stereo MCs. 'Soul Love', in its Original form, tops a slow, sparse and dubwise backbeat with Balearic-ish synth washes and a heavily treated, half-spoken/half-sung vocal from Stereos main man Rob Birch to create an instant weeded-out, sofa-surfin' delight. The accompanying Edit loses some of the more reggaefied elements in the trimming process, but sticking to the Original is strongly advised - if only because there's a bit more of it. A collaboration that turns out to be pleasingly more than the sum of its parts.

Review: IULY.B's debut album, Dimensions, on Switzerland's Adam's Bite label brings rise to the Romanian artist's evolution at large, allowing for IULY.B's knowledge and influences from a decade's time in the underground scene to spwan out of the rabbit hole. Across eleven tracks, IULY.B explores a spectrum of sounds, from the ethereal beachside ambiance of "Seagulls Passing By" to the gritty bass stabs and tripped-out vocals of "Bump". With a sequenced blend of raw dance floor energy and hypnotic subtlety, other numbers like "Aurora" and "Ronnie's Squat" blur the lines between house and techno, allowing a cut like "Variations" to delves into the roots of dub techno with swirling echoes and hypnotic chimes.

Review: Mr. Ho's "Freak Like U (Whip Mix)" - a remix that injects fresh energy into Masarima's already potent proto-house anthem "Freak Like U." This isn't your typical remix aiming for dancefloor dominance. The track retains the infectious energy of the original, but with a distinct acid house twist.

First up, the eerie reverberations and clustered drum stutters of 'Cantankerous' weave themselves into play, focussing heavily on skittish sub sweeps and delicate percussion to match. We open up with 'Up On The Hype', a steadily expanding crash through slightly off-kilter LFO's and crunching subs below, before the pressure ramps up extensively on 'What What' with a more twisted synthetic approach. Next up we have 'Propagation', a slightly slower slink through spacey soundscaping and more subtle sub arrangements, with RUFUS!'s heavily bitcrushed rethink of 'Up On The Hype' putting the cherry on the cake.

He sets his stall out on opener 'Inwards', joining the dots between classic deep house, melody-rich lusciousness and early 2000s micro-house, before opting for a deeper, warmer and more bumping vibe on 'Osez'. 'Suspended' is ultra-deep, dubbed-out and hypnotic in the best possible why, while 'Revelation' is a soundscape deep house treat and 'Ugotme' is an Andres-esque riff on Detroit deep house underpinned by deep sub-bass. In other words, it's a fine EP of well made, grown-up house treats.
